1 Seguidamente pus-me a observar todas as opressões que se praticam sobre a face da Terra - as lágrimas dos oprimidos, sem haver ninguém que intervenha a favor deles, ao mesmo tempo que o poder se concentra do lado dos opressores.2 Acho que os mortos são mais felizes do que os vivos.3 E mais felizes do que uns e outros são os que ainda não nasceram e não viram todas as maldades que se praticam na Terra.4 Então descobri que a força que leva basicamente os homens para o sucesso é a concorrência com o seu próximo! Mas também isto é futilidade, e uma corrida atrás do nada.5 O tolo cruza os braços, não quer trabalhar,6 preferindo quase morrer de fome, porque está convencido de que é melhor viver com uma côdea de pão e ter descanso, do que trabalhar no duro e encher-se de cuidados, o que não tem sentido.7 Observei também outra situação absurda que existe sobre a Terra.8 É o caso de um homem que vive absolutamente sozinho, sem filhos sem irmãos, e que mesmo assim trabalha sem descanso para enriquecer cada vez mais. A quem vai ele deixar o que tem, afinal? Por que se priva ele de tanto, agora? Esta é sem dúvida alguma uma forma errada e absurda de viver.9 O trabalho realizado por dois é sempre mais proveitoso.10 Se um cair, o outro levanta-o; se estiver sozinho ao cair, ver-se-á em grande dificuldade.11 E também, numa noite fria, se dois dormirem juntos, poderão aquecer-se um ao outro, mas como se aquecerá aquele que dorme só?12 Duas pessoas podem melhor resistir a um ataque do que uma só. Com quantos mais fios for entrançada uma corda, tanto mais sólida será.13 Vale muito mais um jovem pobre, mas sábio, do que um rei velho e insensato que recusa todo e qualquer conselho.14 E isso, ainda que tal jovem tenha saído da prisão para reinar ou que tenha nascido na pobreza. Toda a gente correria a ajudar um mancebo nessas condições, mesmo que fosse para usurpar o trono.16 Pois poder-se-á tornar o chefe de toda uma nação, e ser muito popular. No entanto as gerações seguintes não virão a ter por ele nenhum entusiasmo! Por isso, mais uma vez, tudo é superfluidade e fuga atrás do que é nada!

1 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.2 Wherefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive.3 Yes, better is he than both they, who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.4 Again, I considered all labor, and every right work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.6 Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with toil and vexation of spirit.7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yes, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labor, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yes, it is a grievous labor.9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor.10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him to rise.11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?12 And if one prevaileth against him, two shall withstand him; and a three-fold cord is not quickly broken.13 Better is a poor and a wise child, than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.14 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.15 I considered all the living who walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.17 \5:1\Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
