1 Better a name, than precious ointment,and the day of death, than the day of ones birth.2 Better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of banqueting, for, that, is the end of all men,and, the living, should take it to his heart.3 Better is grief than laughter,for, by the marring of the face, amended is the heart.4 The heart of the wise, is in the house of mourning, but, the heart of dullards, in the house of mirth.5 Better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for any man to hear the song of dullards,6 For, as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so, is the laughter of the dullard,even this, then, was vanity.7 For, oppression, maddeneth the wise,and a bribe, destroyeth the understanding.8 Better the latter end of a thing, than the beginning thereof,Better a patient spirit, than a haughty spirit.9 Do not be rash in thy spirit, to be indignant,for, indignation, in the bosom of dullards, doth remain.10 Do not say, What hath happened, that, the former days, were better than these? for, not wisely, askest thou concerning this.11 Good is wisdom, with an inheritance,and a profit, to such as see the sun.12 For, a protection, is wisdom, and, a protection, is silver,but, the advantage of knowledge, is, that, wisdom, giveth life to the possessors thereof.13 Consider the work of God,for who can straighten what he hath bent?14 In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but, in the day of misfortune, consider,Even the one equally with the other, hath God made, to the end man might find outafter himnothing.15 Everything, had I seen, in my days of vanity,Here was a righteous man, perishing in his righteousness, and there was a lawless man, continuing long in his wickedness.16 Do not become so very righteous, neither count thyself wise beyond measure,wherefore shouldst thou destroy thyself?17 Do not be so very lawless, neither become thou foolish,wherefore shouldst thou die, before thy time?18 It is well that thou shouldst lay fast hold of this, but, even from the other, do not withdraw thy hand,for, he that revereth God, shall come forth out of them all.19 Wisdom, bringeth more strength to a wise man, than ten heroes, that are in the city.20 For, as for men, there is none righteous in the earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.21 Moreover, not to all the words which men speak, do thou apply thy heart,lest thou hear thine own servant reviling thee!22 For truly, many times, thy heart knoweth,that, even thou thyself, hast reviled others.23 All this, have I proved by wisdom,I said, I will be wise, but, that, was far from me.24 Far away, is that which hath been,and deep, deep, who can find it out?25 Resolved, I, in my heart, to know and search out, and to seek wisdom, and a conclusion,and to know lawlessness stupidity, and folly to be madness.26 I, could indeed find, to be, more bitter than death, the woman, whose heart is, snares and nets, and her hands, bonds,whoso is pleasing before God, shall escape from her, but, he that sinneth, shall be captured by her.27 See! this, have I found, saith the Proclaimer one by one, to find a conclusion;28 what my soul still sought, yet I found not,one man out of a thousand, have I found, but, a woman among all these, have I not found.29 Only, see, this, have I found, That God made man upright, but, they, have sought out many devices.

1 Melhor é a boa fama do que o melhor unguento, e o dia da morte, do que o dia do nascimento de alguém. 2 Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto do que ir à casa onde há banquete, porque ali se vê o fim de todos os homens; e os vivos o aplicam ao seu coração. 3 Melhor é a tristeza do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto se faz melhor o coração. 4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos, na casa da alegria. 5 Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que ouvir alguém a canção do tolo. 6 Porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo de uma panela, tal é o riso do tolo; também isso é vaidade. 7 Verdadeiramente a opressão faz endoidecer até o sábio, e o suborno corrompe o coração. 8 Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o princípio delas; melhor é o longânimo do que o altivo de coração. 9 Não te apresses no teu espírito a irar-te, porque a ira abriga-se no seio dos tolos. 10 Nunca digas: Por que foram os dias passados melhores do que estes? Porque nunca com sabedoria isso perguntarias. 11 Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e dela tiram proveito os que veem o sol. 12 Porque a sabedoria serve de sombra, como de sombra serve o dinheiro; mas a excelência da sabedoria é que ela dá vida ao seu possuidor. 13 Atenta para a obra de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto? 14 No dia da prosperidade, goza do bem, mas, no dia da adversidade, considera; porque também Deus fez este em oposição àquele, para que o homem nada ache que tenha de vir depois dele.

15 Tudo isso vi nos dias da minha vaidade; há um justo que perece na sua justiça, e há um ímpio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade. 16 Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sábio; por que te destruirias a ti mesmo? 17 Não sejas demasiadamente ímpio, nem sejas louco; por que morrerias fora de teu tempo? 18 Bom é que retenhas isso e também disso não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isso.

19 A sabedoria fortalece o sábio, mais do que dez governadores que haja na cidade. 20 Na verdade, não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça bem e nunca peque. 21 Tampouco apliques o teu coração a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir que o teu servo te amaldiçoa. 22 Porque o teu coração também já confessou muitas vezes que tu amaldiçoaste a outros.

23 Tudo isso inquiri com sabedoria e disse: Sabedoria adquirirei; mas ela ainda estava longe de mim. 24 Longe está o que foi e profundíssimo; quem o achará? 25 Eu tornei a voltar-me e determinei em meu coração saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão, e conhecer a loucura da impiedade e a doidice dos desvarios. 26 E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte: a mulher cujo coração são redes e laços e cujas mãos são ataduras; quem for bom diante de Deus escapará dela, mas o pecador virá a ser preso por ela. 27 Vedes aqui, isso achei, diz o Pregador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para achar a causa, 28 causa que a minha alma ainda busca, mas não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas estas não achei. 29 Vede, isto tão somente achei: que Deus fez ao homem reto, mas ele buscou muitas invenções.
