1 Vieram ter com Jesus os fariseus e alguns escribas, chegados de Jerusalém.2 Tendo visto que alguns discípulos de Jesus comiam pão com mãos impuras, isto é, por lavar,3 (pois os fariseus e todos os judeus, observando a tradição dos anciãos,4 não comem sem lavar as mãos cuidadosamente; e quando voltam da rua, não comem sem se aspergir, e muitas outras coisas há que receberam e guardam, como a lavagem de copos, jarros e vasos de metal),5 perguntaram-lhe os fariseus e os escribas: Por que não seguem os teus discípulos a tradição dos anciãos, mas comem com mãos impuras?6 Respondeu ele: Hipócritas, bem profetizou de vós Isaías, como está escrito: Este povo honra-me com os lábios, Mas o seu coração está longe de mim;7 Adoram-me, porém, em vão, Ensinando doutrinas que são preceitos de homens.8 Vós, deixando o mandamento de Deus, observais a tradição dos homens.9 Continuou: Sabeis muito bem rejeitar o mandamento de Deus, para manter a vossa tradição.10 Pois Moisés disse: Honra a teu pai e a tua mãe, e: Quem maldisser a seu pai ou a sua mãe, seja morto;11 mas vós ensinais: Se um homem disser a seu pai ou a sua mãe: Aquilo que eu te poderia dar, é Corbã, isto é, uma oferenda a Deus;12 não mais lhe permitis fazer coisa alguma pelo pai ou pela mãe,13 invalidando a palavra de Deus pela tradição que vós mesmos transmitistes; e fazeis muitas outras coisas semelhantes.14 Chamando ele de novo a multidão, disse-lhe: Ouvi-me todos e entendei.15 Nada há fora do homem, que, nele entrando, possa contaminá-lo; pelo contrário as coisas que saem dele, são as que o contaminam.16 {Se alguém tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.}17 Tendo deixado a multidão, entrou em casa, e pediam-lhe seus discípulos a explicação da parábola.18 Ele respondeu: Assim também vós não entendeis? Não compreendeis que tudo o que está fora do homem, entrando nele, não pode contaminá-lo,19 porque não entra no coração, mas no ventre, e é lançado no lugar escuso? Isto disse, purificando todos os alimentos.20 Continuou: O que sai do homem, isso é o que o contamina.21 Pois de dentro, do coração dos homens, é que procedem os maus desígnios, as fornicações, os furtos, os homicídios, os adultérios,22 as avarezas, as malícias, o dolo, a lascívia, a inveja, a blasfêmia, a soberba e a loucura:23 todas estas más coisas procedem de dentro e contaminam o homem.24 Levantando-se, saiu dali para as fronteiras de Tiro. Entrando numa casa, quis que ninguém o soubesse, e não pôde ocultar-se.25 Uma mulher, porém, cuja filha estava possessa dum espírito imundo, ouvindo logo falar dele, foi e prostrou-se-lhe aos pés26 (a mulher era gentia, de origem siro-fenícia), e rogava-lhe que expelisse de sua filha o demônio.27 Ele lhe disse: Deixa primeiro que se fartem os filhos, porque não é bom tomar o pão dos filhos e lançá-lo aos cachorrinhos.28 Ela, porém, replicou: Assim é, Senhor; mas até os cachorrinhos debaixo da mesa comem as migalhas que as crianças deixam.29 Ele lhe disse: Por esta palavra, vai-te; o demônio já saiu de tua filha.30 Ela, voltando para sua casa, achou a menina deitada na cama, e que o demônio havia saído.31 De novo se retirou das fronteiras de Tiro, e foi por Sidom ao mar da Galiléia, atravessando o território de Decápolis.32 Trouxeram-lhe um surdo e gago e pediram-lhe que pusesse a mão sobre ele.33 Jesus, tirando-o da multidão, levou-o à parte, pôs os seus dedos nos ouvidos dele e, cuspindo, tocou-lhe a língua;34 depois erguendo os olhos ao céu, deu um suspiro e disse: Efrata, isto é, Abre-te.35 Abriram-se-lhe os ouvidos, e logo se lhe desfez a prisão da língua, e falava com clareza.36 Recomendou-lhes Jesus expressamente que a ninguém o contassem; mas quanto mais o recomendava, tanto mais eles o publicavam.37 Admiravam-se sobremaneira, dizendo: Ele tudo tem feito bem, faz até os surdos ouvir e os mudos falar.

1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus.2 They noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them.3 (For the Pharisees and indeed all the Jewish people don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders.4 They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.)5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands."6 He told them,"Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written,‘These people honor me with their lips,but their hearts are far from me.7 Their worship of me is empty,because they teach human rules as doctrines.’8 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."9 Then he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition!10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.’11 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me is Corban,"’(that is, an offering to God)12 you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.13 You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that."14 Then he called to the crowd again and said to them,"Listen to me, all of you, and understand!15 Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It is what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean.16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen!"17 When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable.18 He said to them,"Are you so ignorant? Don't you know that nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean?19 For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and is expelled as waste." (Thus he declared all foods clean.)20 He continued,"It is what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean.21 For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder,22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander,arrogance, and foolishness.23 All these things come from within and make a person unclean."24 Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house, not wanting anyone to know he was there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret.25 In fact, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell down at his feet.26 Now the woman happened to be a Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She kept asking him to drive the demon out of her daughter.27 But he kept telling her,"First let the children be filled. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."28 But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the puppies under the table eat some of the children's crumbs."29 Then he said to her,"Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter."30 So she went home and found the child lying in bed, and the demon was gone.31 Then Jesus left the territory of Tyre and passed through Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the territory of the Decapolis.32 Some people brought him a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. They begged him to lay his hand on him.33 Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. Putting his fingers into the man's ears, he touched his tongue with saliva.34 Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to him,"Ephphatha," that is,"Be opened!"35 At once the man's ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to talk normally.36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone, but the more he kept ordering them, the more they kept spreading the news.37 They were amazed beyond measure, saying, "He does everything well! He even makes deaf people hear and mute people talk!"
