1 Meus irmãos, não tenhais a fé em nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Senhor da glória, com respeitos humanos.2 Pois se entrar na vossa reunião algum homem que tem anel de ouro e com vestido esplêndido, e se entrar também um pobre com vestido sujo,3 e se tratardes com deferência ao que tem o vestido esplêndido e lhe disserdes: Senta-te aqui neste bom lugar, e disserdes ao pobre: Fica-te para ali em pé, ou senta-te abaixo do escabelo dos meus pés;4 não fazeis, porventura, distinções entre vós mesmos e não vos tornais juízes de maus pensamentos?5 Escutai, meus amados irmãos. Não escolheu Deus os pobres do mundo para fazê-los ricos na fé e herdeiros do reino que ele prometeu aos que o amam?6 Vós, porém, desprezastes o pobre. Não são os ricos os que vos oprimem e os que vos arrastam perante os tribunais?7 Não são eles os que blasfemam o bom Nome pelo qual sois chamados?8 Se vós, porém, cumpris a lei real segundo a Escritura: Amarás ao teu próximo como a ti mesmo, fazeis bem;9 mas se vos deixais levar de respeitos humanos, cometeis um pecado, sendo condenados pela Lei como transgressores.10 Pois quem guardar a Lei toda, porém tropeçar em um só ponto, tem-se tornado culpado de todos.11 O mesmo que disse: Não adulterarás, disse também: Não matarás. Ora se não cometes adultério, mas és homicida, te hás tornado transgressor da Lei.12 Falai de tal sorte, e de tal sorte procedei, como aqueles que hão de ser julgados pela lei da liberdade.13 Pois o juízo é sem misericórdia para aquele que não tem usado de misericórdia; a misericórdia triunfa do juízo.14 De que serve, meus irmãos, se alguém disser que tem fé se não tiver obras? acaso pode essa fé salvá-lo?15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã estiverem nus e necessitarem do pão quotidiano,16 e algum de vós lhes disser: Ide em paz, aquentai-vos e saciai-vos, e não lhes derdes o que é necessário para o corpo, que lhes aproveita?17 Assim também a fé, se não tiver obras, é morta em si mesma.18 Mas alguém dirá: Tu tens fé, e eu tenho obras; mostra-me a tua fé sem as obras, e eu te mostrarei a minha fé pelas minhas obras.19 Crês tu que Deus é um só? Fazes bem; os demônios também o crêem e estremecem.20 Mas queres saber, ó homem vão, que a fé sem as suas obras é estéril?21 Não foi pelas obras que Abraão, nosso pai, foi justificado quando ofereceu a seu filho Isaque sobre o altar?22 Vês que a fé cooperou com as suas obras e que pelas suas obras a fé foi consumada.23 e cumpriu-se o que diz a Escritura: E Abraão creu a Deus, e isto lhe foi imputado para justiça, e ele foi chamado amigo de Deus.24 Vedes que é pelas obras que o homem é justificado, e não somente pela fé.25 Do mesmo modo também não foi Raabe, a meretriz, justificada pelas obras, quando recebeu os espias, e os fez partir por outro caminho?26 Pois assim como o corpo sem espírito é morto, assim também a fé sem obras é morta.

1 My brothers, do not practice your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ by showing partiality.2 Suppose a man wearing gold rings and fine clothes comes into your assembly, and a poor man in dirty clothes also comes in.3 If you give special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Please take this seat," but you say to the poor man, "Stand over there" or "Sit on the floor at my feet,"4 you have made false distinctions among yourselves and have become judges with evil motives, haven't you?5 Listen, my dear brothers! God has chosen the poor in the world to become rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him, has he not?6 But you have humiliated the man who is poor. Are not rich people the ones who oppress you and drag you into court?7 Are not they the ones who blaspheme the excellent name by which you have been called?8 Nevertheless, you are doing the right thing if you obey the royal law in keeping with the Scripture, "You must love your neighbor as yourself."9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and will be convicted by the law as violators.10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point is guilty of breaking all of it.11 For the one who said, "Never commit adultery," also said, "Never murder." Now if you do not commit adultery but you murder, you become a violator of the law.12 You must make it your habit to speak and act like people who are going to be judged by the law of liberty.13 For merciless judgment will come to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.14 What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not have any works? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it?15 Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food16 and one of you tells them, "Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily." If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do?17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not have any works, is dead.18 But someone may say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without any works, and I will show you my faith by my works.19 You believe that there is one God. That's fine! Even the demons believe that and tremble with fear.20 Do you want proof, you foolish person, that faith without works is worthless?21 Our ancestor Abraham was justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar, wasn't he?22 You see that his faith was active with his works, and by his works faith was made complete.23 And so the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." And so he was called God's friend.24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.25 Likewise, Rahab the prostitute was justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them away on a different road, wasn't she?26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.
