A natureza da fé e exemplos de fé tirados do Velho Testamento

1 Ora, a fé é a *Hb 3.14(Gr.)substância das coisas *vd.Hb 3.6esperadas, a prova das *vd.Rm 8.24; cp.2Co 4.18;5.7;Hb 11.7,27coisas não vistas. 2 Pois foi por ela que *cp.Hb 1.1os antigos *Hb 11.4,39obtiveram bom testemunho. 3 É pela fé que entendemos que *Hb 1.2os mundos foram formados *Gn 1; cp.Hb 1.2pela *vd.Hb 6.5; cp.2Pe 3.5palavra de Deus, de modo que o visível *Rm 4.17não se tem feito das coisas que aparecem. 4 Pela fé, ofereceu *Gn 4.4;Mt 23.35;1Jo 3.12Abel a Deus mais excelente sacrifício que Caim, pelo qual *Hb 11.2-39alcançou testemunho de que era justo, dando Deus testemunho quanto a seus *Hb 5.1dons; e, por ela, *Gn 4.8-10;Hb 12.24estando ele morto, ainda fala. 5 Pela fé, foi trasladado *Gn 5.21-24Enoque para não *vd.Lc 2.26;Jo 8.51; cp.Hb 2.9ver a morte; e não foi achado, porque Deus o havia trasladado. Pois, antes da sua trasladação teve o testemunho de haver agradado a Deus. 6 Sem fé é impossível agradar a Deus; pois é necessário que o que *cp.Hb 7.19se chega a Deus creia que há Deus e que se mostra remunerador dos que o buscam. 7 Pela fé, *Gn 6.13-22Noé, *vd.Hb 8.5divinamente avisado a respeito das *vd.Hb 11.1coisas que ainda não se viam, *cp.Hb 5.7sendo temente a Deus, *1Pe 3.20construiu uma arca para o salvamento da sua casa, pela qual condenou ao mundo e tornou-se herdeiro da *cp.Gn 6.9;Ez 14.14,20;Rm 4.13;9.30justiça que é segundo a fé. 8 Pela fé, *Gn 12.1-4;At 7.2-4Abraão, quando chamado, obedeceu para sair em demanda de um lugar que havia de *Gn 12.7receber como herança; e saiu não sabendo para onde ia. 9 Pela fé, peregrinou na *At 7.5terra da promessa como em terra alheia, *Gn 12.18;13.3,18;18.1,9habitando em tendas com Isaque e Jacó, *cp.Hb 6.17herdeiros com ele da mesma promessa; 10 porque aguardava a *Hb 12.22;13.14cidade que tem os *Ap 21.14ss.fundamentos *Hb 11.16cujo arquiteto e edificador é Deus. 11 Pela fé, até a própria *Gn 17.19;18.11-14;21.2Sara recebeu o poder de conceber um filho ainda fora do tempo da idade, visto que ela teve por *vd.Hb 10.23fiel aquele que lho havia prometido. 12 Por isso, também de um, e *Rm 4.19este já amortecido, *Gn 15.5;22.17;32.12saiu uma posteridade tão numerosa como as estrelas do céu e inumerável como a areia que está à borda do mar.

13 *cp.Mt 13.17Na fé, morreram todos estes, *Hb 11.39sem terem alcançado as promessas, mas *cp.Jo 8.56;Hb 11.27tendo-as visto, e saudado de longe, e *Gn 23.4;47.9;Sl 39.12;Ef 2.19;1Pe 1.1;2.11confessado que eram estrangeiros e peregrinos sobre a terra. 14 Pois os que dizem tais coisas declaram que buscam uma pátria sua. 15 Se, na verdade, se tivessem recordado daquela donde saíram, *cp.Gn 24.6-8teriam tido oportunidade de voltar. 16 Mas, agora, aspiram a uma pátria melhor, isto é, a *cp.2Tm 4.18celestial. Por isso, *vd.Mc 8.38; cp.Hb 2.11Deus não se envergonha deles, de *Gn 26.24;28.13;Êx 3.6,15;4.5se chamar Deus deles, pois *Hb 11.10; cp.Ap 21.2lhes preparou uma cidade.

17 Pela fé, *Gn 22.1-10;Tg 2.21Abraão, sendo provado, ofereceu Isaque; sim, aquele que tinha *cp.Hb 11.13recebido com alegria as promessas ia oferecendo seu filho unigênito, 18 a quem se havia dito: *Rm 9.7;Gn 21.12Em Isaque, será chamada a tua descendência, 19 julgando que *cp.Rm 4.21Deus o podia ressuscitar até dentre os mortos; donde também, em *cp.Hb 9.9figura, o recobrou. 20 Pela fé, *Gn 27.27-29;39s.Isaque abençoou a Jacó e a Esaú mesmo acerca das coisas futuras. 21 Pela fé, *Gn 48.1,5,16,20Jacó, quando estava para morrer, abençoou a cada um dos filhos de José e *Gn 47.31(LXX); cp.1Rs 1.47adorou inclinado sobre a extremidade do seu bordão. 22 Pela fé, *Gn 50.24s.; cp.Êx 13.19José, estando próximo o seu fim, fez menção da saída dos filhos de Israel e deu ordem a respeito de seus ossos. 23 Pela fé, *Êx 2.2(cp. LXX)Moisés, depois de nascido, foi ocultado três meses por seus pais, porque viram que era menino formoso e não temeram *Êx 1.16,22o edito do rei. 24 Pela fé, Moisés, *Êx 2.10-11ss.quando homem, recusou ser chamado filho da filha de faraó, 25 escolhendo, antes, *cp.Hb 11.37ser maltratado com o povo de Deus do que ter o gozo do pecado por algum tempo, 26 *cp.Lc 14.33;Fp 3.7s.tendo por maiores riquezas o opróbrio de Cristo do que os tesouros do Egito, pois olhava para *vd.Hb 2.2a recompensa. 27 Pela fé, *Êx 12.50s.;13.17s.; cp.Êx 2.15deixou ele o Egito, não *Êx 10.28s.; cp.Êx 2.14temendo a ira do rei; porque ficou firme como quem *cp.Hb 11.1,13; vd.Cl 1.15vê aquele que é invisível. 28 Pela fé, *Êx 12.21ss.celebrou a Páscoa e a aspersão do sangue, para que o *Êx 12.23,29s.; cp.1Co 10.10destruidor dos primogênitos não os tocasse. 29 Pela fé, *Êx 14.22-29atravessaram os israelitas o mar Vermelho como por terra seca; e, tentando isso os egípcios, foram afogados. 30 Pela fé, caíram *Js 6.20os muros de Jericó, *Js 6.15s.depois de rodeados por sete dias. 31 Pela fé, não foi destruída a meretriz *Js 2.9ss.;6.23;Tg 2.25Raabe com os desobedientes, tendo recebido os espias com paz.

32 E que mais direi ainda? Porque o tempo me faltará, se eu falar de *Jz 6—8Gideão, de *Jz 4—5Baraque, de *Jz 13—16Sansão, de *Jz 11—12Jefté, de *1Sm 16.1,13Davi, de *1Sm 1.20Samuel e dos profetas, 33 que, pela fé, *cp.Jz 4;7;11;14;2Sm 5.17;8.2;10.12venceram reinos, *cp.1Sm 12.4;2Sm 8.15praticaram a justiça, *cp.2Sm 7.1s.alcançaram as promessas, *Dn 6.22; cp.Jz 14.6;1Sm 17.34taparam as bocas dos leões, 34 *Dn 3.23ss.extinguiram a violência do fogo, *Êx 18.4;1Sm 18.11;19.10;Sl 144.10;1Rs 19;2Rs 6evitaram o fio da espada, de fracos tornaram-se fortes, *cp.Jz 7.21;15.8,15s.;1Sm 17.51s.;2Sm 8.1-6;10.15ss.fizeram-se poderosos na guerra, puseram em fugida os exércitos de estrangeiros. 35 *1Rs 17.23;2Rs 4.36s.As mulheres receberam pela ressurreição os seus mortos; uns foram torturados, não aceitando o seu livramento para alcançarem melhor ressurreição; 36 e outros experimentaram escárnios, açoites e ainda *Gn 39.20;Jr 20.2;37.15grilhões e prisão; 37 eles foram *2Cr 24.21; cp.1Rs 21.13apedrejados, provados, *cp.2Sm 12.31;1Cr 20.3serrados pelo meio, *1Rs 19.10;Jr 26.23mortos ao fio da espada; eles andaram errantes, *cp.1Rs 19.13,19;2Rs 2.8,13s.;Zc 13.4vestidos de peles de ovelhas e de cabras, necessitados, aflitos, *cp.Hb 11.25;Hb 13.3maltratados, 38 uns homens (de quem o mundo não era digno) *cp.1Rs 18.4;13;19.9errantes nos desertos, nos montes, nas covas e nas cavernas da terra. 39 Todos estes, *vd.Hb 11.2tendo alcançado bom testemunho pela sua fé, contudo, *Hb 11.13;Hb 10.36não alcançaram a promessa, 40 tendo Deus provido *cp.Hb 11.16alguma coisa melhor no tocante a nós, para que eles, *cp.Ap 6.11sem nós, não fossem aperfeiçoados.

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. 31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. 32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: 33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
