1 Então o Senhor falou novamente a Jonas:P2 Vai a essa grande cidade de Nínive, e avisa-os da sua condenação, tal como te mandei antes!3 Jonas obedeceu e foi a Nínive. Era na verdade uma grande cidade, com arredores muito vastos - tão extensa que se levavam três dias para a percorrer.4 Entrando na cidade, Jonas começou a pregar. Jonas clamava ao povo que se juntava ao seu redor: Mais quarenta dias, e Nínive será destruída!-5 A multidão acreditou nas suas palavras, e foi proclamado um jejum geral; todas as pessoas, inclusivé o rei, se vestiram de pano de saco, em sinal de contrição.6 O monarca da cidade, quando ouviu o que Jonas proclamava, desceu do seu trono, pôs de parte as roupagens reais, vestiu-se daquele pano grosseiro e sentou-se sobre cinza.7 Tanto ele como a sua corte mandaram por toda a cidade a seguinte mensagem: Que ninguém, nem mesmo os animais, coma seja o que for nem beba água alguma. Toda a gente deve vestir-se de pano de saco e clamar fervorosamente a Deus; que todos se arrependam das suas más acções, e das violências que têm praticado. Talvez Deus acabe por permitir que vivamos, e desista da sua tremenda ira.10 Quando Deus viu que eles estavam verdadeiramente decididos a pôr termo aos seus maus caminhos, desistiu da intenção de os destruir.

1 And the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that I bid thee.3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.6 For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: yes, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did it not.
