1 Jacob continuou a viagem e chegou finalmente ao seu destino, na terra oriental. Ainda longe viu três rebanhos descançando junto dum poço no meio do campo, esperando a altura de irem beber. E uma pesada pedra cobria a boca do poço.3 (O hábito era que a pedra só fosse removida quando os rebanhos todos estivessem ali. Depois de se tirar água para todos os animais, então tornava-se a pôr a pedra no seu lugar.)4 Jacob foi ter com os pastores e perguntou-lhes onde viviam: Em Harã, disseram.5 Portanto conhecem um homem chamado Labão, filho de Naor? Com certeza!6 Quem é ele? É uma pessoa que vive bem? Sim, é um homem rico. Olha, vem ali a filha Raquel com um rebanho.7 Mas porque é que não tiram água para os animais, para que possam voltar às pastagens?, perguntou Jacob. Vão ficar com fome se param assim tão cedo antes de lhes dar de comer!8 É que nós só afastamos a pedra e tiramos água depois dos rebanhos estarem todos juntos.9 E enquanto falavam, chegou-se Raquel com o rebanho do pai, porque também era pastora. E como era a sua prima, e o rebanho era o do seu tio, Jacob foi ao poço, afastou a pedra e tirou água para o rebanho. Depois beijou Raquel, e não se conteve, começando a chorar.12 Explicou então que era primo dela, filho da sua tia Rebeca. A moça foi logo a correr contar tudo ao pai, e Labão, assim que viu que era Jacob que chegava, precipitou-se ao seu encontro, recebendo-o com muita afeição, trazendo-o para casa, ouvindo do sobrinho tudo o que este lhe contou da sua vida.14 Tu és realmente da mesma carne, do mesmo sangue que eu!, exclamou Labão comovido. Depois de Jacob ter estado ali com eles um mês inteiro, Labão disse-lhe: Não é por sermos parentes que vais ficar aqui a trabalhar sem salário. Diz-me quanto queres ganhar.16 Labão tinha duas filhas, Leia a mais velha, e a segunda, Raquel. Leia tinha uns olhos muito bonitos, mas Raquel era formosa e tinha encanto. Ora como Jacob amava Raquel, disse: Trabalho para ti durante sete anos, e depois deixas-me casar com Raquel.19 De acordo! Prefiro dar-ta a ti do que a um outro qualquer fora da família!20 Dessa forma trabalhou Jacob sete anos por Raquel; e pareceu-lhe pouco tempo, pelo muito que a amava. Chegou por fim a altura de casar com ela. Cumpri o contrato. Agora dá-me Raquel, para que seja minha mulher, disse a Labão.22 Labão juntou os homens todos do sítio para fazer uma festa celebrando o acontecimento. E quando a noite já ia avançada, Labão, aproveitando-se do escuro, trouxe Leia aos aposentos de Jacob, o qual veio a tomá-la por mulher.24 (Labão deu a Leia, para ser a sua criada, uma empregada da casa, Zilpa.)25 Aconteceu portanto que na manhã seguinte Jacob veio ter todo indignado com Labão: Mas que foi isto? Porque é que me enganaste? Não trabalhei eu sete anos para ter Raquel?26 Mas é que não é costume fazer assim nesta terra, respondeu o sogro. Nunca se dá a filha mais nova em casamento antes da outra! Deixa passar a semana habitual de núpcias, e terás então Raquel também, mas se prometeres trabalhar para mim mais sete anos!28 E Jacob concordou em trabalhar outros sete anos, ficando com Raquel igualmente.29 A criada que o pai deu a Raquel, por sua vez, foi Bila. Raquel tornou-se mulher de Jacob, o qual a amou mais do que a Leia, não se importando de ficar assim a trabalhar por ela mais sete anos ainda.31 O Senhor, vendo que Jacob dava pouca atenção a Leia, deu a esta um filho, enquanto que Raquel se manteve estéril. Leia ficou grávida e teve um filho a quem chamou Rúben , porque disse: O Senhor reparou na minha humilhação. Agora o meu marido passará a amar-me.33 Depois ficou outra vez grávida e teve outro filho a quem chamou Simeão . E exclamou: O Senhor viu que eu não era amada e deu-me outro filho!34 E tornou a conceber e a ter mais um filho, pondo-lhe o nome de Levi . Com certeza que desta vez o meu marido sentirá afeição por mim, pois que já é o terceiro filho que lhe dou!, disse ela. E ainda mais uma vez ficou grávida e deu à luz outro menino chamado Judá . Agora, exclamou ela, só posso fazer uma coisa, é louvar o Senhor! E cessou de ter filhos.

1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.2 And he looked, and behold, a well in the field, and lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in its place.4 And Jacob said to them, My brethren, whence are ye? And they said, We are from Haran.5 And he said to them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? and they said, We know him.6 And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be collected: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks are collected, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.9 And while he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother; that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and she ran and told her father.13 And it came to pass when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh: and he abode with him the space of a month.15 And Laban said to Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for naught? tell me, what shall thy wages be?16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.17 Leah was tender-eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well-favored.18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her.21 And Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife (for my days are fulfilled) that I may go in to her.22 And Laban assembled all the men of the place, and made a feast.23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.24 And Laban gave to his daughter Leah, Zilpah his maid for a handmaid.25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done to me? did I not serve with thee for Rachel? why then hast thou deceived me?26 And Laban said, it must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the first-born.27 Fulfill her week, and we will give thee this also, for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel, his daughter, for a wife also.29 And Laban gave to Rachel, his daughter, Bilhah, his handmaid, to be her maid.30 And he went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.31 And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he made her fruitful: but Rachel was barren.32 And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.33 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.34 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Now this time will my husband adhere to me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.35 And she conceived again, and bore a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah, and left bearing.
