1 Moreover Ahith'ophel said to Ab'salom, "Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will set out and pursue David tonight.2 I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged, and throw him into a panic; and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down the king only,3 and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man, and all the people will be at peace."4 And the advice pleased Ab'salom and all the elders of Israel.5 Then Ab'salom said, "Call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say."6 And when Hushai came to Ab'salom, Ab'salom said to him, "Thus has Ahith'ophel spoken; shall we do as he advises? If not, you speak."7 Then Hushai said to Ab'salom, "This time the counsel which Ahith'ophel has given is not good."8 Hushai said moreover, "You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people.9 Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits, or in some other place. And when some of the people fall at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, `There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Ab'salom.'10 Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men.11 But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beer-sheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person.12 So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and all the men with him not one will be left.13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there."14 And Ab'salom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahith'ophel." For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahith'ophel, so that the LORD might bring evil upon Ab'salom.15 Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abi'athar the priests, "Thus and so did Ahith'ophel counsel Ab'salom and the elders of Israel; and thus and so have I counseled.16 Now therefore send quickly and tell David, `Do not lodge tonight at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.'"17 Now Jonathan and Ahim'a-az were waiting at En-ro'gel; a maidservant used to go and tell them, and they would go and tell King David; for they must not be seen entering the city.18 But a lad saw them, and told Ab'salom; so both of them went away quickly, and came to the house of a man at Bahu'rim, who had a well in his courtyard; and they went down into it.19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth, and scattered grain upon it; and nothing was known of it.20 When Ab'salom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, "Where are Ahim'a-az and Jonathan?" And the woman said to them, "They have gone over the brook of water." And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.21 After they had gone, the men came up out of the well, and went and told King David. They said to David, "Arise, and go quickly over the water; for thus and so has Ahith'ophel counseled against you."22 Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed the Jordan; by daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.23 When Ahith'ophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and went off home to his own city. And he set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.24 Then David came to Mahana'im. And Ab'salom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.25 Now Ab'salom had set Ama'sa over the army instead of Jo'ab. Ama'sa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ish'maelite, who had married Ab'igal the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeru'iah, Jo'ab's mother.26 And Israel and Ab'salom encamped in the land of Gilead.27 When David came to Mahana'im, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Machir the son of Am'miel from Lo-debar, and Barzil'lai the Gileadite from Ro'gelim,28 brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, meal, parched grain, beans and lentils,29 honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat; for they said, "The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness."

1 Depois Aitofel disse a Absalão:

— Deixe-me escolher doze mil homens, e eu sairei esta noite para perseguir Davi. 2 Eu o atacarei enquanto ele está cansado e desanimado. Ele ficará com medo, e todos os seus homens fugirão. Então matarei somente o rei 3 e trarei de volta todos os homens dele para o senhor, como uma esposa que volta para o seu marido. Já que o senhor quer matar somente um homem, o resto do povo será deixado em paz.

4 Absalão achou que esse conselho era bom, e todos os líderes israelitas também acharam.

5 Aí Absalão disse:

— Chamem agora Husai, e vamos ouvir o que ele tem a dizer.

6 Quando Husai chegou, Absalão disse:

— O conselho que Aitofel nos deu é este; devemos segui-lo? Se não, diga você o que devemos fazer.

7 Husai respondeu:

— Desta vez o conselho de Aitofel não é bom. 8 O senhor sabe que o seu pai Davi e os seus homens são lutadores valentes e que eles estão furiosos como uma ursa na floresta, de quem roubaram os filhotes. O seu pai é um soldado experiente e durante a noite ele não fica com os seus soldados. 9 Agora mesmo ele deve estar escondido numa caverna ou em algum outro lugar. Logo que Davi atacar os seus soldados, todos os que ouvirem falar a respeito disso dirão que os soldados de Absalão foram derrotados. 10 Então até os soldados mais corajosos, mesmo aqueles que são ferozes como leões, ficarão com medo. Pois todos em Israel sabem que o seu pai é um grande soldado e que os homens que estão com ele são lutadores valentes. 11 O meu conselho é que o senhor reúna, de uma ponta a outra do país, todos os israelitas, tantos quantos são os grãos de areia da praia do mar, e que o senhor mesmo os guie na batalha. 12 Onde quer que Davi estiver, nós o encontraremos antes mesmo que ele saiba o que está acontecendo. Assim nem ele nem nenhum dos seus homens escaparão. 13 Se ele fugir para dentro de alguma cidade construída num morro, todo o nosso povo trará cordas, arrasará a cidade e não deixará nem uma pedra lá em cima.

14 Aí Absalão e todos os israelitas disseram:

— O conselho de Husai é melhor do que o de Aitofel.

O Senhor Deus havia resolvido que os bons conselhos de Aitofel não seriam seguidos, para que assim o castigo do Senhor caísse sobre Absalão.

15 Então Husai contou aos sacerdotes Zadoque e Abiatar o conselho que tinha dado a Absalão e aos líderes israelitas e também o conselho que Aitofel tinha dado. 16 E disse:

— Agora mandem depressa uma mensagem a Davi dizendo a ele que não passe a noite nos caminhos do deserto. Que Davi atravesse o rio Jordão imediatamente para que ele e os seus homens não sejam todos destruídos!

17 Jônatas e Aimaás estavam esperando perto da fonte de Rogel porque não queriam se arriscar a serem vistos entrando na cidade. Uma empregada ia lá de vez em quando e informava sobre o que estava acontecendo; então eles iam contar ao rei Davi. 18 Mas dessa vez um rapaz os viu e contou a Absalão. Então Jônatas e Aimaás foram depressa para a casa de um certo homem, na cidade de Baurim. Havia um poço perto da casa, e eles entraram dentro dele. 19 A esposa do homem pegou uma coberta, estendeu sobre a boca do poço e em cima dela espalhou cereais socados para que ninguém pudesse perceber nada. 20 Os oficiais de Absalão chegaram lá e perguntaram à mulher:

— Onde estão Aimaás e Jônatas?

— Eles atravessaram o rio! — respondeu ela.

Aí os homens os procuraram, mas não conseguiram achar; então voltaram para Jerusalém. 21 Depois que eles foram embora, Aimaás e Jônatas saíram do poço e foram avisar o rei Davi. Contaram o que Aitofel tinha planejado contra ele e disseram:

— Atravesse o rio depressa!

22 Então Davi e os seus homens começaram a atravessar o rio Jordão e, ao nascer do dia, todos eles já haviam atravessado.

23 Quando Aitofel viu que o seu conselho não tinha sido seguido, arreou o seu jumento e voltou para a sua cidade. E, depois de pôr os seus negócios em ordem, enforcou-se. E foi sepultado no túmulo do seu pai.

24 Quando Absalão e os seus soldados atravessaram o rio Jordão, Davi já havia chegado à cidade de Maanaim. 25 Absalão tinha colocado Amasa no comando do seu exército, no lugar de Joabe. Amasa era filho de um homem chamado Itra, o ismaelita; a mãe dele era Abigail, filha de Naás e irmã de Zeruia, a mãe de Joabe. 26 Absalão e os israelitas acamparam na terra de Gileade.

27 Quando Davi chegou a Maanaim, encontrou-se com Sobi, filho de Naás, da cidade de Rabá, em Amom; com Maquir, filho de Amiel, da cidade de Lo-Debar; e com Barzilai, que era da cidade de Rogelim, em Gileade. 28,29 Eles levaram bacias, vasilhas de barro, camas e também alimentos para Davi e os seus homens. Levaram também trigo, cevada, farinha, feijão, grãos torrados, ervilhas, mel, queijo, coalhada e algumas ovelhas. Eles sabiam que, no deserto Davi, e os seus homens ficariam com fome, com sede e cansados.
