1 Salomão, filho do rei David, era agora o incontestado governante de Israel, porque o Senhor seu Deus tinha feito dele um poderoso monarca.2 Decidiu pois, o rei, convocar todos os oficiais do exército mais os juízes para Gibeão; também chamou todos os chefes políticos e religiosos de Israel. Levou-os ao cimo da colina até ao velho tabernáculo construído por Moisés, o homem ao serviço de Deus, no tempo em que tinham andado pelo deserto. (Foi só muito mais tarde que o rei David mandou construir outro tabernáculo em Jerusalém para a arca de Deus, quando a mandou vir de Quiriate-Jearim.) Também o altar de cobre, feito por Bezaleel (filho de Uri e neto de Hur), ainda ali se encontrava defronte do velho tabernáculo. Salomão, mais aqueles que ele convocara, reuniram-se todos diante dele, enquanto foram sacrificados mil holocaustos oferecidos ao Senhor.7 Nessa noite Deus apareceu a Salomão e disse-lhe: Pede-me o que quiseres e dar-to-ei!8 Salomão respondeu: Ó Deus, tu foste extremamente bondoso para com o meu pai David, e agora deste-me o reino. Só pretendo que as tuas promessas se confirmem! A tua palavra, dirigida a David meu pai, concretizou-se, e fizeste-me rei sobre um povo tão numeroso como o pó da terra! Dá-me agora sabedoria e conhecimento para os governar com competência. Porque quem seria capaz de dirigir sozinho uma tão grande nação como esta?11 Deus retorqui-lhe: Sendo assim, que o teu maior desejo é seres capaz de servir este povo, e que não pretendeste nem riquezas nem honras pessoais, nem me pediste que amaldiçoasse os teus inimigos, nem tão pouco que te desse uma longa vida; antes pediste sabedoria e conhecimento para guiar competentemente o meu povo - por isso te concedo o que pediste, e ainda te darei tantas riquezas, prosperidade e honras como nenhum outro rei terá tido antes de ti! Não haverá também depois de ti outro semelhante em toda a terra!13 Salomão deixou o tabernáculo, desceu a colina e voltou para Jerusalém para iniciar o seu mandato real sobre Israel. Organizou então uma enorme força militar de 1.400 carros de combate e recrutou 12.000 cavaleiros, para formarem uma guarda de protecção às cidades onde ficaram depositados os carros, ainda que alguns deles tivessem ficado também em Jerusalém mesmo, sob o controlo directo do rei. Durante o reinado de Salomão, a prata e o ouro eram tão abundantes em Jerusalém como as pedras das ruas; madeiras caras eram usadas tão correntemente como madeira de figueiras bravas! Salomão mandou ao Egipto especialistas no comércio de cavalos para comprarem manadas inteiras a preços especiais. Por esse tempo os carros egípcios eram vendidos por sete quilos de prata cada um, e os cavalos por 1,7 quilos cada, entregues em Jerusalém. Muitos destes eram posteriormente vendidos de novo aos reis heteus e sírios.

1 And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.2 Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief of the fathers.3 So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon: for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.4 But the ark of God David had brought up from Kirjath-jearim to the place which David had prepared for it: for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.5 Moreover the brazen altar, that Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon and the congregation sought to it.6 And Solomon went up thither to the brazen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt-offerings upon it.7 In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, Ask what I shall give thee.8 And Solomon said to God, Thou hast shown great mercy to David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.9 Now, O LORD God, let thy promise to David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy great people?11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thy heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honor, nor the life of thy enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:12 Wisdom and knowledge are granted to thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honor, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.13 Then Solomon came from his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned over Israel.14 And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.15 And the king made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycamore trees that are in the vale for abundance.16 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.17 And they fetched up, and brought out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty: and so they brought out horses for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, by their means.
