1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:2 Should, a wise man, answer unreal knowledge? or fill, with the east wind, his inner man?3 Disputing with discourse that doth no good, or with speech, wherein is no profit?4 But, thou, wouldst take away reverence, and wouldst attain unto meditation before GOD.5 For thine own mouth would teach thine iniquity, and thou wouldst choose the tongue of the crafty.6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and, not I, And, thine own lips, shall testify against thee.7 The first of mankind, wast thou born? Or, before the hills, wast thou brought forth?8 In the secret council of GOD, hast thou been wont to hearken? Or canst thou attain for thyself unto wisdom?9 What knowest thou, that we know not? understandest thou, and the same, is not with us?10 Both hoary and venerable, are among us, one mightier than thy father in days!11 Too small for thee, are the consolations of GOD? or a word spoken gently with thee?12 How doth thine own heart carry thee away, and how thine eyes do roll!13 For thy spirit, replieth against GOD, and thou bringest forthout of thy mouthwords!14 What is a mortal, that he should be pure? or that righteous should be one born of a woman?15 Lo! in his holy ones, he putteth not confidence, and, the heavens, are not pure in his eyes:16 How much less when one is detested and corrupt, a man who drinketh inlike waterperversity.17 I will tell theehear me, Since this I have seen, I must needs declare it.18 Which, wise men, tell, and deny not from their fathers.19 To them alone, was the earth given, and no alien passed through their midst:20 All the days of the lawless man, he, doth writhe with pain, and, the number of years, is hidden from the tyrant;21 A noise of dreadful things, is in his ears, In prosperity, the destroyer cometh upon him;22 He hath no confidence to come back out of darkness, he, being destined to the power oft the sword;23 A wanderer, he, for bread, ? He knoweth that, prepared by his own hand, is the day of darkness;24 Distress and anguish shall startle him, It shall overpower him, like a king ready for the onset:25 Because he had stretched outagainst GODhis hand, and, against the Almighty, had been wont to behave himself proudly;26 He used to run against him with uplifted neck, with the stout bosses of his bucklers;27 For he had covered his face with his fatness, and had gathered a superabundance on his loins;28 And had inhabited demolished cities, houses, wherein men would not dwell, that were destined to become heaps.29 He shall not be rich, nor shall his substance continue, neither shall their shadow stretch along on the earth;30 He shall not depart out of darkness, his young branch, shall the flame dry up, and he shall depart, by the breath of his own mouth!31 Let no one trust in him thatby vanityis deceived, for, vanity, shall be his recompense;32 Before his day, shall it be accomplished, with, his palm-top, not covered with leaves;33 He shall wronglike a vinehis sour grapes, and shall cast offas an olive-treehis blossom.34 For, the family of the impious, is unfruitful, and, a fire, hath devoured the tents of bribery;35 Conceiving mischief, and bringing forth iniquity, yea, their inmost soul, prepareth deceit.

1 Então, respondeu Elifaz, o temanita, e disse: 2 Porventura, dará o sábio, em resposta, ciência de vento? E encherá o seu ventre de vento oriental, 3 arguindo com palavras que de nada servem e com razões que de nada aproveitam? 4 E tu tens feito vão o temor e diminuis os rogos diante de Deus. 5 Porque a tua boca declara a tua iniquidade; e tu escolheste a língua dos astutos. 6 A tua boca te condena, e não eu; e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.

7 És tu, porventura, o primeiro homem que foi nascido? Ou foste gerado antes dos outeiros? 8 Ou ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus e a ti somente limitaste a sabedoria? 9 Que sabes tu, que nós não saibamos? Que entendes, que não haja em nós? 10 Também há entre nós encanecidos e idosos, muito mais idosos do que teu pai. 11 Porventura, as consolações de Deus te são pequenas? Ou alguma coisa se oculta em ti? 12 Por que te arrebata o teu coração e por que piscas os teus olhos, 13 para virares contra Deus o teu espírito e deixares sair tais palavras da tua boca? 14 Que é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para que fique justo? 15 Eis que nos seus santos não confiaria, e nem os céus são puros aos seus olhos. 16 Quanto mais abominável e corrupto é o homem, que bebe a iniquidade como a água?

17 Escuta-me, e mostrar-to-ei; e o que vi te contarei; 18 o que os sábios anunciaram, e o que ouviram de seus pais, e não ocultaram 19 (aos quais somente se dera a terra, e nenhum estranho passou por entre eles): 20 Todos os dias o ímpio se dá pena a si mesmo, no curto número de anos que se reservam para o tirano. 21 O sonido dos horrores está nos seus ouvidos; até na paz lhe sobrevém o assolador. 22 Não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada. 23 Anda vagueando por pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que o dia das trevas lhe está perto, à mão. 24 Assombram-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como o rei preparado para a peleja. 25 Porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus e contra o Todo-Poderoso se embraveceu. 26 Arremete contra ele com dura cerviz e com os pontos grossos dos seus escudos. 27 Porquanto cobriu o rosto com a sua gordura e criou enxúndias nas ilhargas. 28 E habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguém morava, que estavam a ponto de fazer-se montões de ruínas. 29 Não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões. 30 Não escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus renovos e, ao assopro da boca de Deus, desaparecerá. 31 Não confie, pois, na vaidade enganando-se a si mesmo, porque a vaidade será a sua recompensa. 32 Antes do seu dia ela se consumará; e o seu ramo não reverdecerá. 33 Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes, como as da vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a da oliveira. 34 Porque o ajuntamento dos hipócritas se fará estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno. 35 Concebem o trabalho e produzem a iniquidade; e o seu ventre prepara enganos.
