1 Twenty-five years old, was Amaziah, when he began to reign, and, twenty-nine years, reigned he in Jerusalem,and, the name of his mother, was Jehoaddan, of Jerusalem.2 And he did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh,only not with a whole heart.3 And it came to pass, when the kingdom was confirmed unto him, that he slew his servants who had smitten the king his father;4 but, their sons, he put not to death,but as it is written in the lawin the book of Moseshow that Yahweh commanded, saying-Fathers, shall not die for, sons, and Sons, shall not die, for, fathers, but Each man, for his own sin, shall die.5 And Amaziah gathered Judah together, and appointed them by their ancestral houses, as rulers of thousands and as rulers of hundreds, for all Judah and Benjamin,and he numbered them, from twenty years old and upwards, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, who could grasp spear and shield.6 And he hired out of Israel, a hundred thousand heroes of valour, for a hundred talents of silver.7 But, a man of God, came unto him, saying, O king! let not the host of Israel come with thee,for Yahweh is not with Israel, any of the sons of Ephraim.8 But, if thou art going, do, be strong for the battle,God will cause thee to fall before the enemy, for there is strength in God, to help or to cause to fall.9 And Amaziah said unto the man of God, What then shall be done as to the hundred talents, which I have given to the company of Israel? Then said the man of God, Yahweh is able to give thee much more than this.10 So Amaziah separated them, unto the company which had come unto him out of Ephraim, to depart unto their own place,wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, so they returned to their own place, in a heat of anger.11 And, Amaziah, took courage, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt,and smote of the sons of Seir, ten thousand;12 and the sons of Judah took captive, ten thousand alive, and brought to the top of the crag,and cast them down from the top of the crag, and, all of them, were torn asunder.13 But, as for the sons of the company which Amaziah sent back from going with him to the war, they spread themselves out against the cities of Judah, from Samaria, even unto Beth-horon,and smote of them three thousand, and took great plunder.14 And so it was, after Amaziah came in from smiting the Edomites, that he brought in the gods of the sons of Seir, and set them up for himself, as gods,and, before them, used he to bow himself down, and, unto them, used he to burn a perfume.15 Then was kindled the anger of Yahweh, against Amaziah,and he sent unto him a prophet, and said unto him, Wherefore hast thou sought the gods of the people, which delivered not their own people out of thy hand?16 And it came to pass, as he spake unto him, that he said to him, To be, counselor to the king, have we appointed thee? forbear thou, wherefore should they smite thee? So the prophet forbare, and saidI know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel, and sent unto Joash, son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel, saying,Come, let us look one another in the face!18 And Joash king of Israel sent unto Amaziah king of Judah, saying, A thistle that was in Lebanon, sent unto a cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Come! give thy daughter unto my son to wife,but there passed by a beast of the field that was in Lebanon, and trampled down the thistle.19 Thou hast said-Lo! thou hast smitten the Edomites, and thy heart hath lifted thee up to display honour,-Now, abide in thine own house, wherefore shouldst thou engage in strife with Misfortune, and fall, thou and Judah with thee?20 But Amaziah hearkened not, because, from God, it was, to the end he might deliver them up into hand,because they had sought the gods of Edom.21 So Joash king of Israel came up, and they looked one another in the face, he, and Amaziah king of Judah,in Beth-shemesh, which belongeth unto Judah.22 Then was Judah defeated, before Israel,and they fled every man to his own home;23 and, Amaziah king of Judah, son of Joash son of Jehoahaz, was taken by Joash king of Israel, in Beth-shemesh,and he brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, from the gate of Ephraim as far as the corner-gate, four hundred cubits;24 and, all the gold and the silver and all the utensils that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the house of the king, and hostages, he took,-and returned to Samaria.25 And Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived, after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel,fifteen years.26 Now, the rest of the story of Amaziah, first and last, lo! it is written in the book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.27 And, after the time that Amaziah turned away from following Yahweh, they made against him a conspiracy in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish,but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.28 And they brought him on horses,-and buried him with his fathers, in the city of Judah.

1 Era Amazias da idade de vinte e cinco anos quando começou a reinar e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém; e era o nome de sua mãe Jeoadã, de Jerusalém. 2 E fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, porém não com coração inteiro. 3 Sucedeu, pois, que, sendo-lhe o reino já confirmado, matou os seus servos que feriram o rei, seu pai; 4 porém não matou os seus filhos, mas fez como na Lei está escrito, no livro de Moisés, como o Senhor ordenou, dizendo: Não morrerão os pais pelos filhos, nem os filhos morrerão pelos pais; mas cada um morrerá pelo seu pecado.

5 E Amazias ajuntou a Judá e o pôs segundo as casas dos pais, por chefes de milhares e por chefes de centenas, por todo o Judá e Benjamim; e os numerou de vinte anos e daí para cima e achou deles trezentos mil escolhidos que saíam ao exército e levavam lança e escudo. 6 Também de Israel tomou a soldo cem mil varões valentes, por cem talentos de prata. 7 Porém um homem de Deus veio a ele, dizendo: Ó rei, não deixes ir contigo o exército de Israel, porque o Senhor não é com Israel, a saber, com os filhos de Efraim. 8 Se porém, fores, faze-o, esforça-te para a peleja; Deus te fará cair diante do inimigo, porque força há em Deus para ajudar e para fazer cair. 9 E disse Amazias ao homem de Deus: Que se fará, pois, dos cem talentos de prata que dei às tropas de Israel? E disse o homem de Deus: Mais tem o Senhor que te dar do que isso. 10 Então, separou Amazias as tropas que lhe tinham vindo de Efraim, para que se fossem ao seu lugar; pelo que se acendeu a sua ira contra Judá, e voltaram para o seu lugar em ardor de ira. 11 Esforçou-se, pois, Amazias, e conduziu o seu povo, e foi-se ao vale do Sal; e feriu dos filhos de Seir dez mil. 12 Também os filhos de Judá prenderam vivos dez mil, e os trouxeram ao cume da rocha, e do mais alto da rocha os lançaram abaixo, e todos arrebentaram. 13 Porém os homens das tropas que Amazias despedira para que não fossem com ele à peleja deram sobre as cidades de Judá, desde Samaria até Bete-Horom; e feriram deles três mil e saquearam grande despojo.

14 E sucedeu que, depois que Amazias veio da matança dos edomitas, trouxe consigo os deuses dos filhos de Seir, tomou-os por seus deuses, e prostrou-se diante deles, e queimou-lhes incenso. 15 Então, a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Amazias, e mandou-lhe um profeta, que lhe disse: Por que buscaste deuses do povo, que a seu povo não livraram das tuas mãos? 16 E sucedeu que, falando-lhe ele, lhe respondeu: Puseram-te por conselheiro do rei? Cala-te, por que te feririam? Então, o profeta parou e disse: Bem vejo eu que já Deus deliberou destruir-te, porquanto fizeste isso e não deste ouvidos a meu conselho.

17 E, tendo tomado conselho, Amazias, rei de Judá, enviou a Joás, filho de Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, rei de Israel, a dizer: Vem, vejamo-nos face a face. 18 Porém Joás, rei de Israel, mandou dizer a Amazias, rei de Judá: O cardo que estava no Líbano mandou dizer ao cedro que estava no Líbano: Dá tua filha a meu filho por mulher; porém os animais do campo que estão no Líbano passaram e pisaram o cardo. 19 Tu dizes: Eis que tenho ferido os edomitas, e elevou-se o teu coração, para te gloriares; agora, pois, fica em tua casa; por que te meterias no mal, para caíres tu e Judá contigo?

20 Porém Amazias não lhe deu ouvidos, porque isto vinha de Deus, para entregá-los nas mãos dos seus inimigos, porquanto buscaram os deuses dos edomitas. 21 E Joás, rei de Israel, subiu; e ele e Amazias, rei de Judá, viram-se face a face em Bete-Semes, que está em Judá. 22 E Judá foi ferido diante de Israel, e foi cada um para as suas tendas. 23 E Joás, rei de Israel, prendeu a Amazias, rei de Judá, filho de Joás, o filho de Jeoacaz, em Bete-Semes, e o trouxe a Jerusalém; e derribou o muro de Jerusalém, desde a Porta de Efraim até à Porta da Esquina, um trecho de quatrocentos côvados. 24 Também tomou todo o ouro, e a prata, e todos os utensílios que se acharam na Casa de Deus com Obede-Edom, e os tesouros da casa do rei, e os reféns e voltou para Samaria.

25 E viveu Amazias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, depois da morte de Joás, filho de Jeoacaz, rei de Israel, quinze anos. 26 Quanto ao mais dos atos de Amazias, tanto os primeiros como os últimos, eis que, porventura, não estão escritos no livro da história dos reis de Judá e de Israel? 27 E, desde o tempo que Amazias se desviou do Senhor, conspiraram contra ele em Jerusalém, porém ele fugiu para Laquis; mas enviaram após ele a Laquis e o mataram ali. 28 E o trouxeram sobre cavalos e o sepultaram com seus pais na Cidade de Davi.
