1 Mas o certo é que houve quem pecasse entre os israelitas. A ordem de Deus de tudo destruir com excepção daquilo que tinha sido reservado para o tesouro do Senhor foi desobedecida. Com efeito Acã (filho de Carmi, neto de Zabdi e bisneto de Zera, da tribo de Judá) guardou algum do saque para si; o Senhor ficou extremamente irado com toda a nação de Israel por causa disso.2 Pouco depois da derrota sofrida por Jericó, Josué enviou alguns dos seus homens a espiarem a cidade de Ai, a oriente de Betel.3 Quando regressaram disseram-lhe assim: Trata-se duma pequena cidade e não serão precisos mais de dois ou três mil de nós para a destruir; não há necessidade nenhuma de lá irmos todos.4 E assim foram enviados para lá aproximadamente três mil soldados - e eles foram batidos completamente. Aproximadamente trinta e seis israelitas foram mortos durante o ataque e muitos outros foram atacados durante a perseguição que os homens de Ai lhes moveram até ao sítio das pedreiras. O exército israelita ficou desolado e sem ânimo algum perante o sucedido. Josué e os anciãos rasgaram a roupa que traziam e prostraram-se perante a arca do Senhor até à noite, pondo terra nas cabeças.7 Josué clamou ao Senhor: Ó Senhor, porque razão nos fizeste passar o Jordão se vais deixar os amorreus matar-nos? O melhor que devíamos ter feito era contentarmo-nos em ficar do outro lado de lá! Ó Senhor, que hei-de eu fazer agora que Israel fugiu dos seus inimigos? Porque quando os cananeus e os outros povos dos arredores ouvirem o que se passou, cercar-nos-ão e hão-de atacar-nos e expulsar-nos. Que vai acontecer à honra do teu grande nome?10 Mas o Senhor respondeu-lhe: Levanta-te! Não fiques assim prostrado com o rosto em terra. É que Israel pecou e desobedeceu às minhas ordens, tendo ficado com parte do saque quando eu lhes tinha dito expressamente que não ficassem com coisa nenhuma; não somente ficaram com isso mas mentiram e esconderam-no entre a sua bagagem. Foi essa a razão porque Israel foi batido. Foi por isso que os teus homens fugiram dos inimigos - é que estavam sob a maldição. Não estarei convosco enquanto esse pecado não for desarraigado completamente do vosso meio.13 Vamos, levanta-te! Diz ao povo assim: 'Que cada um se submeta aos ritos próprios da purificação, preparando-se para o dia de amanhã, porque o Senhor Deus de Israel diz que alguém pretendeu roubá-lo, e dessa maneira vocês não podem derrotar os vossos inimigos até que expulsem esse pecado. Logo de manhã deverão vir por tribos, e o Senhor indicará a tribo a quem pertence o culpado. Essa tribo apresentar-se-á por clãs, e o Senhor apontará a clã culpada; depois virão as famílias dessa clã uma a uma, e o Senhor mostrará qual a culpada. Aquele que subtraiu o que pertencia ao Senhor deverá ser queimado, acompanhado de tudo o que lhe pertence, pois que violou o acordo feito com o Senhor e trouxe a desgraça sobre Israel.'16 Assim de manhã cedo Josué trouxe as tribos de Israel perante o Senhor, e foi indicada a tribo de Judá. Depois apresentaram-se as clãs respectivas e foi assinalada a clã de Zera. Depois foram trazidas à presença do Senhor as famílias dessa clã e ficou isolada a de Zabdi. Por fim vieram os homens dessa família, um a um, e foi o neto de Zabdi, Acã, que se revelou culpado.19 Josué disse a Acã: Meu filho, dá glória ao Deus de Israel e confessa o teu pecado. Diz-me o que foi que fizeste.20 Acã respondeu: Pequei contra o Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Vi uma bela capa babilónica, e alguma prata pesando uns dois quilos, assim como uma barra de ouro de uns quinhentos gramas. Cobicei isso de tal maneira que fiquei com tudo para mim e está escondido debaixo do chão da minha tenda, com a prata enterrada por baixo de tudo.22 Josué mandou alguns homens procurarem essa parte do despojo. Foram a correr à tenda e lá encontraram as coisas escondidas segundo a indicação de Acã, e a prata por baixo do resto. Trouxeram tudo a Josué e colocaram no chão aos seus pés.24 Josué e todos os israelitas pegaram em Acã, na prata, na capa e na pequena barra de ouro, nos seus filhos e filhas, no seu gado, jumentos, cordeiros, na sua tenda, em tudo o que possuía e levaram todos e tudo para o vale de Acor. Então Josué disse a Acã: Porque foi que preferiste trazer sobre nós todos a desgraça? O Senhor agora te desgraça a ti. E os homens de Israel apedrejaram-nos até morrerem e queimaram os seus corpos. As pedras ainda lá estão, hoje em dia, e continua actualmente a ser chamado, aquele sítio, o vale da Desgraça. Foi assim que a ira tremenda do Senhor se apaziguou.

1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.3 And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labor thither; for they are but few.4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? O that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of Jordan.8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turn their backs before their enemies!9 For the Canaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will environ us, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do to thy great name?10 And the LORD said to Joshua, Arise; Why liest thou thus upon thy face?11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own goods.12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.13 Rise, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thy enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to their families: and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.16 So Joshua rose early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.19 And Joshua said to Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession to him; and tell me now what thou hast done, hide it not from me.20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them, and behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua, and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them to the valley of Achor.25 And Joshua said, why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones to this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger: wherefore the name of that place was called the valley of Achor to this day.
