1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem,for, to Shechem, had all Israel come, to make him king.2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam son of Nebat, who was in Egypt-whither he had fled from the face the kingheard of it, then returned Jeroboam out of Egypt.3 And they sent, and called him, so Jeroboam and all Israel came,and spake unto Rehoboam, saying:4 Thy father, made our yoke oppressive,now, therefore, lighten thou somewhat the oppressive servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, and we will serve thee.5 And he said unto them, Yet three days, and then return unto me,and the people departed.6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who had been standing before Solomon his father, while he yet lived, saying,How do, ye, counsel to return answer unto this people?7 And they spake unto him saying, If thou wilt be kind to this people, and please them, and speak unto them kind words, then will they be thy servants, all the days.8 But he declined the counsel of the old men, which they gave him,and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who were standing before him.9 And he said unto them, What do, ye, counsel that we should return as answer, unto this people,who have spoken unto me saying, Lighten thou somewhat the yoke, which thy father put upon us?10 Then spake with him the young men who had grown up with him, saying, Thus, shalt thou speak unto the people who have spoken unto thee saying, Thy father, made our yoke heavy, Thou, therefore, lighten somewhat our yoke,Thus, shalt thou say unto them, My little finger, is thicker than my fathers loins;11 Now, therefore, my father, laid upon you a heavy yoke, but, I, will add to your yoke,My father, chastised you with whips, but, I, with scorpions,12 So Jeroboam and all the people came unto Rehoboam, on the third day,as the king spake, saying, Return unto me on the third day.13 And the king answered them harshly,and King Rehoboam declined the counsel of the old men;14 and spake unto them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father, made your yoke heavy, but, I, will add thereunto,My father, chastised you with whips, But, I, with scorpions.15 So the king hearkened not unto the people,for there had come to be a turn from God, to the end Yahweh might establish his word which he had spoken by means of Ahijah the Shilonite, unto Jeroboam, son of Nebat.16 And, when, all Israel, that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, sayingWhat portion have, we, in David, or inheritance in the son of Jesse? Every man, to your homes, O Israel! Now, see to thine own house, O David! And all Israel departed to their homes.17 But, as for the sons of Israel who were dwelling in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the tribute, and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. So, King Rehoboam, hasted to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.19 Thus Israel rebelled against the house of Davidunto this day.

1 E foi Roboão a Siquém, porque todo o Israel tinha vindo a Siquém para o fazerem rei. 2 Sucedeu, pois, que, ouvindo-o Jeroboão, filho de Nebate (o qual estava, então, no Egito, para onde fugira da presença do rei Salomão), voltou Jeroboão do Egito. 3 Porque enviaram a ele e o chamaram; e veio, pois, Jeroboão com todo o Israel; e falaram a Roboão, dizendo: 4 Teu pai fez duro o nosso jugo; alivia tu, pois, agora, a dura servidão de teu pai e o pesado jugo que nos tinha imposto, e servir-te-emos. 5 E ele lhes disse: Daqui a três dias, tornai a mim. Então, o povo se foi. 6 E teve Roboão conselho com os anciãos que estiveram perante Salomão, seu pai, enquanto viveu, dizendo: Como aconselhais vós que se responda a este povo? 7 E eles lhe falaram, dizendo: Se te fizeres benigno e afável com este povo e lhes falares boas palavras, todos os dias serão teus servos. 8 Porém ele deixou o conselho que os anciãos lhe deram; e teve conselho com os jovens que haviam crescido com ele e estavam perante ele. 9 E disse-lhes: Que aconselhais vós que respondamos a este povo, que me falou, dizendo: Alivia-nos o jugo que teu pai nos impôs? 10 E os jovens que com ele haviam crescido lhe falaram, dizendo: Assim dirás a este povo, que te falou, dizendo: Teu pai agravou o nosso jugo, tu, porém, alivia-nos. Assim, pois, lhe falarás: O meu dedo mínimo é mais grosso do que os lombos de meu pai. 11 Assim que, se meu pai vos fez carregar de um jugo pesado, eu ainda acrescentarei sobre o vosso jugo; meu pai vos castigou com açoites, porém eu vos castigarei com escorpiões.

12 Veio, pois, Jeroboão e todo o povo a Roboão, no terceiro dia, como o rei tinha ordenado, dizendo: Tornai a mim ao terceiro dia. 13 E o rei lhes respondeu asperamente, porque o rei Roboão deixou o conselho dos anciãos. 14 E falou-lhes conforme o conselho dos jovens, dizendo: Meu pai agravou o vosso jugo, porém eu lhes acrescentarei mais; meu pai vos castigou com açoites, porém eu vos castigarei com escorpiões. 15 Assim, o rei não deu ouvidos ao povo, porque esta mudança vinha de Deus, para que o Senhor confirmasse a sua palavra, a qual falara pelo ministério de Aías, o silonita, a Jeroboão, filho de Nebate.

16 Vendo, pois, todo o Israel que o rei lhes não dava ouvidos, então, o povo respondeu ao rei, dizendo: Que parte temos nós com Davi? Já não temos herança no filho de Jessé; Israel, cada um às suas tendas! Olha, agora, pela tua casa, ó Davi. Assim, todo o Israel se foi para as suas tendas. 17 Porém, quanto aos filhos de Israel que habitavam nas cidades de Judá, sobre eles reinou Roboão. 18 Então, o rei Roboão enviou a Adorão, que tinha o cargo dos tributos; porém os filhos de Israel o apedrejaram com pedras, de que morreu; então, o rei Roboão se apressou a subir para o seu carro e fugiu para Jerusalém. 19 Assim, se revoltaram os israelitas contra a casa de Davi, até ao dia de hoje.
