A vaidade de todas as coisas terrestres

Vaidade de vaidade, tudo é vaidade. 3 *Ec 2.11;3.9;5.16Que proveito tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho com que se fadiga debaixo do sol? 4 Uma geração vai-se, e outra geração vem, mas a *Sl 104.5;119.90terra permanece para sempre. 5 Nasce o *Sl 19.4-6sol e põe-se o sol, dirigindo-se arquejante para o lugar em que vai nascer. 6 *Ec 11.5O vento vai em direção do sul e volta para o norte; volve-se, e revolve-se na sua carreira, e retoma os seus circuitos. 7 Todos os rios correm para o mar, e o mar não se enche; ao lugar para onde correm os rios, para lá tornam eles a correr. 8 Tudo está cheio de cansaço, que ninguém pode exprimir; *Ec 4.8;Pv 27.20os olhos não se fartam de ver, nem os ouvidos se enchem de ouvir. 9 *Ec 2.12;3.15;6.10O que tem sido é o que há de ser; e o que se tem feito é o que se há de fazer; nada há que seja novo debaixo do sol. 10 Há alguma coisa de que se diz: Vê! Isto é novo? Ela já existiu nos séculos que foram antes de nós. 11 Não há *Ec 2.16;9.5memória das gerações passadas; nem as gerações futuras serão lembradas pelas que existirão depois delas.

12 Eu, o *Ec 1.1Pregador, fui rei de Israel em Jerusalém. 13 *Ec 1.17Apliquei o meu coração a inquirir e a *Ec 3.10-11;7.25;8.17investigar com sabedoria a respeito de tudo o que se faz debaixo do sol; duro *Ec 2.23,26;3.10trabalho que Deus deu aos filhos dos homens para nele se exercitarem. 14 Tenho visto todas as obras que se fazem debaixo do sol; eis que tudo é *Ec 2.11,17;4.4;6.9vaidade e desejo vão. 15 O que é *Ec 7.13torto não se pode endireitar; e o que falta não se pode enumerar. 16 Eu falei no meu coração, dizendo: Eis que eu me engrandeci e excedi em *Ec 2.9;1Rs 3.12;4.30;10.23sabedoria a todos os que antes de mim existiram em Jerusalém; o meu coração tem tido larga experiência da sabedoria e do conhecimento. 17 *Ec 1.13Apliquei o meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria e a ciência, a *Ec 2.12;7.25loucura e a estultícia; sei que também isso é desejo vão. 18 Pois na *Ec 2.23;12.12muita sabedoria há muito enfado; e quem aumenta a ciência aumenta a tristeza.

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. 5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.*1.5 hasteth: Heb. panteth 6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. 7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.*1.7 return…: Heb. return to go 8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. 11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.*1.13 to be…: or, to afflict them 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. 15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.*1.15 that which is wanting: Heb. defect 16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.*1.16 had…: Heb. had seen much 17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
