1 Como Israel prosperou - é uma vinha luxuriante, cheia de frutos! Mas quanto mais vitalidade lhe dou, mais ela dá vida aos altares dos deuses pagãos; quanto mais ricas searas lhe dou, mais belas são as estátuas que ergue em honra dos ídolos.2 O coração do povo é falso para com Deus. São pecadores e devem ser castigados. Deus derrubará os seus altares profanos e esmigalhará as suas imagens.3 Então dirão: Abandonámos o Senhor e ele levou-nos o nosso rei. Mas, que diferença faz isso? Não precisamos de nenhum outro, de qualquer forma!4 Fazem promessas que não têm intenção nenhuma de vir a cumprir. Por isso o castigo aparecerá entre eles como ervas venenosas, nos regos dos campos.5 O povo de Samaria anda a tremer com medo que o seu deus-bezerro, de Bete-Aven, venha a ser ferido; os sacerdotes idólatras, juntamente com o povo, andam a lamentar-se por causa da glória que se apartou dali para o exílio.6 Esse tal ídolo - essa coisa que é um deus-bezerro - será levado com eles quando partirem como escravos para a Assíria, como presente para o rei assírio. Efraim será alvo de risotas, por ter confiado num tal ídolo; Israel será alvo de ignomínia.7 Tal como para Samaria, o seu rei desaparecerá, como um pedaço de espuma sobre as ondas do oceano.8 E os altares dos ídolos de Aven, em Betel, onde Israel pecou, serão feitos em estilhaços. Espinhos e ortigas crescerão por ali em volta. O povo clamará desesperado para que as montanhas e as colinas caiam sobre eles, que os esmaguem.9 Ó Israel, desde aquela tremenda noite em Gibeá apenas tem havido pecado, e mais pecado! Não fizeste progressos nenhuns. Não terá sido justo que os homens de Gibeá tenham sido castigados? Serei então contra ti, por causa da tua desobediência; juntarei os exércitos das nações contra ti, para te castigar por causa das tuas transgressões.11 Efraim é como uma bezerra domada que gosta de trilhar o trigo - é um trabalho fácil que gosta de fazer. Antes, nunca a tinha posto debaixo de um jugo - tinha poupado o seu tenro pescoço. Mas agora atrelá-la-ei ao arado. Os seus dias de liberdade terminaram.12 Plantem boas sementeiras de rectidão, e colherão searas do meu amor; lavrem o duro solo do vosso coração, porque chegou o tempo de buscar o Senhor, para que venha e derrame chuvas de salvação sobre vocês.13 Mas cultivaram antes a maldade e segaram abundância de pecado. Colheram a recompensa total de haverem confiado na mentira - julgaram que o poder militar e um grande exército poderia dar segurança a uma nação!14 Por consequência, terrores de guerra levantar-se-ão entre o teu povo, e todas as tuas fortificações cairão, tal como aconteceu em Bete-Arbel, que Salmã destruiu; até as mães com os seus filhinhos foram esmagadas ali. Esse será o vosso destino, igualmente, de vocês, o povo de Israel, por causa da vossa grande maldade. Numa só manhã o rei de Israel será destruído.

1 Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit to himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath multiplied the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.2 Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images.3 For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us?4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Beth-aven: for its people shall mourn over it, and its priests that rejoiced on it, for its glory, because it is departed from it.6 It shall also be carried to Assyria, for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.7 As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water.8 The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.9 O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.10 It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.11 And Ephraim is as a heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he shall come and reign righteousness upon you.13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou hast trusted in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be plundered, as Shalman plundered Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.15 So shall Beth-el do to you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel be utterly cut off.
