1 After these things, Jesus went away across the sea of Galilee, that is, of Tiberias;2 and there was following him a great multitude, because they had been viewing the signs which he did upon such as were sick.3 But Jesus had gone up into the mountain, and, there, was sitting with his disciples.4 Now the passover was near, the feast of the Jews.5 So then Jesus, lifting up his eyes, and beholding that a great multitude was coming unto him, saith unto PhilipWhence are we to buy loaves, that these may eat?6 But, this, he was saying, to test him; for, he himself, knew, what he was about to do.7 Philip answered himTwo hundred denaries-worth of loaves, are not sufficient for them, that, each one, may take, a little.8 One from among his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith unto him9 There is a little lad here, that hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes,but, these,what are they, for such numbers?10 Jesus saidMake the people recline. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men reclined, to the number of about five thousand.11 Jesus therefore took the loaves, and, giving thanks, went on distributing unto them that reclined; in like manner, of the small fishes also: as much as they were wishing.12 And, when they were well-filled, he saith unto his disciplesGather up the broken pieces left over, that nothing be lost.13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets, with broken pieces out of the five barley loaves,which were left over by them who had eaten.14 The people, therefore, seeing what signs he wrought, began to sayThis, is, of a truth, the prophet who was to come into the world.15 Jesus, therefore, getting to know that they were about to come, and seize him, that they might make him king, retired again into the mountain, himself, alone.16 But, when evening came, his disciples went down unto the sea;17 and, entering into a boat, were going across the sea into Capernaum. And, dark, already, had it become, and, not yet, had Jesus reached them;18 moreover the sea, by reason of a great wind that blew, was rising high.19 Having therefore rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they observe Jesus, walking upon the sea, and, near the boat, coming; and they were affrighted.20 But, he, saith unto themIt is, I: be not affrighted!21 They were willing, therefore, to receive him into the boat; and, straightway, the boat was at land, whither they had been slowly going.22 On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, saw that there was not, another small-boat, there, save one,and that Jesus entered not, along with his disciples, unto the boat, but that, alone, his disciples departed:23 howbeit there came boats out of Tiberias, near the place where they did eat the bread, after the Lord had given thanks:24 When, therefore, the multitude saw, that, Jesus, was not there, nor yet his disciples, they themselves, got into the small boats, and came unto Capernaum, seeking Jesus;25 and, finding him on the other side of the sea, they said unto himRabbi! when, camest thou, hither?26 Jesus answered them, and saidVerily, verily, I say unto you: Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves and were filled.27 Be working, not for the food that perisheth, but for the food that endureth unto life age-abiding,which, the Son of Man, unto you, will give; for upon, the same, hath the Father, even God, set his seal.28 They said, therefore, unto himWhat are we to do, that we may be working the works of God?29 Jesus answered, and said unto themThis, is the work of God: that ye believe on him whom, he, hath sent forth.30 They said, therefore, unto himWhat, then, art, thou, doing, by way of sign, that we may see, and believe in thee: what art thou working?31 Our fathers, did eat, the manna, in the desert,just as it is written: Bread out of heaven, he gave them to eat.32 Jesus said unto themVerily, verily, I say unto you: Not Moses, gave you the bread out of heaven; but, my Father, giveth you the real bread out of heaven.33 For, the bread of God, is that which is coming down out of heaven, and giving, life, unto the world.34 They said, therefore, unto himSir! Evermore, give us this bread.35 Jesus said unto themI, am the bread of life: he that cometh unto me, in nowise shall hunger, and, he that believeth on me, in nowise shall thirst, any more.36 But I told youYe have even seen me , and yet do not believe.37 All that which the Father is giving me, unto me, will have come, and, him that cometh unto me, in nowise will I cast out,38 Because I have come down from heaven,Not that I should be doing my own will, but the will of him that sent me.39 And, this, is the will of him that sent me, That, of all that which he hath given me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.40 For, this, is the will of my Father, That, every one that vieweth the Son, and believeth on him, should have life age-abiding, and, I, should raise him up, at the last day.41 The Jews, therefore, began to murmur concerning him, because he saidI, am the bread that came down out of heaven;42 and were sayingIs not, this, Jesus, the son of Joseph,of whom, we, know the father and the mother! How is it then, that he, now, saith: Out of heaven, have I come down?43 Jesus answered, and said unto themBe not murmuring, one with another:44 No one, can come unto me, except, the Father who sent me, draw him,and, I, will raise him up, in the last day.45 It is written in the prophets,And they shall be, all, the instructed of God: Every one who hath heard of the Father, and learned, cometh unto me.46 Not that any one hath seen, the Father, save he who is from God,this one, hath seen the Father.47 Verily, verily, I say unto you: He that believeth, hath life age-abiding.48 I am the bread of life:49 Your fathers, did eat, in the desert, the manna,and died:50 This, is the bread which, out of heaven, cometh down, that one, thereof, may eat,and not die.51 I, am the living bread, which, out of heaven, came down: If one eat of this bread, he shall live unto times age-abiding; and, the bread, moreover, which, I, will give, is, my fleshfor the worlds life.52 The Jews, therefore, began to strive one with another, sayingHow can this one, unto us, give his flesh to eat?53 Jesus, therefore, said unto themVerily, verily, I say unto youExcept ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, ye have not life within yourselves.54 He that feedeth upon my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath life age-abiding, and, I, will raise him up at the last day;55 For, my flesh, is, true, food, and, my blood, is, true, drink:56 He that feedeth upon my flesh, and drinketh my blood, in me, abideth, and, I, in him.57 Just as the living Father sent me,and I live by reason of the Father, he also that feedeth upon me, even he, shall live by reason of me.58 This, is the bread, which, out of heaven, came down:Not just as your fathers did eatand died! He that feedeth upon this bread, shall live unto times age-abiding.59 These things, said he, as, in a synagogue, he was teaching, in Capernaum.60 Many, of his disciples, therefore, when they heard, saidHard, is this discourse,Who can, thereunto, hearken?61 But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring concerning this, said unto themDoth, this, cause, you, to stumble?62 then, if ye should view the Son of Man ascending where he was before?63 The spirit, it is, that giveth life,the flesh, profiteth, nothing: The declarations which, I, have spoken unto you, are, spirit, and, are, life.64 But there are some from among you, who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe, and who it was would deliver him up;65 and he went on to sayFor this cause, have I said unto you: No one, can come unto me, except it have been given him, of the Father.66 Because of this, many from among his disciples, went away back, and, no longer, with him, were walking.67 Jesus, therefore, said unto the twelveAre, ye also, wishing to withdraw?68 Simon Peter answered himLord! unto whom, shall we go? Declarations o life age-abiding, thou hast;69 And, we, have believed, and come to know,that, thou, art the Holy One of God.70 Jesus answered themDid not, I, make choice, of you, the twelve? And yet, from among you, one, is, an adversary.71 Now he was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot: for, the same, was about to deliver him up,one of the twelve.

1 Depois disso, partiu Jesus para o outro lado do mar da Galileia, que é o de Tiberíades. 2 E grande multidão o seguia, porque via os sinais que operava sobre os enfermos. 3 E Jesus subiu ao monte e assentou-se ali com os seus discípulos. 4 E a Páscoa, a festa dos judeus, estava próxima. 5 Então, Jesus, levantando os olhos e vendo que uma grande multidão vinha ter com ele, disse a Filipe: Onde compraremos pão, para estes comerem? 6 Mas dizia isso para o experimentar; porque ele bem sabia o que havia de fazer. 7 Filipe respondeu-lhe: Duzentos dinheiros de pão não lhes bastarão, para que cada um deles tome um pouco. 8 E um dos seus discípulos, André, irmão de Simão Pedro, disse-lhe: 9 Está aqui um rapaz que tem cinco pães de cevada e dois peixinhos; mas que é isso para tantos? 10 E disse Jesus: Mandai assentar os homens. E havia muita relva naquele lugar. Assentaram-se, pois, os homens em número de quase cinco mil. 11 E Jesus tomou os pães e, havendo dado graças, repartiu-os pelos discípulos, e os discípulos, pelos que estavam assentados; e igualmente também os peixes, quanto eles queriam. 12 E, quando estavam saciados, disse aos seus discípulos: Recolhei os pedaços que sobejaram, para que nada se perca. 13 Recolheram-nos, pois, e encheram doze cestos de pedaços dos cinco pães de cevada, que sobejaram aos que haviam comido. 14 Vendo, pois, aqueles homens o milagre que Jesus tinha feito, diziam: Este é, verdadeiramente, o profeta que devia vir ao mundo. 15 Sabendo, pois, Jesus que haviam de vir arrebatá-lo, para o fazerem rei, tornou a retirar-se, ele só, para o monte.

16 E, quando veio a tarde, os seus discípulos desceram para o mar. 17 E, entrando no barco, passaram o mar em direção a Cafarnaum; e era já escuro, e ainda Jesus não tinha chegado perto deles. 18 E o mar se levantou, porque um grande vento assoprava. 19 E, tendo navegado uns vinte e cinco ou trinta estádios, viram Jesus andando sobre o mar e aproximando-se do barco, e temeram. 20 Porém ele lhes disse: Sou eu; não temais. 21 Então, eles, de boa mente, o receberam no barco; e logo o barco chegou à terra para onde iam.

22 No dia seguinte, a multidão que estava do outro lado do mar, vendo que não havia ali mais do que um barquinho e que Jesus não entrara com seus discípulos naquele barquinho, mas que os seus discípulos tinham ido sós 23 (contudo, outros barquinhos tinham chegado de Tiberíades, perto do lugar onde comeram o pão, havendo o Senhor dado graças); 24 vendo, pois, a multidão que Jesus não estava ali, nem os seus discípulos, entraram eles também nos barcos e foram a Cafarnaum, em busca de Jesus. 25 E, achando-o no outro lado do mar, disseram-lhe: Rabi, quando chegaste aqui? 26 Jesus respondeu e disse-lhes: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que me buscais não pelos sinais que vistes, mas porque comestes do pão e vos saciastes. 27 Trabalhai não pela comida que perece, mas pela comida que permanece para a vida eterna, a qual o Filho do Homem vos dará, porque a este o Pai, Deus, o selou. 28 Disseram-lhe, pois: Que faremos para executarmos as obras de Deus? 29 Jesus respondeu e disse-lhes: A obra de Deus é esta: que creiais naquele que ele enviou. 30 Disseram-lhe, pois: Que sinal, pois, fazes tu, para que o vejamos, e creiamos em ti? Que operas tu? 31 Nossos pais comeram o maná no deserto, como está escrito: Deu-lhes a comer o pão do céu. 32 Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que Moisés não vos deu o pão do céu, mas meu Pai vos dá o verdadeiro pão do céu. 33 Porque o pão de Deus é aquele que desce do céu e dá vida ao mundo. 34 Disseram-lhe, pois: Senhor, dá-nos sempre desse pão. 35 E Jesus lhes disse: Eu sou o pão da vida; aquele que vem a mim não terá fome; e quem crê em mim nunca terá sede. 36 Mas já vos disse que também vós me vistes e, contudo, não credes. 37 Tudo o que o Pai me dá virá a mim; e o que vem a mim de maneira nenhuma o lançarei fora. 38 Porque eu desci do céu não para fazer a minha vontade, mas a vontade daquele que me enviou. 39 E a vontade do Pai, que me enviou, é esta: que nenhum de todos aqueles que me deu se perca, mas que o ressuscite no último Dia. 40 Porquanto a vontade daquele que me enviou é esta: que todo aquele que vê o Filho e crê nele tenha a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia.

41 Murmuravam, pois, dele os judeus, porque dissera: Eu sou o pão que desceu do céu. 42 E diziam: Não é este Jesus, o filho de José, cujo pai e mãe nós conhecemos? Como, pois, diz ele: Desci do céu? 43 Respondeu, pois, Jesus e disse-lhes: Não murmureis entre vós. 44 Ninguém pode vir a mim, se o Pai, que me enviou, o não trouxer; e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia. 45 Está escrito nos profetas: E serão todos ensinados por Deus. Portanto, todo aquele que do Pai ouviu e aprendeu vem a mim. 46 Não que alguém visse ao Pai, a não ser aquele que é de Deus; este tem visto ao Pai. 47 Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que aquele que crê em mim tem a vida eterna. 48 Eu sou o pão da vida. 49 Vossos pais comeram o maná no deserto e morreram. 50 Este é o pão que desce do céu, para que o que dele comer não morra. 51 Eu sou o pão vivo que desceu do céu; se alguém comer desse pão, viverá para sempre; e o pão que eu der é a minha carne, que eu darei pela vida do mundo.

52 Disputavam, pois, os judeus entre si, dizendo: Como nos pode dar este a sua carne a comer? 53 Jesus, pois, lhes disse: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que, se não comerdes a carne do Filho do Homem e não beberdes o seu sangue, não tereis vida em vós mesmos. 54 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue tem a vida eterna, e eu o ressuscitarei no último Dia. 55 Porque a minha carne verdadeiramente é comida, e o meu sangue verdadeiramente é bebida. 56 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue permanece em mim, e eu, nele. 57 Assim como o Pai, que vive, me enviou, e eu vivo pelo Pai, assim quem de mim se alimenta também viverá por mim. 58 Este é o pão que desceu do céu; não é o caso de vossos pais, que comeram o maná e morreram; quem comer este pão viverá para sempre. 59 Ele disse essas coisas na sinagoga, ensinando em Cafarnaum.

60 Muitos, pois, dos seus discípulos, ouvindo isso, disseram: Duro é este discurso; quem o pode ouvir? 61 Sabendo, pois, Jesus em si mesmo que os seus discípulos murmuravam a respeito disso, disse-lhes: Isto vos escandaliza? 62 Que seria, pois, se vísseis subir o Filho do Homem para onde primeiro estava? 63 O espírito é o que vivifica, a carne para nada aproveita; as palavras que eu vos disse são espírito e vida. 64 Mas há alguns de vós que não creem. Porque bem sabia Jesus, desde o princípio, quem eram os que não criam e quem era o que o havia de entregar. 65 E dizia: Por isso, eu vos disse que ninguém pode vir a mim, se por meu Pai lhe não for concedido.

66 Desde então, muitos dos seus discípulos tornaram para trás e já não andavam com ele. 67 Então, disse Jesus aos doze: Quereis vós também retirar-vos? 68 Respondeu-lhe, pois, Simão Pedro: Senhor, para quem iremos nós? Tu tens as palavras da vida eterna, 69 e nós temos crido e conhecido que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus. 70 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Não vos escolhi a vós os doze? E um de vós é um diabo. 71 E isso dizia ele de Judas Iscariotes, filho de Simão, porque este o havia de entregar, sendo um dos doze.
