1 Digo a verdade em Cristo, não minto, dando testemunho comigo a minha consciência no Espírito Santo,2 que tenho grande tristeza e incessante dor no meu coração.3 Pois eu mesmo desejaria ser anátema, separado de Cristo, por amor de meus irmãos, meus compatriotas segundo a carne,4 os quais são israelitas; de quem é a adoção, a glória, as alianças, a promulgação da Lei, o culto de Deus e as promessas;5 de quem são os patriarcas, e de quem descende o Cristo segundo a carne, o qual é sobre todas as coisas, Deus bendito para sempre. Amém.6 Porém não é como se a palavra de Deus haja falhado. Pois nem todos os que são de Israel, são israelitas,7 nem por serem descendência de Abraão, são todos filhos, mas: Em Isaque será chamada a tua descendência.8 Isto é, não são filhos de Deus os filhos da carne, mas os filhos da promessa são considerados como descendência.9 A palavra da promessa é esta: Por este tempo virei, e Sara terá um filho.10 E não somente isso, mas também Rebeca, que havia concebido de um, de Isaque, nosso pai11 (porque não tendo os filhos gêmeos ainda nascido, nem tendo eles feito bem ou mal algum, para que o propósito de Deus segundo a eleição ficasse firme, não por causa das obras, mas daquele que chama),12 foi dito a ela: O mais velho servirá ao mais moço.13 Como está escrito: Eu amei a Jacó, porém aborreci a Esaú.14 Que diremos, pois? Há, porventura, em Deus injustiça? De modo nenhum.15 Pois a Moisés disse: Terei misericórdia de quem me aprouver ter misericórdia, e terei compaixão de quem me aprouver ter compaixão.16 Assim, pois, não é daquele que quer, nem daquele que corre, mas de Deus que usa de misericórdia.17 Pois disse a Escritura a Faraó: Para isto mesmo te levantei, para mostrar em ti o meu poder, e para que seja anunciado o meu nome por toda a terra.18 Logo ele tem misericórdia de quem quer, e a quem quer endurece.19 Dir-me-ás, então: Por que se queixa ele ainda? Pois quem resiste à sua vontade?20 Mas antes, ó homem, quem és tu que replicas a Deus? Porventura a coisa formada dirá a quem a formou: Por que me fizeste assim?21 Porventura não tem o oleiro poder sobre o barro para fazer da mesma massa um vaso para honra, e outro para desonra?22 Que diremos, se Deus, querendo mostrar a sua ira e dar a conhecer o seu poder, suportou com muita longanimidade os vasos de ira, preparados para a perdição,23 a fim de que também desse a conhecer as riquezas da sua glória sobre os vasos de misericórdia, que de antemão preparou para a glória,24 os quais somos nós, a quem ele também chamou não só dos judeus, mas também dos gentios?25 Como ele também disse em Oséias: Chamarei meu povo ao que não era meu povo, E amada à que não era amada;26 E no lugar em que se lhes disse: Vós não sois povo meu; Ali serão chamados filhos do Deus vivo.27 Isaías exclama a respeito de Israel: Ainda que o número dos filhos de Israel seja como a areia do mar, é somente o resto que será salvo.28 Pois o Senhor cumprirá a sua palavra sobre a terra, consumando-a e abreviando-a;29 como Isaías predisse: Se o Senhor dos exércitos não nos tivesse deixado descendência, Ter-nos-íamos tornado como Sodoma e tais como Gomorra.30 Que diremos, pois? Que os gentios que não buscavam a justiça, alcançaram a justiça, mas a justiça que vem da fé;31 porém que Israel, buscando uma lei da justiça, não chegou a esta lei.32 Por que? Porque não a buscavam pela fé, mas como que pelas obras. Tropeçaram na pedra de tropeço,33 como está escrito: Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra de tropeço e uma rocha de escândalo, Aquele que nele crê, não será envergonhado.

God forbid.15 For he saith to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy.16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.17 For the scripture saith to Pharao: To this purpose have I raised thee, that I may shew my power in thee, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.18 Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will; and whom he will, he hardeneth.19 Thou wilt say therefore to me: Why doth he then find fault? for who resisteth his will?20 O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus?21 Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction,23 That he might shew the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?24 Even us, whom also he hath called, nor only of the Jews, but also of the Gentiles.25 As in Osee he saith: I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved; and her that had not obtained mercy, one that hath obtained mercy.26 And it shall be, in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God.27 And Isaias crieth out concerning Israel: If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.28 For he shall finish his word, and cut it short in justice; because a short word shall the Lord make upon the earth.29 And as Isaias foretold: Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been made as Sodom, and we had been like unto Gomorrha.30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who followed not after justice, have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith.31 But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice.32 Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone.33 As it is written: Behold I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and a rock of scandal; and whosoever believeth in him shall not be confounded.
