1 Manassés tinha apenas doze anos quando começou a reinar. Vinte e cinto anos durou o seu reinado, com sede em Jerusalém.2 Mas foi um mau rei. Encorajou o povo a adorar os ídolos das nações pagãs que o Senhor destruíra quando o povo de Israel tomou posse da terra. Tornou a construir os altares pagãos que o seu pai, Ezequias, tinha abatido -os altares em honra de Baal, os nichos nos bosques, altares aos astros. Chegou mesmo a levantar altares nos próprios pátios do templo do Senhor para adorar os astros no lugar mesmo em que o Senhor dissera que deveria ser honrado para sempre. Foi ao ponto de sacrificar seus próprios filhos no fogo, em holocausto, no vale de Hinom. Praticou o espiritismo, fazendo consultas a médiuns, a bruxas e a feiticeiros, encorajando toda a espécie de maldades, atraindo assim a ira do Senhor.7 Foi a tal ponto da sua baixeza, que mandou colocar uma imagem esculpida de um ídolo no templo mesmo de Deus, no próprio local em que o Senhor tinha dito a David e a Salomão, seu filho: Serei honrado aqui neste templo em Jerusalém - a cidade que escolhi entre as outras todas de Israel, para que nela o meu nome seja respeitado para sempre. Se obedecerem aos meus mandamentos -a todas as leis e instruções que vos comuniquei através de Moisés- nunca mais deixarei partir Israel desta terra que dei aos seus antepassados. r9 Pois Manassés, muito pelo contrário, encorajou a população de Judá e de Jerusalém a praticar ainda mais maldades do que as nações que o Senhor tinha destruído quando Israel tomou a terra.10 Avisos repetidos foram desprezados, tanto pelo próprio Manassés como pelo povo.11 Por essa razão o Senhor enviou os exércitos da Assíria, que pegaram nele com ganchos, como para os animais selvagens, o amarraram com cadeias e o levaram para Babilónia.12 Aí, finalmente, a sua consciência despertou na angústia, humilhou-se sinceramente perante o Deus dos seus pais, orando e pedindo-lhe socorro. O Senhor respondeu à sua súplica! Tornou a trazê-lo a Jerusalém, ao seu reino. Manassés reconheceu enfim que o Senhor era realmente o Deus verdadeiro!14 Foi depois disto tudo que ele fez reconstruir o muro exterior da cidade de David, assim como a muralha desde o ocidente da fonte de Giom, no vale de Cedron, até à porta do Peixe, e rodeando a citadela da Colina, onde a muralha se elevava aliás a grande altura. Pôs guarnições militares comandadas por oficiais escolhidos em todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá. Também retirou os ídolos estrangeiros das colinas, e a imagem que fora colocada no templo; derrubou os altares que tinha levantado na própria elevação onde se erguia o templo de Deus, assim como os altares que havia por toda a parte em Jerusalém, fazendo disso tudo um montão de lixo fora da cidade. Depois, reconstruiu o altar do Senhor, ofereceu sacrifícios sobre ele - sacrifícios de paz e de louvor - e pediu que o povo de Judá adorasse o Senhor Deus de Israel.17 Contudo o povo continuou sacrificando sobre as colinas, embora os sacrifícios fossem oferecidos ao Senhor Deus.18 O resto dos actos de Manassés, a oração que fez a Deus, e a resposta que Deus lhe deu através dos profetas - tudo isto está escrito nos Anais dos Reis de Israel.19 A sua oração e a forma como o Senhor lhe respondeu, assim como um relato circunstanciado dos seus erros e dos seus pecados, incluindo a lista dos locais -as colinas e os bosques- onde colocou ídolos e imagens genravadas, tudo isto antes de se ter humilhado perante o Senhor, tudo está relatado nos Anais dos Profetas.20 Quando Manassés faleceu foi enterrado no terreno do seu próprio palácio.24 O seu filho Amom reinou em seu lugar; tinha a idade de vinte e dois anos. O trono manteve-se em Jerusalém. Mas apenas reinou dois anos, e fez o que era mal aos olhos do Senhor, à semelhança dos primeiros tempos do seu pai Manassés; porque fez sacrifícios aos ídolos todos, tal como o seu pai. Mas o pior é que não se arrependeu como ele, antes foi agravando multiplicadamente o seu pecado. Acabou assassinado pelos seus próprios colaboradores no seu palácio.25 Houve contudo uns quantos cidadãos que resolveram fazer justiça por suas mãos, matando os que o tinham assassinado e declarando Josias, seu filho, rei da nação.

1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem:2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down; and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them.4 Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.7 And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:8 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from the land which I have appointed for your fathers; provided they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.10 And the LORD spoke to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.11 Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.12 And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,13 And prayed to him: and he was entreated by him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he is God.14 Now after this, he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance at the fish-gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great highth, and put captains of war in all the fortified cities of Judah.15 And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.16 And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed on it peace-offerings and thank-offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.17 Nevertheless, the people sacrificed still in the high places, yet to the LORD their God only.18 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers that spoke to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.19 His prayer also, and how God was entreated by him, and all his sin, and his trespass, and the places in which he built high places, and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.20 So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.21 Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem.22 But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed to all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them;23 And humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more.24 And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house.25 But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.
