1 Fiel é esta palavra: Se alguém aspira ao episcopado, deseja uma obra boa.2 É necessário, pois, que o bispo seja irrepreensível, esposo de uma só mulher, discreto, sóbrio, circunspecto, hospitaleiro, capaz de ensinar,3 não dado ao vinho, não espancador, mas moderado, inimigo de contendas, não cubiçoso,4 e que saiba governar bem a sua casa, tendo seus filhos em sujeição com todo o respeito5 (se um homem não sabe governar a sua casa, como cuidará da igreja de Deus?);6 não neófito, para que não suceda que, inchado de soberba, caia na condenação do Diabo.7 É necessário que ele tenha bom testemunho dos que são de fora, para que não caia no opróbrio e no laço do Diabo.8 Os diáconos sejam também sérios, não dobres em palavras, nem dados ao vinho nem amigos de sórdidas ganâncias,9 conservando o mistério da fé em uma consciência pura.10 Também estes sejam primeiro provados; depois exercitem o diaconato, se forem inculpáveis.11 As mulheres também devem ser sérias, não maldizentes, sóbrias, fiéis em tudo.12 Os diáconos devem ser esposos de uma só mulher, que governem bem a seus filhos e as suas casas.13 Pois os que houverem exercitado bem o seu diaconato, alcançarão para si um lugar honroso e muita confiança na fé que é em Jesus Cristo.14 Estas coisas te escrevo, ainda que espero em breve ir ter convosco;15 mas se eu tardar, para que saibas como se deve proceder na casa de Deus, a qual é a igreja do Deus vivo, coluna e apoio da verdade.16 Sem dúvida grande é o mistério da piedade; Aquele que se manifestou em carne, Foi justificado no espírito, Foi visto dos anjos, Pregado entre as nações, Crido no mundo E recebido na glória.

1 This saying is trustworthy: The one who would an elder be, A noble task desires he.2 Therefore, an elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, stable, sensible, respectable, a lover of strangers, and teachable.3 He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but instead be gentle. He must not be argumentative or a lover of money.4 He must manage his own family well and have children who are submissive and respectful in every way.5 For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?6 He must not be a recent convert, or he might become arrogant and fall into the condemnation of the devil.7 He must be well thought of by outsiders, lest he fall into disgrace and the trap set for him by the devil.8 Deacons, too, must be serious. They must not be two-faced, addicted to wine, or greedy for money.9 They must hold firmly to the secret of the faith with clear consciences.10 But they must first be tested. Then, if they prove to be blameless, they may become deacons.11 Their wives must also be serious. They must not be gossips, but instead be stable and trustworthy in everything.12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife and must manage their children and their families well.13 Those deacons who serve well gain an excellent reputation for themselves and will have great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.14 I hope to come to you soon. However, I'm writing this to you15 in case I am delayed so that you may know how one is to behave in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.16 By common confession, the secret of our godly worship is great: In flesh was he revealed to sight,Kept righteous by the Spirit's might,Adored by angels singing. To nations was he manifest,Believing souls found peace and rest,Our Lord in heaven reigning!
