1 Então Josué convocou todo o povo de Israel para virem junto dele a Siquem, acompanhados dos seus anciães, magistrados e juízes. E assim vieram apresentar-se perante Deus.2 Josué dirigiu-se-lhes desta maneira: Diz o Senhor Deus de Israel - 'Os vossos antepassados, incluindo Tera, o pai de Abraão e de Nabor, viviam a oriente do rio Eufrates; eles adoravam outros deuses. Mas eu tirei o vosso pai Abraão daquela terra além do rio e trouxe-o para esta terra de Canaã, tendo-a dado aos seus descendentes através de Isaque, seu filho. Isaque foi pai de Jacob e de Esaú. A Esaú dei a região à volta do monte Seir, enquanto que Jacob e seus filhos foram para o Egipto.5 Depois mandei Moisés e Arão que trouxeram terríveis pragas sobre o Egipto, e posteriormente tirei de lá o meu povo, como gente livre. Mas quando chegaram ao Mar Vermelho, os egípcios perseguiram-nos com carros de combate e cavalaria. Mas Israel clamou a mim por auxílio e mandei uma escuridão entre eles e os egípcios; fiz com que o mar caisse sobre eles, submergindo-os. Vocês bem viram o que lhes fiz. A partir daí Israel passou a viver no deserto durante muitos anos.8 Finalmente trouxe-os para a terra dos amorreus, no outro lado do Jordão; eles combateram contra vocês, mas destrui-os e dei-vos a terra deles. Então o rei Balaque de Moabe começou uma guerra contra Israel; e pediu a Balaão filho de Peor para vos amaldiçoar. Mas não permiti que tal acontecesse; em vez disso fiz com que ele vos abençoasse. E foi assim que livrei Israel das suas mãos.11 Posteriormente atravessaram o rio Jordão e vieram até Jericó. A gente da cidade combateu-vos; o mesmo fizeram muitos outros - os perizeus, os cananeus, os heteus, os girgaseus, os heveus, os jebuseus. Mas eu destrui-os a todos. Enviei vespões à vossa frente que puseram em fuga os dois reis dos amorreus mais o seu povo. Não foram as vossas armas que vos trouxeram a vitória. Dei-vos terra que vocês não cultivaram, e cidades que não edificaram, que são essas onde vivem agora. Dei-vos igualmente vinhas e olivais para se alimentarem, mas que vocês não plantaram.'14 Por isso, reverenciem Jeová e sirvam-no com sinceridade e com zelo. Rejeitem para sempre os ídolos que os vossos antepassados adoravam, além do rio Eufrates e no Egipto. Adorem só o Senhor.15 Mas se não estiverem dispostos a obedecer ao Senhor, então decidam hoje a quem querem obedecer. Será aos deuses dos vossos antepasados, de além do Eufrates, ou aos deuses dos amorreus, aqui desta terra? Pois quanto a mim, eu e a minha casa serviremos o Senhor!16 E todo o povo respondeu: Que nunca nos aconteça deixarmos o Senhor e adorar outros deuses!17 O Senhor nosso Deus foi quem resgatou os nossos pais da escravidão da terra do Egipto. É o Deus que fez poderosos milagres à vista de Israel enquanto andávamos pelo deserto, e nos protegeu dos nossos inimigos quando atravessámos a terra deles. Foi o Senhor quem expulsou os amorreus e os outros povos que aqui viviam. Sim, nós escolhemos o Senhor; só ele é o nosso Deus.19 Mas Josué tornou a replicar ao povo: Vocês não têm naturalmente capacidades para servirem o Senhor Deus pois que ele é santo e cioso, não pode passar por cima da vossa rebelião e dos vossos pecados. Se o abandonarem e adorarem outros deuses voltar-se-á contra vocês e vos destruirá, ainda que tenha cuidado de vocês por este longo tempo.21 Contudo o povo voltou a retorquir: Nós escolhemos o Senhor!22 Vocês mesmos são testemunhas do que acabam de proferir, disse Josué, e de que escolheram obedecer ao Senhor.Sim, somos testemunhas.23 Pois bem, terão então que destruir todos os ídolos que há no vosso meio e que obedecer ao Senhor Deus de Israel.24 Com certeza adoraremos e serviremos só o Senhor, foi a resposta deles.25 Então Josué fez um acordo com eles nesse dia em Siquem, levando-os a um comprometimento permanente e irrevogável entre eles e Deus. Josué registou a resposta do povo no livro das leis de Deus, pegou num grande rochedo, e pô-lo sob o carvalho que estava junto ao tabernáculo, para que servisse de memorial daquele acto.27 Josué disse a todo o povo: Este rochedo ouviu tudo o que o Senhor disse, por isso servirá de testemunho contra vocês, para o caso de virem a não cumprir a vossa palavra.28 Por fim despediu o povo para que regressasse aos seus lares, nas suas terras.29 Pouco depois disto, Josué faleceu com a idade de 110 anos. Foi enterrado na sua própria terra, em Timnate-Sera, nas colinas de Efraim, a norte das montanhas de Gaás.31 Israel obedeceu ao Senhor durante todo o tempo da vida de Josué e dos outros anciãos, gente idosa que tinha testemunhado directamente as coisas maravilhosas que o Senhor fizera por Israel.32 Os restos mortais de José, que o povo de Israel trouxera consigo quando deixaram o Egipto, foram enterrados em Siquem, na parcela de terreno que Jacob comprara por cem peças de prata aos filhos de Hamor. Essa parcela de terra estava agora situada no território doado às tribos de José, precisamente.33 Eleazar, filho de Arão, também faleceu e foi sepultado nas colinas de Efraim em Gibeá, a cidade que fora dada a seu filho Finéias.

1 And Joshua convened all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.2 And Joshua said to all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.4 And I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.5 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red sea.7 And when they cried to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who dwelt on the other side of Jordan, and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:10 But I would not hearken to Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.11 And ye went over Jordan, and came to Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hand.12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labor, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and olive-yards which ye planted not do ye eat.14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.15 And if it seemeth evil to you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.16 And the people answered, and said, Be it far from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;17 For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us, and our fathers, out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:18 And the LORD drove out from before us all the people, even the Amorites who dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.19 And Joshua said to the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions, nor your sins.20 If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.21 And the people said to Joshua, No; but we will serve the LORD.22 And Joshua said to the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.23 Now therefore put away (said he) the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD God of Israel.24 And the people said to Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.27 And Joshua said to all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness to us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke to us, it shall be therefore a witness to you, lest ye deny your God.28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man to his inheritance.29 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun the servant of the LORD died, being a hundred and ten years old.30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and who had known all the works of the LORD that he had done for Israel.32 And the bones of Joseph which the children of Israel brought out of Egypt, they buried in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver; and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.
