1 Estas são as palavras que Moisés falou a todo o Israel além do Jordão no deserto, na Arabá defronte de Sufe, entre Parã, Tôfel, Labã, Hazerote e Di-Zaabe.2 É viagem de onze dias desde Horebe, pelo caminho do monte Seir, até Cades-Barnéia.3 No ano quadragésimo, no undécimo mês, no primeiro dia do mês falou Moisés aos filhos de Israel conforme tudo o que Jeová lhe havia ordenado com relação a eles,4 depois de ter derrotado a Seom, rei dos amorreus, que habitava em Hesbom, e a Ogue, rei de Basã, que habitava em Astarote, em Edrei.5 Além do Jordão, na terra de Moabe, resolveu Moisés explicar esta lei, dizendo:6 Jeová nosso Deus falou-nos em Horebe: Assaz vos tendes demorado neste monte.7 Voltai, ponde-vos a caminho, e ide à região montanhosa dos amorreus, e a todos os lugares vizinhos da Arabá, da região montanhosa, da Sefelá, do Neguebe, da costa marítima, terra dos cananeus, e do Líbano, até o grande rio, o rio Eufrates.8 Eis que vos entreguei esta terra; entrai e possuí a terra que Jeová prometeu com juramento a vossos pais, a Abraão, a Isaque, e a Jacó, a eles e à sua semente depois deles.9 Eu vos disse nesse tempo: Não posso sozinho levar-vos;10 Jeová vosso Deus vos tem multiplicado, e em multidão sois hoje como as estrelas do céu.11 Jeová, Deus de vossos pais, vos faça mil vezes mais numerosos do que sois, e vos abençoe, como vos prometeu.12 Como posso sozinho levar o vosso peso, a vossa carga e a vossa contenda?13 Tomai-vos homens sábios, e entendidos e experimentados segundo as vossas tribos, e pô-los-ei por cabeças sobre vós.14 Respondestes-me: É bom fazer o que disseste.15 Tomei, pois, os cabeças das vossas tribos, homens sábios e entendidos, e fi-los cabeças sobre vós, capitães de mil, capitães de cem, capitães de cinqüenta e capitães de dez, e oficiais, segundo as vossas tribos.16 Mandei aos vossos juízes nesse tempo, dizendo: Ouvi as causas entre vossos irmãos, e julgai com justiça entre um homem e seu irmão, ou o estrangeiro que está com ele.17 Ao julgardes, não vos deixareis levar de respeitos humanos. Do mesmo modo ouvireis o pequeno como o grande; não temereis o rosto de homem algum, porque o juízo é de Deus. A causa que for demasiado difícil para vós, a trareis para mim, e ouvi-la-ei.18 Ordenei-vos nesse tempo tudo o que deveis fazer.19 Tendo partido de Horebe, passamos por todo aquele grande e medonho deserto que vistes, no caminho da região montanhosa dos amorreus, como Jeová nosso Deus nos ordenou; e chegamos a Cades-Barnéia.20 Então eu vos disse: Sois chegados à região montanhosa dos amorreus, a qual Jeová nosso Deus nos está dando.21 Eis que Jeová teu Deus te entregou a terra; sobe, e toma posse dela, como te prometeu Jeová, Deus de teus pais; não temas, nem te assustes.22 Então todos vós chegastes a mim, e dissestes: Enviemos homens adiante de nós, que nos espiem a terra, e nos ensinem o caminho por que devemos subir, e as cidades a que devemos ir.23 Isto me pareceu bem, e tomei doze homens dentre vós, um homem de cada tribo;24 eles, tendo-se posto a caminho, subiram a região montanhosa, e chegaram ao vale de Escol, e espiaram a terra.25 Tendo tomado do fruto da terra nas mãos, nô-lo trouxeram, e nos informaram, dizendo: É terra boa a que Jeová nosso Deus nos está dando.26 Porém não quisestes subir, e fostes rebeldes à ordem de Jeová vosso Deus.27 Murmurastes nas vossas tendas e dissestes: Porque Jeová nos odiou, tirou-nos da terra do Egito, para nos entregar nas mãos dos amorreus, a fim de nos destruir.28 Para onde estamos nós subindo? nossos irmãos fizeram que se derretesse nosso coração, dizendo: O povo é maior e mais alto do que nós, as cidades são grandes e fortificadas até o céu. Também vimos ali os filhos dos anaquins.29 Então eu vos disse: Não tremais, nem tenhais medo deles.30 Jeová vosso Deus que vai adiante de vós, ele mesmo pelejará por vós, segundo tudo o que fez por vós no Egito, diante dos vossos olhos,31 e no deserto, em que vistes como Jeová vosso Deus vos levou, como um homem leva a seu filho, em todo o caminho por que andastes, até chegardes a este lugar.32 Apesar disso continuastes descrendo a Jeová vosso Deus,33 que foi adiante de vós no caminho, para vos procurar o lugar em que devíeis acampar, de noite no fogo, para vos mostrar o caminho, por onde devíeis andar, e de dia na nuvem.34 Tendo Jeová, pois, ouvido a voz das vossas palavras, indignou-se e jurou, dizendo:35 Certamente nenhum destes homens, esta geração perversa, verá a boa terra, que prometi com juramento dar a vossos pais,36 exceto Calebe, filho de Jefoné. Ele a verá; e a terra que pisou, dá-la-ei a ele, e a seus filhos, pois perseverou em seguir a Jeová.37 Também contra mim se irou Jeová por causa de vós, dizendo: Igualmente tu lá não entrarás.38 Josué, filho de Num, que te serve, entrará para ali; anima-o, porque ele fará que Israel a receba por herança.39 Vossos pequeninos de quem dissestes que seriam por presa, e vossos filhos, que hoje não têm conhecimento do bem nem do mal, esses lá entrarão, e a eles darei a terra, e a possuirão.40 Porém vós voltai, e parti para o deserto pelo caminho do mar Vermelho.41 Então me respondestes: Pecamos contra Jeová, nós subiremos e pelejaremos, de acordo com tudo o que Jeová nosso Deus nos ordenou. Vós vos armastes, cada um dos seus instrumentos de guerra, e vos mostrastes temerários subindo o monte.42 Disse-me Jeová: Dize-lhes: Não subais, nem pelejeis, porque não estou no meio de vós; para que não sejais feridos diante dos vossos inimigos.43 Assim vos falei, e não escutastes; antes rebelastes contra a ordem de Jeová, fostes presunçosos e subistes o monte.44 Os amorreus, que habitavam naquele monte, saíram ao vosso encontro, e vos perseguiram, como o fazem as abelhas, derrotando-vos em Seir, até Hormá.45 Tendo voltado, chorastes diante de Jeová; porém Jeová não vos ouviu a vós, nem inclinou os ouvidos a vós.46 Assim ficastes muitos dias em Cades, segundo os dias que ali ficastes.

1 These are the words, which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the plain wilderness, over against the Red Sea, between Pharan and Thophel and Laban and Haseroth, where there is very much gold:2 Eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Cadesbarne.3 In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:4 After that he had slain Sehon king of the Amorrhites, who dwelt in Hesebon: and Og king of Basan who abode in Astaroth, and in Edrai,6 l And you answered me: We have sinned against the Lord: we will go up and fight, as the Lord our God hath commanded. And when you went ready armed unto the mountain,7 Beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. And Moses began to expound the law, and to say:8 The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have stayed long enough in this mountain:9 Turn you, and come to the mountain of the Amorrhites, and to the other places that are next to it, the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south, and by the sea shore, the land of the Chanaanites, and of Libanus, as far as the great river Euphrates.10 Behold, said he, I have delivered it to you: go in and possess it, concerning which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them, and to their seed after them.11 And I said to you at that time:12 I alone am not able to bear you: for the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and you are this day as the stars of heaven, for multitude.13 (The Lord God of your fathers add to this number many thousands, and bless you as he hath spoken.)14 I alone am not able to bear your business, and the charge of you and your differences.15 Let me have from among you wise and understanding men, and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes, that I may appoint them your rulers.16 Then you answered me: The thing is good which thou meanest to do.17 And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.18 And I commanded them, saying: Hear them, and judge that which is just: whether he be one of your country, or a stranger.19 There shall be no difference of persons, you shall hear the little as well as the great: neither shall you respect any man's person, because it is the judgment of God. And if any thing seem hard to you, refer it to me, and I will hear it.20 And I commanded you all things that you were to do.21 And departing from Horeb, we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorrhite, as the Lord our God had commanded us. And when we were come into Cadesbarne,22 I said to you: You are come to the mountain of the Amorrhite, which the Lord our God will give to us.23 See the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord our God hath spoken to thy fathers: fear not, nor be any way discouraged.24 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go.25 And because the saying pleased me, I sent of you twelve men, one of every tribe:26 Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,27 Taking of the fruits thereof, to shew its fertility, they brought them to us, and said: The land is good, which the Lord our God will give us.28 And you would not go up, but being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,29 You murmured in your tents, and said: The Lord hateth us, and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and destroy us.30 Whither shall we go up? the messengers have terrified our hearts, saying: The multitude is very great, and taller than we: the cities are great, and walled up td the sky, we have seen the sons of the Enacims there.31 And I said to you: Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them:32 The Lord God, who is your leader, himself will fight for you, as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.33 And in the wilderness (as thou hast seen) the Lord thy God hath carried thee, as a man is wont to carry his little son, all the way that you have come, until you came to this place.34 And yet for all this you did not believe the Lord your God,35 Who went before you in the way, and marked out the place, wherein you should pitch your tents, in the night shewing you the way by fire, and in the day by the pillar of a cloud.36 And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, he was angry and swore, and said:37 Not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land, which I promised with an oath to your fathers:38 Except Caleb the son of Jephone: for he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath followed the Lord.39 Neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at, since the Lord was angry with me also on your account, and said: Neither shalt thou go in thither.40 But Josue the son of Nun, thy minister, he shall go in for thee: exhort and encourage him, and he shall divide the land by lot to Israel.41 Your children, of whom you said that they should be led away captives, and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil, they shall go in: and to them I will give the land, and they shall possess it.42 But return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.43 dummy verses inserted by amos44 The Lord said to me: Say to them: Go not up, and fight not, for I am not with you: lest you fall before your enemies.45 I spoke, and you hearkened not: but resisting the commandment of the Lord, and swelling with pride, you went up into the mountain.46 And the Amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out, and meeting you, chased you, as bees do: and made slaughter of you from Seir as far as Horma.47 And when you returned and wept before the Lord, he heard you not, neither would he yield to ;your voice.48 So you abode in Cadesbarne a long time.
