Os prazeres e as riquezas não produzem a felicidade

1 Eu disse no meu coração: Vamos! Eu te provarei pela *Ec 7.4;8.15alegria; sê, pois, feliz. Eis que isso também era vaidade. 2 *Ec 7.3,6;Pv 14.13Falando do riso, disse eu: É loucura! E da alegria: Que consegue ela? 3 Procurei no meu coração como *Ec 10.19;Jz 9.13;Sl 104.15estimular com vinho a minha carne, sem deixar de me guiar pela sabedoria, e como me apoderar da *Ec 7.25estultícia, até ver *Ec 2.24;3.12-13;5.18;6.12;8.15;12.13o que era bom que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu todos os dias da sua vida. 4 Empreendi grandes obras; *1Rs 7.1-12edifiquei para mim casas; plantei para mim *Ct 8.10-11vinhas; 5 fiz para mim *Ct 4.16;5.1jardins e *Ne 2.8quintas e neles plantei árvores frutíferas de todas as espécies; 6 fiz para mim *Ne 2.14;3.15-16depósitos de água, para deles regar o bosque em que cresciam as árvores. 7 Comprei servos e servas e tive servos *Gn 14.14;15.3que nasceram em minha casa; tive também grandes possessões de *1Rs 4.23gados e de rebanhos, mais do que todos os que antes de mim existiram em Jerusalém. 8 Amontoei para meu uso a prata, e *1Rs 9.28;10.10,14,21o ouro, e os tesouros *1Rs 4.21dos reis e *1Rs 20.14;Lm 1.1das províncias; provi-me de *2Sm 19.35cantores e cantoras e das delícias dos filhos dos homens, e concubinas em grande número. 9 Assim, me *Ec 1.16;1Cr 29.25engrandeci e me tornei mais rico do que todos os que antes de mim existiram em Jerusalém; perseverou também comigo a minha sabedoria. 10 De *Ec 6.2tudo quanto desejaram os meus olhos, não lhes privei; não neguei alegria alguma ao meu coração, pois o meu coração se pode alegrar de todo o meu trabalho; esta foi de todo o meu trabalho *Ec 3.22;5.18;9.9a minha porção. 11 Então, olhei eu para todas as obras que as minhas mãos haviam feito e para todo o trabalho que me tinha esforçado por fazer; eis que tudo era *Ec 2.22-23;1.14vaidade e desejo vão, não havendo *Ec 1.3;3.9;5.16proveito algum debaixo do sol.

12 Virei-me para *Ec 1.17contemplar a sabedoria, e a loucura, e a estultícia, porque, depois do rei, que pode fazer o homem? *Ec 1.9-10Somente o que já se fez. 13 Então, vi eu que *Ec 7.11-12,19;9.18;10.10a sabedoria é mais excelente do que a estultícia, quanto a luz é mais excelente do que as trevas. 14 Os olhos do sábio estão na sua cabeça, mas *Pv 17.24;1Jo 2.11o estulto anda em trevas; contudo, percebi eu que *Ec 3.19;6.6;7.2;9.2-3;Sl 49.10uma e a mesma coisa lhes sucede a ambos. 15 Disse eu no meu coração: *Ec 2.16Como sucede ao estulto, assim me sucede a mim; *Ec 6.8,11de que vale, pois, ser sábio? Então, disse eu, no meu coração, que também isso era vaidade. 16 Pois do sábio, bem como do estulto, *Ec 1.11;4.16;9.5a memória não durará para sempre, visto que nos dias vindouros tudo já se terá esquecido. *Ec 2.14Como se explica que o sábio morre assim como o estulto! 17 Assim *Ec 4.2aborreci a vida, porque me pareceu bem duro todo o trabalho que se faz debaixo do sol. Pois tudo é vaidade e desejo vão.

18 Aborreci *Ec 2.11;1.3todo o meu trabalho com que me tinha afadigado debaixo do sol, visto que tenho de *Sl 39.6;49.10deixá-lo a quem virá depois de mim. 19 Quem sabe se ele será sábio ou estulto? Contudo, ele terá domínio sobre todo o meu trabalho com que me afadiguei e em que mostrei a sabedoria debaixo do sol. Também isso é vaidade. 20 Pelo que tratei de fazer que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo o trabalho com que me tinha afadigado debaixo do sol. 21 Pois há homem que trabalha com sabedoria, com ciência e com *Ec 4.4destreza; contudo, *Ec 2.18deixará o seu trabalho para ser a porção de quem nele não trabalhou. Também isso é vaidade e grande mal. 22 Pois que alcança o homem com todo o seu trabalho e com a *Ec 1.14fadiga do seu coração, em que ele anda trabalhando debaixo do sol? 23 Pois todos os seus dias são *Ec 1.18;5.17;Jó 5.7;14.1dores, e o seu trabalho, vexação; até de noite não *Sl 127.2descansa o seu coração. Também isso é vaidade.

24 Não há *Ec 2.3;3.12-13,22;5.18;6.12;8.15;9.7;1Tm 6.17nada melhor para o homem do que comer, beber e fazer que a sua alma goze o bem do seu trabalho. Também eu vi que isso vem *Ec 3.13da mão de Deus. 25 Pois quem pode comer ou quem pode gozar mais do que eu? 26 Pois, ao homem que lhe agrada, *Jó 32.8;Pv 2.6Deus dá sabedoria, e ciência, e alegria; mas, *Jó 15.20ao pecador, dá trabalho para que ele ajunte e amontoe, *Jó 27.16-17;Pv 13.22a fim de dar àquele que agrada a Deus. Também isso é *Ec 1.14vaidade e desejo vão.

1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity. 2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it? 3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.*2.3 to give…: Heb. to draw my flesh with wine*2.3 all…: Heb. the number of the days of their life 4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards: 5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: 6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees: 7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:*2.7 servants born…: Heb. sons of my house 8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.*2.8 musical…: Heb. musical instrument and instruments 9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.*2.12 even…: or, in those things which have been already done 13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.*2.13 that…: Heb. that there is an excellency in wisdom more than in folly, etc 14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all. 15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.*2.15 happeneth even…: Heb. happeneth to me, even to me 16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.*2.18 taken: Heb. laboured 19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity. 20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun. 21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.*2.21 leave: Heb. give 22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? 23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.*2.24 should make…: or, delight his senses 25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I? 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God.
