1 Josias tinha apenas oito anos quando ocupou o trono. Reinou trinta e dois anos em Jerusalém.2 Foi um bom rei; seguiu cuidadosamente o bom exemplo deixado por David, seu antecessor.3 Quando tinha dezasseis anos -era o oitavo ano em que reinava- começou a buscar o Deus de David, seu antepassado, seguindo nos seus caminhos, sem se desviar deles nem para a direita nem para a esquerda. Quatro anos mais tarde iniciou o processo de limpeza de Judá e de Jerusalém, destruindo os altares dos ídolos, dos bosques e os altares dos altos. Deu-se ao cuidado de pessoalmente ir verificar nos próprios locais se tudo tinha sido bem destruído - os altares a Baal, os obeliscos, os altares dos bosques, as imagens, tudo teve a preocupação de reduzir a pó, e até de mandar lançar esse entulho sobre os túmulos mesmo daqueles que tinham praticado o culto da idolatria e que entretanto tinham morrido. Os ossos dos que tinham sido sacerdotes dos deuses, mandou queimar sobre os próprios altares dos ídolos, num acto público de reforma e de purificação do pecado da idolatria.6 Depois dirigiu-se às povoações de Manassés, de Efraim, de Simeão e até da distante Naftali, e fez o mesmo. Destruiu os altares pagãos de idolatria, fez em pó as imagens dos bosques, derrubou os obeliscos em honra dos deuses. Por toda a parte da terra de Israel fez o mesmo. Por fim regressou a Jerusalém.8 Durante o décimo oitavo ano do seu reinado, após ter purificado a terra, e o próprio templo, designou Safã (filho de Azalias) e Maaséias, governador de Jerusalém, assim como Joas (filho de Joacaz), secretário real, para que ficassem com o cargo de repararem o templo.9 Organizaram então um sistema de recolhas de donativos para a casa de Deus. O dinheiro recolhia-se às entradas do templo; eram recebedores os levitas em funções nessas portas. Os dons eram trazidos por povo que vinha mesmo de Manassés, de Efraim e de outras partes do resto de Israel, e também evidentemente, de Jerusalém.10 Todo o dinheiro se entregava ao sumo sacerdote Hilquias, que fazia a contabilidade respectiva, e que o distribuía aos superintendentes da casa do Senhor, para pagarem aos carpinteiros, aos pedreiros e para liquidarem as contas de aquisição de material - blocos de pedras lavradas para construção, madeira, em traves e em pranchas; reconstruiu assim o que outros reis antes dele tinham deixado degradar-se.12 Os operários trabalharam aplicadamente, sob as ordens de Jaate e de Obadias, levitas do sub-clã de Merari. Zacarias e Mesulão, do sub-clã de Coate, eram os superintendentes gerais de toda a obra. Acontecia até que os levitas que eram músicos hábeis tocavam música enquanto a obra se fazia. Outro grupo de levitas dirigia o trabalho dos operários não qualificados, que apenas transportavam material, por exemplo. Outros ainda eram contabilistas, contra-mestres e fiscais.14 Um dia quando Hilquias, o sacerdote supremo, andava pelo templo, aonde se dirigia regularmente para registar o dinheiro dos donativos recolhidos às entradas, achou um velho rolo escrito, e verificou serem precisamente as leis de Deus dadas a Moisés!15 Safã!, exclamou Hilquias dirigindo-se ao secretário do rei. Olha o que eu encontrei aqui no templo! As leis mesmo de Deus! E passou-lhe o rolo para as mãos. Safã pegou nele e levou-o ao rei, com quem aliás tinha audiência para dar conta dos avanços que a obra ia registando.17 Foram abertas as caixas dos donativos e o dinheiro; depois de contado e registado, foi entregue aos supervisores para pagarem aos operários, disse ao rei.18 Seguidamente referiu a questão do rolo da lei, contando como Hilquias o achara. E leu-o ao rei.19 Este, ouvindo as palavras da lei de Deus, rasgou a roupa que trazia, em sinal de desespero. Mandou convocar Hilquias, Aicão (o filho de Safã), Abdom (filho de Mica), Safã o secretário real e Asaías, conselheiro pessoal do rei.21 Vão ao templo e roguem ao Senhor por mim!, disse-lhes. Orem por todos estes que restam do povo de Israel e de Judá! Porque as palavras deste rolo são bem explícitas quanto às razões por que a grande ira do Senhor caiu sobre nós - é porque os nossos antepassados não obedeceram aos mandamentos escritos nestas palavras de Deus.22 Aqueles homens foram ter com Hulda, a profetisa, mulher de Salum (filho de Tocate e neto de Hasra). Salum era o responsável pelo guarda-roupa real e morava no segundo bairro de Jerusalém.23 Quando lhe disseram a causa da perturbação do rei, respondeu: Assim diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Digam ao homem que vos enviou:24 'Sim, o Senhor destruirá esta cidade e este povo. Todas as maldições escritas no rolo se concretizarão. Porque o meu povo me abandonou e se pôs a prestar culto a deuses pagãos. Estou extremamente indignado com os pecados deles. Por isso, o meu furor se derramará inevitavelmente sobre este lugar.'26 Mas o Senhor diz também o seguinte ao rei de Judá, que vos mandou consultar-me: Digam-lhe então o que lhe é transmitido pelo Senhor Deus de Israel: 'Visto que te entristeceste e te humilhaste diante de Deus quando ouviste as minhas palavras contra esta cidade e o seu povo, rasgando a tua túnica em desespero, e chorando perante mim - por isso te ouvi, diz o Senhor, e só mandarei o mal que prometi sobre esta cidade e o seu povo após a tua morte.' Foi então esta a mensagem do Senhor que eles trouxeram de volta ao rei. Este reuniu todos os anciãos de Judá e de Jerusalém, assim como os sacerdotes e levitas, juntamente com todo o povo, tanto grandes como pequenos, e fez-se acompanhar por todos eles até ao templo. Aí, o rei leu-lhes as palavras do rolo, as palavras da aliança que Deus estabelecera com o seu povo, e que fora achado no templo. Ali, de pé, na frente de toda a gente, o monarca prometeu ao Senhor seguir os seus mandamentos, com todo o coração e todas as suas capacidades, fazendo o que estava escrito naquele rolo. Fez também um veemente apelo a toda a população de Jerusalém e de Benjamim para que se comprometessem no mesmo propósito de obediência a Deus. E todos o fizeram.33 Josias retirou totalmente os ídolos das áreas habitadas por judeus, e requereu que todos adorassem Jeová, o seu Deus. Durante o resto da vida de Josias, o povo continuou servindo o Senhor, o Deus dos seus pais.

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.4 And they broke down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them and strewed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed to them.5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even to Naphtali, with their mattocks around.7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had collected from the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and mend the house:11 Even to the artificers and builders they gave it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to superintend it; and others of the Levites, all that had skill in instruments of music.13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they perform.17 And they have collected the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying,21 Go, inquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel, and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spoke to her to that effect.23 And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me.24 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, so shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;27 Because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou didst hear his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and didst humble thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thy eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.29 Then the king sent and convened all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.30 And the king went into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin, to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel, to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
