1 Quando o povo passou em perfeita segurança, o Senhor disse a Josué:2 Diz aos doze homens escolhidos para executarem a tal tarefa especial, um de cada tribo, que peguem cada um deles numa pedra do sítio onde os sacerdotes permaneceram no meio do Jordão, e que as levem para construírem um monumento no lugar em que acamparem esta noite.4 Foi assim que Josué convocou os doze homens referidos e lhes disse: Vão até ao meio do Jordão onde a arca parou e que cada um traga sobre os ombros uma pedra - doze pedras ao todo, uma por cada uma das doze tribos. Servirão para levantarmos um monumento. Quando no futuro os vossos filhos perguntarem, 'Que monumento é este?8 Os homens fizeram como Josué lhes mandou. Pegaram em doze pedras do meio do rio - uma por cada tribo, segundo a ordem dada pelo Senhor a Josué. Levaram-nas até ao sítio em que acamparam naquela noite e ergueram ali mesmo o monumento em questão. Josué aliás construiu também um outro monumento no próprio lugar em que os sacerdotes tinham ficado de pé enquanto o povo passava; e ali está até ao dia de hoje.10 Portanto, os sacerdotes que transportavam a arca não saíram dali, do meio do rio, sem que todas estas instruções que o Senhor tinha dado a Josué, ainda por intermédio de Moisés, tivessem sido cumpridas. Entretanto o povo tinha-se apressado a passar para o outro lado do rio, e quando toda a gente passou, ficaram observando os sacerdotes levando a arca no meio do rio.12 As tropas de Rúben, de Gad e da meia-tribo de Manassés -com todo o seu armamento segundo as determinações dadas pomr Moisés, e formada por quarenta mil homens de guerra- tomaram a dianteira em relação às outras tribos que formavam o exército do Senhor, nas acções militares através das campinas do Jordão.14 Foi também um dia muito importante na vida de Josué. O Senhor deu-lhe um grande prestígio aos olhos de todo o povo de Israel, e respeitaram-no tanto como a Moisés, e não só naquela altura mas por toda a sua vida. Porque foi Josué quem, a mandado do Senhor, dava as instruções aos sacerdotes que transportavam a arca. Subam agora do rio, foi a ordem que o Senhor lhe deu para que a transmitisse.17 Josué disse-lhes isso, e logo que os sacerdotes sairam do leito do Jordão as águas começaram a correr como usualmente, transbordando acima das margens como antes.19 Este milagre deu-se no dia 25 de Março . Foi pois nesse dia que toda a nação passou o Jordão tendo acampado em Gilgal, a oriente da cidade de Jericó. E nesse sítio as doze pedras do Jordão foram erguidas como um monumento.21 Josué expos de novo o propósito daquele monumento de pedras: No futuro, quando os vossos filhos vos perguntarem porque é que estão aqui estas pedras assim, e que representam elas, hão-de dizer-lhes que são um memorial que recorda o maravilhoso acontecimento de toda a nação de Israel ter atravessado o Jordão por terra seca! Deverão dizer-lhes como o Senhor nosso Deus secou o rio, mesmo ali sob os nossos olhos, e o manteve seco enquanto passávamos todos! Foi aliás a mesma coisa que o Senhor fez quarenta anos atrás no Mar Vermelho! E fez isso para que todas as nações da Terra se dessem conta de que Jeová é o Deus poderoso, e para que vocês todos o adorem para sempre.

1 And it came to pass, when all the people had quite passed over Jordan, that the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,2 Take you twelve men from the people, from every tribe a man,3 And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge this night.4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, of every tribe a man:5 And Joshua said to them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:6 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?7 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel for ever.8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of Jordan, as the the LORD commanded Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there to this day.10 For the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.11 And it came to pass, when all the people had quite passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests in the presence of the people.12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses directed them:13 About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD to battle, to the plains of Jericho.14 On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.15 And the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.18 And it came to pass, when the priests that bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up upon the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned to their place, and flowed over all its banks, as they did before.19 And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.20 And those twelve stones which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal.21 And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?22 Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye had passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had gone over:24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
