1 And Samuel said unto Saul, It was, me, Yahweh sent to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel,now, therefore, hearken thou to the voice of Yahwehs words.2 Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, I have well considered what Amalek did unto Israelhow he lay in wait for him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.3 Now, go and smite Amalek, and devote ye to destruction all that he hath, and spare him not,but thou shalt slay both man and woman, both child and suckling, both ox and sheep, both camel and ass.4 So then Saul called together the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen,and ten thousand men of Judah.5 And Saul came as far as the city of Amalek,and stirred up strife in the ravine.6 Then said Saul unto the KenitesGo, depart, get you down out of the midst of the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them, yet, ye, dealt in lovingkindness, with all the sons of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed out of the midst of the Amalekites.7 And Saul smote Amalek,from Havilah, till thou enterest Shur, which is over against Egypt.8 And he took Agag, king of Amalek, alive,but, all the people, devoted he to destruction at the edge of the sword.9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and the oxen and the lambs, also the fatlings, and all that was good, and would not devote them to destruction,but, all the cattle that was contemptible and diseased, that, devoted they to destruction.10 Then came the word of Yahweh unto Samuel, saying11 I am grieved that I made Saul to be king, for he hath turned back from following me, and, my words, hath he not established. And it was vexing to Samuel, so that he made outcry unto Yahweh, all the night.12 And Samuel rose early to meet Saul, in the morning, and it was told Samuel, sayingSaul having come to Carmel, and lo! having set him up a sign, hath gone round, and passed over, and descended to Gilgal.13 And Samuel came unto Saul,and Saul said unto himBlessed, be thou by Yahweh: I have established the word of Yahweh.14 And Samuel said, What then is this bleating of sheep, in mine ears,and the lowing of oxen, which I can hear?15 Then said SaulFrom the Amalekites, have they brought them in; in that the people spared the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto Yahweh thy God,but, the rest, have we devoted to destruction.16 Then said Samuel unto Saul, Stay, and let me tell thee, that which Yahweh hath spoken unto me, this night. And he said to himSpeak.17 And Samuel said, Was it not, when, little, thou wast in thine own eyes, that thou wast made, head of the tribes of Israel,and that Yahweh anointed thee to be king over Israel?18 So then Yahweh sent thee on a journey,and saidGo, and devastate to destruction, the sinnersthe Amalekites, and make war against them, until they have consumed them.19 Wherefore, then, didst thou not hearken unto the voice of Yahweh,but didst rush upon the spoil, and do that which was wrong in the sight of Yahweh?20 And Saul said unto SamuelAs indeed I have hearkened unto the voice of Yahweh, and have been on the journey on which Yahweh sent me,and have brought in Agag, king of Amalek, and, the Amalekites, have I devoted to destruction.21 And the people took, of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things so devoted,to sacrifice unto Yahweh thy God, in Gilgal.22 Then said SamuelDoth that which is pleasing unto Yahweh consist in ascending-offerings and sacrifices, So much as in hearkening unto the voice of Yahweh? Lo! to hearken, is, better, than, sacrifice. And, to give heed, than, the fat of rams;23 For, as the sin of divination, is, rebelliousness,and, as transgression with household gods, is, stubbornness,Because thou hast rejected the word of Yahweh, therefore hath he rejected thee from being king.24 Then said Saul unto SamuelI have sinned; for I have transgressed the bidding of Yahweh, and thy words,for I feared the people, and hearkened unto their voice.25 Now, therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin,and turn again with me, that I may bow down unto Yahweh.26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not turn again with thee,Because thou hast rejected the word of Yahweh, therefore hath Yahweh rejected thee from being king over Israel.27 And, when Samuel turned about to go away, then laid he hold of the skirt of his robe, and it was rent.28 And Samuel said unto him, Yahweh hath rent the kingdom of Israel from off thee, to-day,and will give it unto a neighbour of thine, who is better than thou.29 Moreover also, the Eminence of Israel, will not lie, neither will he repent,For no, iron of earth, is, he, to repent!30 Then he said: I have sinned, Now, honour me, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel,and turn again with me, then will I bow down unto Yahweh thy God.31 So then Samuel turned again, after Sauland Saul bowed down unto Yahweh.32 Then said SamuelBring ye near unto meAgag, king of Amalek, And Agag came unto him, in fetters. Then said Agag, Surely, terrible, is the bitterness of death!33 And Samuel said, As women have been made childless by thy sword, So, childless among women, shall be, thine own mother. And Samuel cut Agag asunder before Yahweh, in Gilgal.34 Then Samuel departed unto Ramah,but, Saul, went up unto his own house, at Gibeah of Saul.35 And Samuel did no more see Saul, until the day of his death, for Samuel pined for Saul,but, Yahweh, was grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

1 Então, disse Samuel a Saul: Enviou-me o Senhor a ungir-te rei sobre o seu povo, sobre Israel; ouve, pois, agora a voz das palavras do Senhor. 2 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eu me recordei do que fez Amaleque a Israel; como se lhe opôs no caminho, quando subia do Egito. 3 Vai, pois, agora, e fere a Amaleque, e destrói totalmente tudo o que tiver, e não lhe perdoes; porém matarás desde o homem até à mulher, desde os meninos até aos de peito, desde os bois até às ovelhas e desde os camelos até aos jumentos.

4 E Saul convocou o povo e os contou em Telaim: duzentos mil homens de pé e dez mil homens de Judá. 5 Chegando, pois, Saul à cidade de Amaleque, pôs emboscada no vale. 6 E disse Saul aos queneus: Ide-vos, retirai-vos e saí do meio dos amalequitas, para que vos não destrua juntamente com eles, porque vós usastes de misericórdia com todos os filhos de Israel, quando subiram do Egito. Assim, os queneus se retiraram do meio dos amalequitas. 7 Então, feriu Saul os amalequitas, desde Havilá até chegar a Sur, que está defronte do Egito. 8 E tomou vivo a Agague, rei dos amalequitas; porém a todo o povo destruiu a fio de espada. 9 E Saul e o povo perdoaram a Agague, e ao melhor das ovelhas e das vacas, e às da segunda sorte, e aos cordeiros, e ao melhor que havia e não os quiseram destruir totalmente; porém a toda coisa vil e desprezível destruíram totalmente.

10 Então, veio a palavra do Senhor a Samuel, dizendo: 11 Arrependo-me de haver posto a Saul como rei; porquanto deixou de me seguir e não executou as minhas palavras. Então, Samuel se contristou e toda a noite clamou ao Senhor. 12 E madrugou Samuel para encontrar a Saul pela manhã; e anunciou-se a Samuel, dizendo: Já chegou Saul ao Carmelo, e eis que levantou para si uma coluna. Então, fez volta, e passou, e desceu a Gilgal. 13 Veio, pois, Samuel a Saul; e Saul lhe disse: Bendito sejas tu do Senhor; executei a palavra do Senhor. 14 Então, disse Samuel: Que balido, pois, de ovelhas é este nos meus ouvidos, e o mugido de vacas que ouço? 15 E disse Saul: De Amaleque as trouxeram; porque o povo perdoou ao melhor das ovelhas e das vacas, para as oferecer ao Senhor, teu Deus; o resto, porém, temos destruído totalmente. 16 Então, disse Samuel a Saul: Espera, e te declararei o que o Senhor me disse esta noite. E ele disse-lhe: Fala.

17 E disse Samuel: Porventura, sendo tu pequeno aos teus olhos, não foste por cabeça das tribos de Israel? E o Senhor te ungiu rei sobre Israel. 18 E enviou-te o Senhor a este caminho e disse: Vai, e destrói totalmente a estes pecadores, os amalequitas, e peleja contra eles, até que os aniquiles. 19 Por que, pois, não deste ouvidos à voz do Senhor? Antes, voaste ao despojo e fizeste o que era mal aos olhos do Senhor. 20 Então, disse Saul a Samuel: Antes, dei ouvidos à voz do Senhor e caminhei no caminho pelo qual o Senhor me enviou; e trouxe a Agague, rei de Amaleque, e os amalequitas destruí totalmente; 21 mas o povo tomou do despojo ovelhas e vacas, o melhor do interdito, para oferecer ao Senhor, teu Deus, em Gilgal. 22 Porém Samuel disse: Tem, porventura, o Senhor tanto prazer em holocaustos e sacrifícios como em que se obedeça à palavra do Senhor? Eis que o obedecer é melhor do que o sacrificar; e o atender melhor é do que a gordura de carneiros. 23 Porque a rebelião é como o pecado de feitiçaria, e o porfiar é como iniquidade e idolatria. Porquanto tu rejeitaste a palavra do Senhor, ele também te rejeitou a ti, para que não sejas rei.

24 Então, disse Saul a Samuel: Pequei, porquanto tenho traspassado o dito do Senhor e as tuas palavras; porque temi o povo e dei ouvidos à sua voz. 25 Agora, pois, te rogo, perdoa-me o meu pecado e volta comigo, para que adore o Senhor. 26 Porém Samuel disse a Saul: Não tornarei contigo; porquanto rejeitaste a palavra do Senhor, já te rejeitou o Senhor, para que não sejas rei sobre Israel. 27 E, virando-se Samuel para se ir, ele lhe pegou pela borda da capa e a rasgou. 28 Então, Samuel lhe disse: O Senhor tem rasgado de ti hoje o reino de Israel e o tem dado ao teu próximo, melhor do que tu. 29 E também aquele que é a Força de Israel não mente nem se arrepende; porquanto não é um homem, para que se arrependa. 30 Disse ele então: Pequei; honra-me, porém, agora diante dos anciãos do meu povo e diante de Israel; e volta comigo, para que adore o Senhor, teu Deus. 31 Então, Samuel se tornou atrás de Saul, e Saul adorou ao Senhor.

32 Então, disse Samuel: Trazei-me aqui Agague, rei dos amalequitas. E Agague veio a ele animosamente; e disse Agague: Na verdade, já passou a amargura da morte. 33 Disse, porém, Samuel: Assim como a tua espada desfilhou as mulheres, assim ficará desfilhada a tua mãe entre as mulheres. Então, Samuel despedaçou Agague perante o Senhor, em Gilgal.

34 Então, Samuel se foi a Ramá; e Saul subiu à sua casa, a Gibeá de Saul. 35 E nunca mais viu Samuel a Saul até ao dia da sua morte; porque Samuel teve dó de Saul. E o Senhor se arrependeu de que pusera a Saul rei sobre Israel.
