1 Quando Efraim falava, tremia-se; exaltou-se em Israel; mas quando se fez culpado no tocante a Baal, morreu.2 Agora pecam cada vez mais, e da sua prata tem feito para si imagens fundidas, a saber, ídolos segundo o seu entendimento, todos eles obra de artífices; deles dizem: Os homens que oferecem sacrifícios, beijem aos bezerros.3 Por isso serão como a nuvem da manhã, e como o orvalho que cedo passa, como o folhelho que o turbilhão lança da eira, e como o fumo duma chaminé.4 Contudo eu sou Jeová teu Deus desde a terra do Egito; tu não conhecerás outro deus fora de mim, e não há salvador senão eu.5 Eu te conheci no deserto, na terra de grande seca.6 Segundo o seu pasto, assim eles se fartaram; fartaram-se, e foi o seu coração exaltado; portanto se esqueceram de mim.7 Por isso sou para eles como um leão, como um leopardo espreitarei junto ao caminho;8 como uma ursa roubada dos seus cachorros lhes sairei ao encontro, e lhes rasgarei os muros do coração; ali os devorarei como um leão; as feras os despedaçarão.9 É a tua destruição, ó Israel, estares tu contra mim, contra o teu auxílio.10 Onde está agora o teu rei, para que te salve em todas as tuas cidades? onde estão os teus juízes, de quem disseste: Dá-me rei e príncipes?11 Dei-te um rei na minha ira, e tirei-o no meu furor.12 A iniqüidade de Efraim está atada; o seu pecado está depositado.13 Sobre ele virão as dores duma mulher que está de parto, ele é um filho insensato; pois é tempo dele não se demorar no lugar donde saem os filhos.14 Resgatá-los-ei do poder do Cheol; remi-los-ei da morte. Onde estão, ó morte, as tuas pragas? Onde está, ó Cheol, a tua destruição? o arrependimento será escondido dos meus olhos.15 Ainda que ele dê fruto entre seus irmãos, virá um vento oriental, vento de Jeová que sobe do deserto, e o seu manancial secará e a sua fonte será esgotada; ele saqueará o tesouro de todos os vasos preciosos.16 Samaria levará sobre si a sua culpa, porque se rebelou contra o seu Deus; cairão à espada; seus filhos serão despedaçados, e as suas mulheres grávidas serão fendidas.

1 When Ephraim spoke, a horror seized Israel: and he sinned in Baal and died.2 And now they have sinned more and more : and they have made to themselves a molten thing of their silver as the likeness of idols: the whole is the work of craftsmen: to these that say: Sacrifice men, ye that adore calves.3 Therefore they shall be as a morning aloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the dust that is driven with a whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.4 But I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt: and thou shalt know no God but me, and there is no saviour beside me.5 I knew thee in the desert, in the land of the wilderness.6 According to their pastures they were filled, and were made full: and they lifted up their heart, and have forgotten me.7 And I will be to them as a lioness, as a leopard in the way of the Assyrians.8 I will meet them as a bear that is robbed of her whelps, and I will rend the inner parts of their liver: and I will devour them there as a lion, the beast of the field shall tear them.9 Destruction is thy own, 0 Israel: thy help is only in me.10 Where is thy king? now especially let him save thee in all thy cities: and thy judges, of whom thou saidst: Q Give me kings and princes.11 I will give thee a king in my wrath, and will take him away in my indignation.12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up, his sin is hidden.13 The sorrows of a woman in labour snail come upon him, he is an unwise son: for now he shall not stand in the breach of the children.14 I will deliver them out of the hand of death. I will redeem them from death : O death, I will be thy death; O hell, I will be thy bite: comfort is hidden from my eyes.15 Because he shall make a separation between brothers: s the Lord will bring a burning wind that shall rise from the desert, and it shall dry up his springs, and shall make his fountain desolate, and he shall carry off the treasure of every desirable vessel.
