1 O que era desde o princípio, o que temos ouvido, o que temos visto com os nossos olhos, o que contemplamos e o que as nossas mãos apalparam, a respeito do Verbo da vida2 (pois a vida se manifestou, e nós a temos visto, e testificamos dela, e vos anunciamos esta vida eterna que estava com o Pai e a nós se manifestou);3 o que temos visto e ouvido, também vo-lo anunciamos, para que vós também tenhais comunhão conosco. A nossa comunhão é com o Pai, e com seu Filho Jesus Cristo.4 Estas coisas vos escrevemos, para que o nosso gozo seja completo.5 A mensagem que dele temos ouvido e vos anunciamos é esta, que Deus é luz, e não há nele nenhumas trevas.6 Se dissermos que temos comunhão com ele e andarmos nas trevas, mentimos e não praticamos a verdade;7 se, porém, andarmos na luz, como ele está na luz, temos comunhão uns com os outros, e o sangue de Jesus seu Filho nos purifica de todo o pecado.8 Se dissermos que não cometemos pecado, a nós mesmos nos enganamos, e a verdade não está em nós.9 Se confessarmos os nossos pecados, ele é fiel e justo para nos perdoar os pecados, e para nos purificar de toda a injustiça.10 Se dissermos que não temos cometido pecado, fazemo-lo mentiroso, e a sua palavra não está em nós.

1 What existed from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we observed and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life!2 This life was revealed to us, and we have seen it and testify about it. We declare to you this eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.3 What we have seen and heard we declare to you so that you, too, can have fellowship with us. Now this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.4 We are writing these things so that our joy may be full.5 This is the message that we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness—none at all!6 If we claim that we have fellowship with him but keep living in the darkness, we are lying and the truth is not in us.7 But if we keep living in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.8 If we say that we do not have any sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.9 If we make it our habit to confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us those sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10 If we say that we have never sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.
