O dom de profecia é superior ao dom de línguas

1 *1Co 16.14Segui a caridade; contudo, *1Co 12.31;1Co 14.39aspirai aos *1Co 12.1dons espirituais, porém, sobre todos, ao de *1Co 13.2profecia. 2 O que *1Co 12.10,28,30;13.1;1Co 14.18-19,26s.; cp.Mc 16.17fala em língua não fala a homens, senão a Deus; pois ninguém o entende, mas em espírito fala *1Co 13.2mistérios. 3 Porém aquele que profetiza fala a homens para *1Co 14.5,12,17,26;Rm 14.19edificação, *At 4.36exortação e consolação. 4 Aquele que fala em língua edifica-se a si mesmo; mas o que *1Co 13.2profetiza edifica a igreja. 5 Quero que todos vós faleis em línguas, mas, *Nm 11.29antes, que profetizeis; maior é aquele que profetiza do que aquele que fala em línguas, a não ser que as interprete, para que a igreja receba edificação. 6 Agora, porém, irmãos, se eu for ter convosco, falando em línguas, de que vos aproveitarei, se não vos falar por meio de *1Co 14.26;Ef 1.17revelação, ou de *1Co 12.8ciência, ou de profecia, ou de *1Co 14.26; cp.At 2.42;Rm 6.17instrução? 7 Até as coisas inanimadas, quando emitem som, quer flauta quer cítara, se não fizerem diferença de sons, como se conhecerá o que se toca na flauta ou na cítara? 8 Porque, *cp.Nm 10.9;Jr 4.19;Ez 33.3-6;Jl 2.1se a trombeta der um som incerto, quem se preparará para a batalha? 9 Assim também vós, se pela língua não proferirdes discurso fácil de se entender, como se conhecerá o que se fala? Pois estareis *cp.1Co 9.26falando ao ar. 10 Há, como acontece, tantas espécies de vozes no mundo, e nenhuma há sem significação. 11 Se, portanto, eu não souber a significação da voz, serei um estrangeiro para aquele que fala; e aquele que fala será um estrangeiro para mim. 12 Assim também vós, desde que estais desejosos de dons espirituais, procurai abundar neles, para a edificação da igreja. 13 Por isso, quem fala em língua, ore para que a interprete. 14 Pois, se eu orar em língua, o meu espírito ora, mas o meu entendimento não dá fruto. 15 *1Co 14.26; cp.At 21.22Que farei, então? Orarei com o espírito e orarei também com o entendimento; *cp.Ef 5.19;Cl 3.16cantarei salmos com o espírito e cantarei também com o entendimento. 16 De outra forma, se bendisseres com o espírito, como dirá o *cp.Dt 27.15-26;1Cr 16.36;Sl 106.48;Ne 5.13;8.6;Jr 11.5;28.6amém às tuas *Mt 15.36ações de graças aquele que ocupa o lugar de indouto, visto que não sabe o que dizes? 17 Tu, na verdade, dás bem as graças, mas o outro não é *1Co 14.4-5,12,26;Rm 14.19edificado. 18 Dou graças a Deus que falo em línguas mais que todos vós; 19 mas, na igreja, eu, antes, quero falar cinco palavras com o meu entendimento, para que instrua também a outros, do que dez mil palavras em língua.

20 *Rm 1.13Irmãos, *Ef 4.14; cp.Hb 5.12s.não vos torneis meninos no juízo. Na malícia, contudo, *cp.Sl 131.2;Rm 16.19;1Pe 2.2;Mt 18.3sede crianças; mas no juízo tornai-vos homens feitos. 21 *Jo 10.34; cp.1Co 14.34;Is 28.11s.Na Lei está escrito: Por homens de outras línguas e por lábios de estrangeiros, falarei a este povo, e nem assim me ouvirá, diz o Senhor. 22 Assim línguas são para sinal, não aos que creem, mas aos incrédulos; *1Co 14.1a profecia, porém, não aos incrédulos, mas aos que creem. 23 Se, portanto, a igreja inteira se reunir num mesmo lugar, e todos falarem em línguas, e entrarem indoutos ou incrédulos, não dirão que *cp.At 2.13estais loucos? 24 Se, porém, todos profetizarem, e entrar algum incrédulo ou indouto, por todos é *Jo 16.8convencido, por todos é julgado. 25 Os *cp.Jo 4.19segredos do seu coração se tornam manifestos; e, assim, *Lc 17.16caindo com o rosto em terra, adorará a Deus, *Is 45.14;Lc 8.23; cp.Dn 2.47;At 4.13declarando que realmente Deus está entre vós.

A necessidade de ordem no culto

26 *1Co 14.15Que farei, pois, *Rm 1.13irmãos? Quando vos congregais, *cp.1Co 12.8-10cada um tem *Ef 5.19salmo, tem *1Co 14.6ensino, tem revelação, tem *1Co 14.2língua, tem *1Co 14.5,13,27s.; vd.1Co 12.10interpretação. Que *Rm 14.19tudo se faça para edificação. 27 Se alguém falar em língua, não falem senão dois ou, quando muito, três, e cada um por sua vez; haja um que interprete; 28 mas, se não houver intérprete, esteja calado na igreja e fale consigo e com Deus. 29 Falem *cp.1Co 14.32,37; vd.1Co 13.2os profetas, dois ou três, e os outros *cp.1Co 12.10julguem. 30 Se for dada alguma revelação a outrem que estiver sentado, cale-se o primeiro. 31 Pois todos, um após outro, podeis profetizar, para que todos aprendam e todos sejam exortados. 32 Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos profetas, 33 porque Deus não é Deus de *cp.1Co 14.40confusão, mas de paz.

Como em *cp.1Co 4.17; vd.7.17todas as igrejas dos *At 9.13santos, 34 as mulheres *cp.1Co 11.5,13estejam caladas nas igrejas, pois não lhes é permitido falar; *cp.1Tm 2.11s.;1Pe 3.1mas estejam em sujeição, como também diz *cp.1Co 14.21;Gn 3.16(?)a Lei. 35 Se, porém, querem aprender alguma coisa, perguntem-na em casa a seus maridos porque é vergonhoso para uma mulher o falar na igreja. 36 Porventura, saiu de vós a palavra de Deus ou não veio ela senão para vós?

37 *cp.2Co 10.7Se alguém se considera profeta ou *1Co 2.15espiritual, reconheça que as coisas que vos escrevo *cp.1Co 7.40;1Jo 4.6são mandamentos do Senhor; 38 mas, se alguém desconhece, é ele desconhecido.

39 Assim, meus irmãos, *1Co 12.31aspirai *1Co 14.1; vd.13.2a profetizar e não proibais o falar em línguas. 40 Mas *1Co 14.33faça-se tudo com decência e ordem.

1 Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands, but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation. 4 He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. 5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.

6 But now, brothers,*14:6 The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? 7 Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war? 9 So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I don’t know the meaning of the language, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.

13 Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What should I do? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say? 17 For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up. 18 I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all. 19 However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.

20 Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature. 21 In the law it is written, "By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. They won’t even listen to me that way, says the Lord."✝14:21 Isaiah 28:11-12 22 Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe. 23 If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy? 24 But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all. 25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

26 What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up. 27 If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern. 30 But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted. 32 The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, 33 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints. 34 Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,✝14:34 Deuteronomy 27:9 35 if they desire to learn anything. "Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly." 36 What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?

37 If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. 38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
