Paulo perante o rei Agripa

Então, Paulo, estendendo a mão, começou a defender-se: 2 Julgo-me feliz, ó rei Agripa, por ter de fazer hoje, perante ti, a minha defesa de tudo o que me acusam os judeus, 3 mormente porque és versado em todos os *cp.At 6.14;25.19;At 26.7costumes e questões que há entre eles; pelo que te rogo que me ouças com paciência. 4 *Gl 1.13s.;Fp 3.5Quanto à minha vida durante a mocidade, que passei desde o princípio entre o meu povo e em Jerusalém, sabem-na todos os judeus, 5 conhecendo-me desde o princípio (se quiserem dar disso testemunho), como vivi *At 23.6fariseu *At 22.3conforme a *At 15.5seita mais severa da nossa religião. 6 Agora, estou aqui para ser julgado *At 28.20; cp.24.15pela esperança da *At 13.32promessa feita por Deus a nossos pais, 7 a qual as *cp.Tg 1.1nossas doze tribos, servindo a Deus fervorosamente de noite e de dia, esperam alcançar; por causa dessa esperança, ó rei, sou *At 26.2acusado pelos judeus. 8 Por que é que se julga entre vós coisa incrível *cp.At 23.6ressuscitar Deus aos mortos? 9 Eu, *1Tm 1.13;Jo 16.2na verdade, entendia que devia fazer toda a oposição ao *cp.Jo 15.21nome de Jesus, o Nazareno; 10 e assim o *At 8.3;9.13fiz em Jerusalém. Tendo *cp.At 9.1s.recebido autoridade dos principais sacerdotes, eu não somente encarcerei muitos santos, como também *At 22.20dei o meu voto contra estes quando os matavam; 11 e, muitas vezes, *At 22.19;Mt 10.17castigando-os por todas as sinagogas, obrigava-os a blasfemar *At 9.1e, enfurecido cada vez mais contra eles, perseguia-os *At 22.5até nas cidades estrangeiras. 12 Nesse intuito, *At 26.12-18;At 9.3-8;22.6-11indo a Damasco com autoridade e comissão dos principais sarcedotes, 13 ao meio-dia, ó rei, vi no caminho uma luz do céu, mais brilhante que o sol, a qual resplandeceu em torno de mim e dos que iam comigo. 14 *cp.At 9.7Caindo nós por terra, ouvi uma voz que me dizia em *At 21.40língua hebraica: Saulo, Saulo, por que me persegues? Dura coisa te é recalcitrar contra os aguilhões. 15 Eu perguntei: Quem és, Senhor? Respondeu-me o Senhor: Eu sou Jesus, a quem tu persegues. 16 Mas levanta-te e *Ez 2.1;Dn 10.11fica em pé; pois para isso te apareci a fim de *At 22.14te constituir *Lc 1.2ministro e *At 22.15testemunha das coisas em que me viste e daquelas em que me hei de manifestar, 17 *Jr 1.8,19livrando-te *1Cr 16.35; cp.At 9.15do povo e dos gentios, aos quais eu te envio, 18 para lhes *Is 35.5;42.7,16;Ef 5.8;Cl 1.13;1Pe 2.9abrir os olhos, a fim de que se convertam das *Jo 1.5;Ef 5.8;Cl 1.12s.;1Ts 5.5;1Pe 2.9trevas à luz e, do poder de *Mt 4.10Satanás, a Deus, para que, *At 20.21pela fé em mim, recebam *Lc 24.47;At 2.38remissão de pecados e *At 20.32herança entre os santificados. 19 Por isso, ó rei Agripa, não fui desobediente à visão celestial, 20 mas anunciei primeiramente não só *At 9.19ss.aos de Damasco e em *At 9.26-29;22.17-20Jerusalém e por toda a terra da Judeia, como também *vd.At 13.46;9.15aos gentios, que *At 3.19se arrependessem e se convertessem a Deus, praticando obras *Mt 3.8;Lc 3.8dignas de seu arrependimento. 21 Por isso, alguns judeus *At 21.27,30me prenderam no templo e procuravam *At 21.31matar-me. 22 Tendo, pois, obtido socorro da parte de Deus, permaneço até hoje, *Lc 16.28dando testemunho tanto a pequenos como a grandes, nada dizendo senão o que os *At 10.43;24.14profetas e Moisés disseram haver de acontecer, 23 isto é, *cp.Mt 26.24;At 3.18haver de sofrer o Cristo e que seria *1Co 15.20,23;Cl 1.18;Ap 1.5ele o primeiro que, pela ressurreição dos mortos, havia de anunciar *Lc 2.32; cp.2Co 4.4a luz ao povo e aos gentios.

Paulo é interrompido por Festo

24 Aduzindo ele essas coisas em sua defesa, disse Festo em alta voz: Estás louco, Paulo! *Jo 7.15; cp.2Tm 3.15As muitas letras tiram-te o juízo. 25 Porém Paulo disse: Não estou louco, *At 23.26;24.3potentíssimo Festo, mas profiro palavras de verdade e de perfeito juízo. 26 Pois dessas coisas *cp.At 26.3tem conhecimento o rei, a quem falo também com franqueza, como persuadido estou de que nada disso lhe é oculto; porque isso não foi feito a um canto. 27 Crês, ó rei Agripa, os profetas? Eu sei que crês. 28 Agripa disse a Paulo: Com pouco me persuades a fazer-me *At 11.26cristão. 29 Paulo respondeu: Prouvera a Deus que com pouco ou com muito não somente tu, mas ainda todos os que hoje me ouvem se tornassem tais qual eu sou, menos estas *At 21.33cadeias.

Paulo teria sido solto, se não tivesse apelado para César

30 *At 25.23O rei levantou-se, e também o governador, e Berenice, e os que estavam sentados com eles; 31 e, havendo-se retirado, falavam uns com os outros, dizendo: *At 23.29Este homem nada tem feito que mereça morte ou prisão. 32 Agripa disse a Festo: Ele podia *At 28.18ser solto, se não tivesse *At 25.11apelado para César.

1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. 12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. 19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judæa, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. 25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. 26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. 28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. 29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds. 30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar.
