A queda de Babilônia

A futilidade da confiança própria

8 Agora, pois, ouve isso, tu, a que estás *Is 22.13;32.9;Jr 50.11entregue a prazeres, *Is 32.9,11;Sf 2.15que habitas descuidada e que dizes no teu coração: *Is 47.10;45.5-6,18;Sf 2.15Eu sou, e fora de mim não há outra; *Ap 18.7não me sentarei como viúva, nem conhecerei a perda de filhos. 9 Porém, *Sl 73.19;1Ts 5.3;Ap 18.8,10num momento, num só dia, virão sobre ti ambos *Is 13.16,18;14.22esses males: a perda de filhos e a viuvez — em toda a sua plenitude virão sobre ti apesar da multidão das *Is 47.13;Na 3.4;Ap 18.23tuas feitiçarias e da grande abundância dos teus encantamentos. 10 *Is 59.4;Sl 52.7;62.10Pois confiaste na tua maldade; disseste: *Is 29.15;Ez 8.12;9.9Ninguém me vê. *Is 5.21;44.20A tua sabedoria e a tua ciência, essas te perverteram. 12 Deixa-te estar com os teus *Is 47.9encantamentos e com a multidão das tuas feitiçarias, em que tens trabalhado desde a tua mocidade, para ver se, acaso, podes tirar algum proveito, se, acaso, podes prevalecer. 13 Tens-te *Jr 51.58,64cansado na multidão dos teus conselhos; apresentem-se, pois, e *Is 47.15te salvem os teus *Is 47.9;8.19;44.25;Dn 2.2,10astrólogos, os que contemplam os astros, os que te anunciam de lua nova em lua nova o que há de vir sobre ti. 14 Eis que se tornarão como o *Is 5.24;Na 1.10;Ml 4.1restolho; *Is 10.17;Jr 51.30,32,58o fogo os queimará, e eles não se poderão livrar do poder das chamas. Essas chamas não serão *Is 44.16umas brasas a que se aquentem, nem fogo, para que diante dele se assentem. 15 Assim te virão a parar as coisas em que tens trabalhado; os que tiveram *Ap 18.11negócios contigo desde a tua mocidade andarão errantes, cada um para o seu lugar; não haverá *Is 5.29;43.13;46.7quem te salve.

1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. 2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. 3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. 4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. 5 Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

7 And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. 8 Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: 9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.*47.10 perverted…: or, caused thee to turn away

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.*47.11 from…: Heb. the morning thereof*47.11 put: Heb. expiate 12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels.
