1 Und nun höre, Israel, die Satzungen und Rechte, die ich euch zu tun lehre, auf daß ihr lebet und hineinkommet und das Land einnehmet, das euch der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, gibt.
2 Ihr sollt nichts hinzutun zu dem Worte, das ich euch gebiete, und sollt auch nichts davontun, damit ihr die Gebote des HERRN, eures Gottes, haltet, die ich euch gebiete.
3 Eure Augen haben gesehen, was der HERR wegen des Baal-Peor getan hat. Denn alle, die Baal-Peor nachwandelten, hat der HERR, dein Gott, aus deiner Mitte vertilgt!
4 Aber ihr, die ihr dem HERRN, eurem Gott, anhinget, lebet alle heute noch.
5 Siehe, ich habe euch Satzungen und Rechte gelehrt, wie mir der HERR, mein Gott, geboten hat, daß ihr also tun sollt im Lande, darein ihr kommen werdet, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.
6 So behaltet sie nun und tut sie; denn das ist eure Weisheit und euer Verstand vor allen Völkern. Wenn sie alle diese Gebote hören, werden sie sagen: Wie ist doch dieses große Volk ein so weises und verständiges Volk!
7 Denn wo ist ein so großes Volk, zu dem sich die Götter also nahen, wie der HERR, unser Gott, es tut, so oft wir ihn anrufen?
8 Und wo ist ein so großes Volk, das so gerechte Satzungen und Rechte habe, wie dieses ganze Gesetz ist, das ich euch heute vorlege?
9 Nur hüte dich und bewahre deine Seele wohl, daß du die Geschichten nicht vergessest, die deine Augen gesehen haben, und daß sie nicht aus deinem Herzen kommen alle Tage deines Lebens; sondern du sollst sie deinen Kindern und Kindeskindern kundtun;
10 was geschah an dem Tage, als du vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, standest am Berge Horeb, als der HERR zu mir sprach: Versammle mir das Volk, daß ich sie meine Worte hören lasse, und damit sie mich fürchten lernen alle Tage ihres Lebens auf Erden, und damit sie die Worte auch ihre Kinder lehren.
11 Und ihr tratet herzu und standet unten am Berg. Aber der Berg brannte im Feuer bis in den Himmel hinein, der voller Finsternis, Wolken und Dunkel war.
12 Und der HERR redete mit euch mitten aus dem Feuer. Die Stimme seiner Worte hörtet ihr, aber ihr sahet keine Gestalt, sondern vernahmet nur die Stimme.
13 Und er verkündigte euch seinen Bund, den er euch zu halten gebot, nämlich die zehn Worte, die er auf zwei steinerne Tafeln schrieb.
14 Und der HERR gebot mir zu jener Zeit, daß ich euch die Satzungen und Rechte lehre, die ihr tun sollt in dem Lande, darein ihr ziehet, um es einzunehmen.
15 So bewahret nun eure Seelen wohl, weil ihr keine Gestalt gesehen habt an dem Tage, als der HERR aus dem Feuer heraus mit euch redete auf dem Berge Horeb;
16 daß ihr nicht verderblich handelt und euch irgend ein gemeißeltes Bild machet, irgend eine männliche oder weibliche Figur,
17 oder das Bild irgend eines Viehes, das auf Erden ist, oder eines Vogels, der am Himmel fliegt,
18 oder das Bild eines Reptils, das auf dem Erdboden kriecht, oder der Fische, die im Wasser unter der Erde sind;
19 daß du deine Augen auch nicht gen Himmel hebest, und die Sonne und den Mond und die Sterne und das ganze Heer des Himmels beschauest und dich verführen lassest, sie anzubeten und ihnen zu dienen, die doch der HERR, dein Gott, allen Völkern unter dem ganzen Himmel zugeteilt hat.
20 Euch aber hat der HERR angenommen und aus dem eisernen Ofen, aus Ägypten, geführt, daß ihr sein Erbvolk sein solltet, wie es heute der Fall ist.
21 Und der HERR war um euretwillen so zornig über mich, daß er schwur, ich sollte nicht über den Jordan gehen, noch in das gute Land kommen, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir zum Erbe gibt;
22 sondern ich muß in diesem Lande sterben und darf nicht über den Jordan gehen; ihr aber dürft hinübergehen und jenes gute Land einnehmen.
23 So hütet euch nun, daß ihr des Bundes des HERRN, eures Gottes, den er mit euch gemacht hat, nicht vergesset und euch nicht Bilder machet von irgend einer Gestalt, was der HERR, dein Gott, dir verboten hat.
24 Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein verzehrendes Feuer, ein eifriger Gott.
25 Wenn du nun Kinder und Kindeskinder zeugst und ihr alt werdet im Lande und verderblich handelt und euch Bilder machet von irgend einer Gestalt und vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott, Übles tut, daß ihr ihn erzürnet,
26 so rufe ich heute Himmel und Erde zu Zeugen wider euch an, daß ihr gewiß bald umkommen werdet in dem Lande, wohin ihr über den Jordan ziehet, um es einzunehmen; ihr werdet nicht lange darin wohnen, sondern sicherlich vertilgt werden!
27 Und der HERR wird euch unter die Völker zerstreuen, und es wird eine geringe Zahl von euch übrigbleiben unter den Heiden, dahin euch der HERR führen wird.
28 Daselbst werdet ihr den Göttern dienen, die der Menschen Hände Werk sind, Holz und Stein, die weder sehen noch hören noch essen noch riechen.
29 Wenn du aber daselbst den HERRN, deinen Gott, suchen wirst, so wirst du ihn finden, ja wenn du ihn von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele suchen wirst.
30 Wenn du in der Not bist und dich alle diese Dinge treffen, so wirst du in den letzten Tagen zu dem HERRN, deinem Gott, umkehren und seiner Stimme gehorsam sein;
31 denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott; Er wird dich nicht verlassen, noch verderben; Er wird auch des Bundes, den er deinen Vätern geschworen hat, nicht vergessen.
32 Denn frage doch nach den früheren Zeiten, die vor dir gewesen sind, von dem Tage an, als Gott den Menschen auf Erden erschuf, und von einem Ende des Himmels bis zum andern, ob je ein solch großes Ding geschehen oder je dergleichen gehört worden sei:
33 Ob je ein Volk die Stimme Gottes gehört habe aus dem Feuer reden, wie du sie gehört hast, und dennoch lebe;
34 oder ob je ein Gott versucht habe, hinzugehen und sich ein Volk mitten aus einem andern Volk zu nehmen durch große Prüfungen, durch Zeichen, durch Wunder, durch Kampf und durch eine mächtige Hand und durch einen ausgestreckten Arm und durch schreckliche, große Taten, wie das alles der HERR, euer Gott, mit euch in Ägypten vor deinen Augen getan hat?
35 Dir ist es gezeigt worden, auf daß du wissest, daß der HERR Gott ist, und keiner sonst als er allein.
36 Er hat dich vom Himmel her seine Stimme hören lassen, daß er dich unterwiese; und auf Erden hat er dir sein großes Feuer gezeigt, und du hast seine Worte aus dem Feuer gehört.
37 Und weil er deine Väter liebte, darum hat er ihren Samen nach ihnen erwählt und dich in eigener Person durch seine große Kraft aus Ägypten ausgeführt,
38 daß er vor dir her größere und stärkere Völker, als du bist, vertriebe, und dich in ihr Land führte und dasselbe dir zum Erbteil gäbe, wie es heute der Fall ist.
39 So sollst du nun heute wissen und zu Herzen fassen, daß der HERR der alleinige Gott ist oben im Himmel und unten auf Erden, und keiner sonst.
40 Darum beobachte seine Satzungen und seine Gebote, die ich dir heute gebiete, so wird es dir und deinen Kindern nach dir wohl gehen, und du wirst lange leben in dem Lande, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, gibt, für alle Zeiten.
41 Damals sonderte Mose drei Städte aus, diesseits des Jordan, gegen Aufgang der Sonne,
42 damit der Totschläger dorthin fliehen könne, der seinen Nächsten unversehens getötet hat, ohne ihm zuvor feind gewesen zu sein, (daß er in eine dieser Städte fliehe und am Leben bleibe)
43 nämlich Bezer in der Steppe, im ebenen Lande, für die Rubeniter, Ramot in Gilead für die Gaditer, und Golan in Basan für die Manassiter.
44 Dies ist das Gesetz, das Mose den Kindern Israel vorlegte;
45 das sind die Zeugnisse, die Satzungen und Rechte, welche Mose den Kindern Israel sagte, als sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren,
46 diesseits des Jordan, im Tal, Beth-Peor gegenüber, im Lande Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, der zu Hesbon wohnte, den Mose und die Kinder Israel schlugen, als sie aus Ägypten zogen, und dessen Land sie einnahmen,
47 samt dem Lande Ogs, des Königs zu Basan, der beiden Könige der Amoriter, die diesseits des Jordan waren, gegen Aufgang der Sonne;
48 von Aroer an, welche am Ufer des Arnon liegt, bis an den Berg Sion, das ist der Hermon.
49 Und die ganze Ebene diesseits des Jordan, gegen Aufgang, bis an das Meer der Ebene unterhalb der Abhänge des Pisga.
1 `And now, Israel, hearken unto the statutes, and unto the judgments which I am teaching you to do, so that ye live, and have gone in, and possessed the land which Jehovah God of your fathers is giving to you.
2 Ye do not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor diminish from it, to keep the commands of Jehovah your God which I am commanding you.
3 `Your eyes are seeing that which Jehovah hath done in Baal-Peor, for every man who hath gone after Baal-Peor, Jehovah thy God hath destroyed him from thy midst;
4 and ye who are cleaving to Jehovah your God, [are] alive, all of you, to-day.
5 `See, I have taught you statutes and judgments, as Jehovah my God hath commanded me -- to do so, in the midst of the land whither ye are going in to possess it;
6 and ye have kept and done [them] (for it [is] your wisdom and your understanding) before the eyes of the peoples who hear all these statutes, and they have said, Only, a people wise and understanding [is] this great nation.
7 `For which [is] the great nation that hath God near unto it, as Jehovah our God, in all we have called unto him?
8 and which [is] the great nation which hath righteous statutes and judgments according to all this law which I am setting before you to-day?
9 `Only, take heed to thyself, and watch thy soul exceedingly, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they turn aside from thy heart, all days of thy life; and thou hast made them known to thy sons, and to thy sons` sons.
10 `The day when thou hast stood before Jehovah thy God in Horeb -- in Jehovah`s saying unto me, Assemble to Me the people, and I cause them to hear My words, so that they learn to fear Me all the days that they are alive on the ground, and their sons they teach; --
11 and ye draw near and stand under the mountain, and the mountain is burning with fire unto the heart of the heavens -- darkness, cloud, yea, thick darkness:
12 `And Jehovah speaketh unto you out of the midst of the fire; a voice of words ye are hearing and a similitude ye are not seeing, only a voice;
13 and He declareth to you His covenant, which He hath commanded you to do, the Ten Matters, and He writeth them upon two tables of stone.
14 `And me hath Jehovah commanded at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, for your doing them in the land whither ye are passing over to possess it;
15 and ye have been very watchful of your souls, for ye have not seen any similitude in the day of Jehovah`s speaking unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire,
16 lest ye do corruptly, and have made to you a graven image, a similitude of any figure, a form of male or female --
17 a form of any beast which [is] in the earth -- a form of any winged bird which flieth in the heavens --
18 a form of any creeping thing on the ground -- a form of any fish which [is] in the waters under the earth;
19 `And lest thou lift up thine eyes towards the heavens, and hast seen the sun, and the moon, and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and thou hast been forced, and hast bowed thyself to them, and served them, which Jehovah thy God hath apportioned to all the peoples under the whole heavens.
20 `And you hath Jehovah taken, and He is bringing you out from the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be to Him for a people -- an inheritance, as [at] this day.
21 `And Jehovah hath shewed himself wroth with me because of your words, and sweareth to my not passing over the Jordan, and to my not going in unto the good land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance;
22 for I am dying in this land; I am not passing over the Jordan, and ye are passing over, and have possessed this good land.
23 `Take heed to yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of Jehovah your God, which He hath made with you, and have made to yourselves a graven image, a similitude of anything [concerning] which Jehovah thy God hath charged thee:
24 for Jehovah thy God is a fire consuming -- a zealous God.
25 `When thou begettest sons and sons` sons, and ye have become old in the land, and have done corruptly, and have made a graven image, a similitude of anything, and have done the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, to provoke Him to anger: --
26 I have caused to testify against you this day the heavens and the earth, that ye do perish utterly hastily from off the land whither ye are passing over the Jordan to possess it; ye do not prolong days upon it, but are utterly destroyed;
27 and Jehovah hath scattered you among the peoples, and ye have been left few in number among the nations, whither Jehovah leadeth you,
28 and ye have served there gods, work of man`s hands, wood and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29 `And -- ye have sought from thence Jehovah thy God, and hast found, when thou seekest Him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
30 in distress [being] to thee, and all these things have found thee, in the latter end of the days, and thou hast turned back unto Jehovah thy God, and hast hearkened to His voice;
31 for a merciful God [is] Jehovah thy God; He doth not fail thee, nor destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers, which He hath sworn to them.
32 `For, ask, I pray thee, at the former days which have been before thee, from the day that God prepared man on the earth, and from the [one] end of the heavens even unto the [other] end of the heavens, whether there hath been as this great thing -- or hath been heard like it?
33 Hath a people heard the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, thou -- and doth live?
34 Or hath God tried to go in to take to Himself, a nation from the midst of a nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a strong hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors -- according to all that Jehovah your God hath done to you, in Egypt, before your eyes?
35 Thou, thou hast been shewn [it], to know that Jehovah He [is] God; there is none else besides Him.
36 `From the heavens He hath caused thee to hear His voice, to instruct thee, and on earth He hath shewed thee His great fire, and His words thou hast heard out of the midst of the fire.
37 `And because that He hath loved thy fathers, He doth also fix on their seed after them, and doth bring thee out, in His presence, by His great power, from Egypt:
38 to dispossess nations greater and stronger than thou, from thy presence, to bring thee in to give to thee their land -- an inheritance, as [at] this day.
39 `And thou hast known to-day, and hast turned [it] back unto thy heart, that Jehovah He [is] God, in the heavens above, and on the earth beneath -- there is none else;
40 and thou hast kept His statutes and His commands which I am commanding thee to-day, so that it is well to thee, and to thy sons after thee, and so that thou prolongest days on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- all the days.`
41 Then Moses separateth three cities beyond the Jordan, towards the sun-rising,
42 for the fleeing thither of the man-slayer, who slayeth his neighbour unknowingly, and he is not hating him heretofore, and he hath fled unto one of these cities, and he hath lived:
43 Bezer, in the wilderness, in the land of the plain, of the Reubenite; and Ramoth, in Gilead, of the Gadite; and Golan, in Bashan, of the Manassahite.
44 And this [is] the law which Moses hath set before the sons of Israel;
45 these [are] the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses hath spoken unto the sons of Israel, in their coming out of Egypt,
46 beyond the Jordan, in the valley over-against Beth-Peor, in the land of Sihon, king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel have smitten, in their coming out of Egypt,
47 and they possess his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorite who [are] beyond the Jordan, [towards] the sun-rising;
48 from Aroer, which [is] by the edge of the brook Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which [is] Hermon --
49 and all the plain beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.
