1 Ouve a palavra do Senhor, ó povo de Israel. O Senhor tem contra ti um processo de acusação, com as seguintes denúncias: Não há nem honestidade, nem bondade, nem conhecimento de Deus na tua terra.2 Juras, mentes, matas, roubas e cometes adultério. Vê-se violência por toda a parte; os homicídios sucedem-se uns após outros.3 É por isso que a tua terra não é produtiva; está cheia de tristeza, e tudo o que vive tem doença e acaba por morrer; quadrúpedes, aves e até os peixes começam a desaparecer.4 Não apontes para outros, tentando aliviar as culpas de cima de ti! Para ti, sacerdote, é que eu aponto o dedo.5 Em consequência dos vossos crimes, vocês, os sacerdotes, serão derrubados em pleno dia, tanto como durante a noite, conjuntamente com os teus falsos profetas; destruirei igualmente a vossa mãe, Israel.6 O meu povo é destruído porque não me conhece; e tudo por culpa vossa, sacerdotes, porque vocês mesmos não se interessam em me conhecer; por consequência recuso reconhecer-vos como meus sacerdotes. Visto que se esqueceram das minhas leis, também me esquecerei de abençoar os vossos filhos.7 Quanto mais o meu povo se multiplicou, tanto mais pecou contra mim. Trocou a glória de Deus pela vergonha dos ídolos.8 Os sacerdotes estão contentes com os pecados do povo; lambem-se de gozo e ainda lhes cresce a água na boca por mais!9 Por isso se pode dizer: Tal povo, tais sacerdotes - se o povo é mau, os sacerdotes não lhe ficam atrás. Por consequência, castigarei ambos, sacerdotes e povo, pelos seus actos perversos.10 Comerão, e nunca se sentirão satisfeitos. Farão um grande negócio com a prostituição e nunca terão filhos, porque me voltaram as costas e procuraram outros deuses.11 Vinho, mulheres e canções tiraram inteligência ao meu povo.12 Consultam um pedaço de madeira sobre o que devem fazer. A divina resposta é-lhes dada pela maneira especial como uma vara cai, quando atirada ao chão. O correr atrás de outros deuses corromperam-nos; o espírito de luxúria enganou-os e apartaram-se da sujeição ao seu Deus.13 Fazem sacrifícios no cimo das elevações; sobem aos montes para queimar incenso sob a sombra agradável dos carvalhos, dos álamos e dos olmeiros. E aí se prostituem as vossas filhas, e as vossas mulheres adulteram.14 Mas não serão estas que eu castigarei; são vocês, os homens responsáveis por isso mesmo, adulterando com meretrizes e com as prostitutas dos templos. Loucos! A vossa condenação está decretada, pois recusaram ter inteligência.15 Mas se tu, Israel, te queres corromper, que Judá, no entanto, se mantenha afastado de uma tal vida. Ó Judá, não te corrompas juntamente com esses que hipocritamente me vão adorar em Gilgal e em Betel. O culto que celebram é uma simples aparência.16 Não te faças semelhante a Israel, teimoso como um bezerro, resistindo ao Senhor que queria conduzi-los para verdes pastagens.17 A gente de Efraim está toda entregue aos ídolos. Deixem-na.18 Os homens de Israel acabaram as suas rodadas de vinho; depois vão para a rua à procura de meretrizes. A sua atracção pelo que é corrupto é muito maior do que o amor da honra.19 Por isso um vento ciclónico os varrerá com violência; morrerão no meio de vileza, por causa do culto de idolatria.

1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth in it shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yes, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.4 Yet let no man contend, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that contend with the priest.5 Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.10 For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall be guilty of lewdness, and shall not increase: because they have ceased to take heed to the LORD.11 Lewdness and wine and new wine take away the heart.12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth to them: for the spirit of lewdness hath caused them to err, and they have gone astray from under their God.13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shade of them is agreeable: therefore your daughters shall be guilty of lewdness, and your spouses shall commit adultery.14 I will not punish your daughters when they are guilty of lewdness, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for they themselves are separated with prostitutes, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.15 Though thou, Israel, playest the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye to Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.16 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.17 Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.18 Their drink is sour: they have been guilty of lewd deeds continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.19 The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
