1 And there was a certain man, of Ramathaim-zuphi, of the hill country of Ephraim,whose name, was Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite;2 and, he, had two wives, the name of the one, Hannah, and, the name of the other, Peninnah,and Peninnah had children, but, Hannah, had no children.3 So then that man went up, out of his city, from time to time, to worship and to sacrifice unto Yahweh of hosts, in Shiloh,and, there, were the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests unto Yahweh.4 And, when the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he used to give, to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions;5 and, unto Hannah, used he to give one portion,howbeit, Hannah, he loved, although, Yahweh, had restrained her from having children.6 And her rival used even to cause her great vexation, for the sake of provoking her,because Yahweh had restrained her from having children.7 And, thus, used she to do, year by year, whenever she went up to the house of Yahweh, thus, used she to vex her,and she wept, and would not eat.8 So Elkanah her husband said to herHannah! wherefore shouldst thou weep? and wherefore wilt thou not eat? and wherefore should thy heart be sad? Am, I, not better to thee, than ten sons?9 And Hannah rose up, after she had eaten in Shiloh, and after she had drunk,and, Eli the priest, was sitting upon his chair, by the door-post of the temple of Yahweh;10 and, she being in bitterness of soul, prayed unto Yahweh, and, wept sore.11 And she vowed a vow, and saidYahweh of hosts! If thou wilt, look, upon the humiliation of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man-child, then will I give him unto Yahweh, all the days of his life, and no, razor, shall come upon his head.12 And so it was, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli was watching her mouth.13 But as for, Hannah, she, was speaking in her heart, only her lips, were moving, but, her voice, could not be heard,so Eli thought she had been drunken.14 And Eli said unto her, How long, wilt thou be, drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.15 And Hannah responded and saidNay! my lord; A woman depressed in spirit, am I: neither wine nor strong drink, have I drunk,but I poured out my soul, before Yahweh.16 Do not count thy handmaid for an abandoned woman,for, out of the abundance of my grief and my vexation, have I spoken, hitherto.17 Then responded Eli, and saidGo and prosper! And the, God of Israel, grant thy petition which thou hast asked of him!18 And she said: Let thy serving-woman find favour, in thine eyes. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and, her countenance, was sad no longer.19 And they rose up early in the morning, and worshipped before Yahweh, and returned, and entered their own house, in Ramah,and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and Yahweh remembered her.20 And so it was, when the days had come round during which Hannah was with child, that she bare a son,and called his name Samuel, Because, of Yahweh, I asked him. \fs1521 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up, to offer unto Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his own vow.22 But, Hannah, went not up,for she said to her husband till the boy is weaned, then will I take him, and he shall appear before Yahweh, and abide there evermore.23 And Elkanah her husband said to herDo what is good in thine own eyes, tarry until thou have weaned him, only may Yahweh establish his word! So the woman tarried, and nursed her son, until she weaned him.24 Then took she him up with her, when she had weaned him, with a bullock of three years old, and one ephah of meal, and a skin of wine, and took him to the house of Yahweh, at Shiloh,the boy yet being young.25 So they slew the bullock,and took the boy in, unto Eli.26 And she saidPardon, my lord! By the life of thy soul, my lord,I, am the woman who was standing near thee here, praying unto Yahweh:27 For this boy, I prayed,And Yahweh hath given me my petition which I asked of him.28 Hence, I also, have loaned him unto Yahweh, all the days that he liveth. He, is lent unto Yahweh. And he bowed down there, unto Yahweh.

1 Houve um homem de Ramataim-Zofim, da montanha de Efraim, cujo nome era Elcana, filho de Jeroão, filho de Eliú, filho de Toú, filho de Zufe, efrateu. 2 E este tinha duas mulheres: o nome de uma era Ana, e o nome da outra, Penina; Penina tinha filhos, porém Ana não tinha filhos.

3 Subia, pois, este homem da sua cidade de ano em ano a adorar e a sacrificar ao Senhor dos Exércitos, em Siló; e estavam ali os sacerdotes em Siló; e estavam ali os sacerdotes do Senhor, Hofni e Fineias, os dois filhos de Eli. 4 E sucedeu que, no dia em que Elcana sacrificava, dava ele porções do sacrifício a Penina, sua mulher, e a todos os seus filhos, e a todas as suas filhas. 5 Porém a Ana dava uma parte excelente, porquanto ele amava Ana; porém o Senhor lhe tinha cerrado a madre. 6 E a sua competidora excessivamente a irritava para a embravecer, porquanto o Senhor lhe tinha cerrado a madre. 7 E assim o fazia ele de ano em ano; quando ela subia à Casa do Senhor, assim a outra a irritava; pelo que chorava e não comia. 8 Então, Elcana, seu marido, lhe disse: Ana, por que choras? E por que não comes? E por que está mal o teu coração? Não te sou eu melhor do que dez filhos?

9 Então, Ana se levantou, depois que comeram e beberam em Siló; e Eli, o sacerdote, estava assentado numa cadeira, junto a um pilar do templo do Senhor. 10 Ela, pois, com amargura de alma, orou ao Senhor e chorou abundantemente. 11 E votou um voto, dizendo: Senhor dos Exércitos! Se benignamente atentares para a aflição da tua serva, e de mim te lembrares, e da tua serva te não esqueceres, mas à tua serva deres um filho varão, ao Senhor o darei por todos os dias da sua vida, e sobre a sua cabeça não passará navalha.

12 E sucedeu que, perseverando ela em orar perante o Senhor, Eli fez atenção à sua boca, 13 porquanto Ana, no seu coração, falava, e só se moviam os seus lábios, porém não se ouvia a sua voz; pelo que Eli a teve por embriagada. 14 E disse-lhe Eli: Até quando estarás tu embriagada? Aparta de ti o teu vinho. 15 Porém Ana respondeu e disse: Não, senhor meu, eu sou uma mulher atribulada de espírito; nem vinho nem bebida forte tenho bebido; porém tenho derramado a minha alma perante o Senhor. 16 Não tenhas, pois, a tua serva por filha de Belial; porque da multidão dos meus cuidados e do meu desgosto tenho falado até agora. 17 Então, respondeu Eli e disse: Vai em paz, e o Deus de Israel te conceda a tua petição que lhe pediste. 18 E disse ela: Ache a tua serva graça em teus olhos. Assim, a mulher se foi seu caminho e comeu, e o seu semblante já não era triste.

19 E levantaram-se de madrugada, e adoraram perante o Senhor, e voltaram, e vieram à sua casa, a Ramá. Elcana conheceu a Ana, sua mulher, e o Senhor se lembrou dela.

20 E sucedeu que, passado algum tempo, Ana concebeu, e teve um filho, e chamou o seu nome Samuel, porque, dizia ela, o tenho pedido ao Senhor.

21 E subiu aquele homem Elcana, com toda a sua casa, a sacrificar ao Senhor o sacrifício anual e a cumprir o seu voto. 22 Porém Ana não subiu, mas disse a seu marido: Quando o menino for desmamado, então, o levarei, para que apareça perante o Senhor e lá fique para sempre. 23 E Elcana, seu marido, lhe disse: Faze o que bem te parecer a teus olhos; fica até que o desmames; tão somente confirme o Senhor a sua palavra. Assim, ficou a mulher e deu leite a seu filho, até que o desmamou. 24 E, havendo-o desmamado, o levou consigo, com três bezerros e um efa de farinha e um odre de vinho, e o trouxe à Casa do Senhor, a Siló. E era o menino ainda muito criança. 25 E degolaram um bezerro e assim trouxeram o menino a Eli. 26 E disse ela: Ah! Meu senhor, viva a tua alma, meu senhor; eu sou aquela mulher que aqui esteve contigo, para orar ao Senhor. 27 Por este menino orava eu; e o Senhor me concedeu a minha petição que eu lhe tinha pedido. 28 Pelo que também ao Senhor eu o entreguei, por todos os dias que viver; pois ao Senhor foi pedido. E ele adorou ali ao Senhor.
