1 Mais tarde o Senhor apareceu-lhe outra vez enquanto continuava a viver nos carvalhais de Mamre. E foi desta maneira: Numa tarde quente, quando estava sentado à entrada da tenda, ao erguer os olhos viu três homens que vinham na sua direcção. Apressou-se a ir-lhes ao encontro, acolhendo-os com cordialidade:3 Peço-vos que não continuem o caminho sem descansarem aqui um pouco à sombra desta árvore. Vou trazer-vos água para refrescarem os pés, e alguma coisa que comam e vos ajude a refazer as forças. Depois poderão prosseguir viagem.Está bem. Faz assim como disseste, responderam-lhe.6 Abraão foi a correr à tenda, e disse a Sara: Depressa! Faz num instante uns bolos de farinha, o bastante para as três pessoas que vamos ter de visita. Depois deu um pulo à vacaria, escolheu a melhor vitela, mais tenrinha, e mandou o criado que a preparasse rapidamente. De seguida foi buscar manteiga, queijo e leite, e com a carne da vitela que tinha mandado preparar, trouxe tudo aos visitantes. Pôs-se então ali de pé, junto da árvore, a vê-los comer.9 Eles perguntaram-lhe: Onde é que está Sara, a tua mulher? Na tenda, respondeu. E o Senhor disse-lhe:10 Fica sabendo que para o ano que vem, dar-vos-ei, a ti e a Sara, um filho.Sara estava a ouvir à entrada da tenda, por detrás dele. Abraão e Sara eram ambos já bastante idosos. E Sara até havia já há muito tempo que tinha cessado o costume das mulheres, que tinha passado o tempo em que podia ter filhos. Por isso começou a rir-se para consigo e a pensar: O quê? Uma mulher da minha idade poder ainda ter a alegria de lhe nascer um menino? Tanto mais com um marido já tão velho como o meu!13 Mas o Senhor disse a Abraão: Porque é que Sara se riu? Porque é que ela está a pensar que uma mulher como ela já não pode ter filhos? Para Deus haverá alguma coisa que seja muito difícil de fazer? Não te esqueças portanto de que no próximo ano, tal como te disse, Sara há-de ter um filho.15 Mas Sara quis desculpar-se: Eu não me ri, porque estava com medo.16 Contudo eles insistiram e corrigiram-na: Sim, é claro que te riste. Depois levantaram-se e continuaram na direcção de Sodoma. E Abraão acompanhou-os uma parte do caminho.17 O Senhor perguntou: Deixarei que Abraão ignore aquilo que vou fazer? Porque a verdade é que ele se vai tornar numa poderosa nação, e virá a ser uma fonte de bênção para todas as nações da terra. Eu escolhi-o, por isso sei que há-de mandar os filhos e todos os da sua casa obedecerem ao Senhor de forma a serem pessoas que pratiquem o que é justo e recto, e a fim de que eu possa realizar tudo o que lhe prometi.20 Então disse a Abraão: Dou-me conta de que o povo de Sodoma e de Gomorra é extremamente mau, e que tudo o que fazem é perverso. Vou descer lá agora para confirmar isso. Depois vou agir.22 Os homens dirigiram-se então em direcção a Sodoma, mas Abraão continuou ainda na presença do Senhor. E aproximou-se para perguntar: Vais destruir bons e maus, juntamente? Supondo que encontras na cidade cinquenta pessoas que andam no caminho de Deus, irás destruí-la? Não a pouparás, atendendo a que há lá esse punhado de gente que segue a justiça? Não seria justo que fizesses morrer os rectos junto com os pecadores. Tu nunca tratas da mesma maneira uns e outros. O Juiz de toda a Terra não haveria de agir com toda a justiça?26 E Deus respondeu-lhe: Se eu encontrar em Sodoma cinquenta pessoas rectas, pouparei a cidade inteira, por causa delas.27 Mas Abraão insistiu: Já que comecei a falar-te neste assunto, permite-me que vá mais longe, ainda que eu não valha mais do que cinza ou pó da terra. Então se houver lá apenas quarenta e cinco desses que seguem a justiça? Destruirás mesmo assim a cidade só por faltarem cinco ao número que te apresentei primeiro? Deus tornou a responder-lhe: Se houver lá quarenta e cinco desses, não destruirei a cidade.29 Mas Abraão quis ir mais longe ainda no seu pedido: E se forem só quarenta? Deus disse-lhe de novo: Também não destruirei a cidade se forem só quarenta.30 Não te impacientes, Senhor, se eu continuar a insistir! Supondo então que são apenas trinta? Não a destruirei ainda que sejam só trinta.31 Abraão não desistiu ainda de orar a favor dos rectos: Já que tenho ido tão longe na minha ousadia, vou continuar: Se lá estiverem só vinte deles.Mesmo que sejam vinte, disse Deus, não destruirei a cidade por causa desses vinte.32 Senhor, se não te importas, deixa-me falar só uma última vez mais. E se não forem mais de dez? Deus respondeu-lhe novamente: Mesmo só com dez, não a destruirei, se eles lá estiverem.33 E sendo que Abraão acabou de conversar com o Senhor, este foi-se embora. Abraão regressou a casa.

1 And the LORD appeared to him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:4 Let a little water, I pray you, be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:5 And I will bring a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that you shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and brought a calf tender and good, and gave it to a young man; and he hasted to dress it.8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.10 And he said, I will certainly return to thee according to the time of life; and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and far advanced in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am become old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?13 And the LORD said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I certainly bear a child, who am old?14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return to thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they will keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come to me; and if not, I will know.22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went towards Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?24 Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are in it?25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I, who am dust and ashes, have taken upon me to speak to the Lord.28 Peradventure there will lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.29 And he spoke to him yet again, and said, Peradventure there will be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.30 And he said, Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there will thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord: Peradventure there will be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten will be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned to his place.
