1 Não vos torneis muitos de vós mestres, meus irmãos, sabendo que receberemos um juízo mais severo.2 Pois todos nós tropeçamos em muitas coisas; se alguém não tropeça em sua palavra, é um homem perfeito, capaz de refrear também todo o seu corpo.3 Ora se pomos freios nas bocas dos cavalos para que nos obedeçam, também governamos todo o seu corpo.4 Vede também os navios, ainda que sejam grandes, e levados por impetuosos ventos, entretanto com um pequenino leme se voltam para onde quer o impulso do timoneiro.5 Assim a língua também é um pequeno membro, mas se gaba de grandes coisas. Vede como um pouco de fogo abrasa um grande bosque!6 E a língua é um fogo. Como um mundo de iniqüidade está colocada entre os nossos membros a língua que contamina o corpo todo, e incendeia o curso da vida, e é incendiada pelo fogo da geena.7 Pois toda a espécie de feras, e de aves, e de répteis, e de peixes se doma, e tem sido domada pela espécie humana,8 porém a língua, não há homem que a possa domar: é um mal irrequieto, está cheia de veneno mortífero.9 Com ela bendizemos ao Senhor e Pai, e com ela amaldiçoamos aos homens que foram criados à imagem de Deus:10 da mesma boca procede bênção e maldição. Não convém, meus irmãos, que isto assim seja.11 Porventura a fonte lança por uma mesma abertura água doce e água amargosa?12 Acaso, meus irmãos, pode uma figueira dar azeitonas, ou uma videira figos? Nem tão pouco pode uma fonte de água salgada dar água doce.13 Quem entre vós é sábio e instruído? Mostre por seu bom procedimento as suas obras em mansidão de sabedoria.14 Mas se tendes zelo amargo e o espírito de contenda nos vossos corações, não vos glorieis e não mintais contra a verdade.15 Esta sabedoria não é a sabedoria que vem de cima, mas é terrena, animal e diabólica;16 porque onde há zelo e espírito de contenda, ali também há confusão e toda a obra má.17 Mas a sabedoria que vem lá de cima é primeiramente pura, depois pacífica, moderada, fácil de se conciliar, cheia de misericórdia e de bons frutos, sem parcialidade, sem hipocrisia.18 Ora o fruto da justiça é semeado em paz para aqueles que são pacificadores.

1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more severely.2 For all of us make many mistakes. If someone does not make any mistakes when he speaks, he is perfect and able to control his whole body.3 Now if we put bits into horses’ mouths to make them obey us, we can guide their whole bodies as well.4 And look at ships! They are so big that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are steered wherever the pilot pleases by a tiny rudder.5 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it can boast of great achievements. A huge forest can be set on fire by a little flame.6 The tongue is a fire, a world of evil. Placed among the parts of our bodies, the tongue contaminates the whole body and sets on fire the course of life, and is itself set on fire by hell.7 For all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures can be or have been tamed by the human species,8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil filled with deadly poison.9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in God's likeness.10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. It should not be like this, my brothers!11 A spring cannot pour both fresh and brackish water from the same opening, can it?12 My brothers, a fig tree cannot produce olives, nor a grapevine figs, can it? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good life that his works are done in humility born of wisdom.14 But if you have bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop boasting and lying against the truth.15 That kind of wisdom does not come from above. No, it is worldly, self-centered, and demonic.16 For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.17 However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good fruits, and without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.18 And a harvest of righteousness is grown from the seed of peace planted by peacemakers.
