Barnabé e Saulo. A primeira viagem missionária

Elimas, o mago

4 Eles, pois, *At 13.2s.enviados pelo Espírito Santo, desceram a Selêucia, e dali navegaram para *At 4.36Chipre, 5 e, chegados a Salamina, anunciavam a palavra de Deus nas *At 9.20;At 13.14sinagogas dos judeus; e também tinham *At 12.12João como ajudante. 6 Havendo atravessado toda a ilha até Pafos, acharam um judeu chamado Barjesus, *cp.At 8.9mago, *Mt 7.15falso profeta, 7 que estava com *At 13.8,12;At 18.12;19.38o procônsul Sérgio Paulo, varão sensato. Este, tendo chamado a Barnabé e a Saulo, mostrou desejo de ouvir a palavra de Deus. 8 Mas Elimas, o mago (porque assim se interpreta o seu nome), opunha-se-lhes, procurando desviar *At 6.7da fé o procônsul. 9 Mas Saulo, também chamado Paulo, *At 4.8; vd.2.4cheio do Espírito de Deus, fixando nele os olhos, 10 disse: Ó *Mt 13.38; cp.Jo 8.44filho do Diabo, cheio de todo o engano e de toda a malícia, inimigo de toda a justiça, não cessarás tu de perverter *Os 14.9; cp.2Pe 2.15os caminhos retos do Senhor? 11 Agora, eis *Êx 9.3;1Sm 5.6s.;Sl 32.4; cp.Jó 19.21;Hb 10.31a mão do Senhor sobre ti, e ficarás cego, não vendo o sol por algum tempo. No mesmo instante, caiu sobre ele uma névoa e trevas, e, andando à roda, procurava quem o guiasse pela mão. 12 Então, o procônsul, vendo o que havia acontecido, creu, maravilhando-se *cp.At 13.49;At 8.25;15.35s.;19.10,20da doutrina do Senhor.

João volta a Jerusalém

13 Tendo Paulo e seus companheiros navegado de *At 13.6Pafos, foram a *At 14.25Perge na *At 2.10;14.24;15.38;27.5Panfília; João, porém, apartando-se deles, voltou a Jerusalém. 14 Mas eles, passando de Perge, foram a *At 14.19,21;2Tm 3.11Antioquia da *At 14.24Pisídia e, entrando na *At 9.20;At 13.5sinagoga *At 13.42,44;At 16.13;18.4; cp.17.2no dia de sábado, sentaram-se. 15 Depois da *At 15.21; cp.2Co 3.14s.leitura da lei e *At 13.27dos profetas, *Mc 5.22os chefes da sinagoga mandaram-lhes dizer: Irmãos, se tendes alguma palavra de exortação ao povo, dizei-a. 16 Paulo, levantando-se e *At 12.17acenando com a mão, disse:

Israelitas *cp.At 10.2;At 13.26e vós que temeis a Deus, ouvi: 17 O Deus deste povo de Israel *Dt 7.6-8;Êx 6.1,6;13.14,16;At 7.17ss.escolheu nossos pais, e exaltou a este povo no tempo em que habitou a terra do Egito, donde os tirou com braço excelso, 18 e suportou-lhes os maus costumes *Dt 1.31;Dt 9.7no deserto por espaço de quase *At 7.36quarenta anos; 19 *At 7.45e, havendo destruído *Dt 7.1sete nações na terra de Canaã, *Js 19.51;Sl 78.55deu-lhes esta terra por herança *cp.Jz 11.26;1Rs 6.1durante cerca de quatrocentos e cinquenta anos. 20 Depois disso, *Jz 2.16deu-lhes juízes, até *At 3.24o profeta Samuel. 21 Em seguida, eles *1Sm 8.5pediram rei, e Deus por quarenta anos lhes deu a *1Sm 10.1;9.1s.Saul, filho de Quis, da tribo de Benjamim; 22 e, *1Sm 15.23,26,28;16.1,13tendo deposto a este, elevou-lhes Davi como rei, ao qual também, dando testemunho, disse: *cp.At 7.46;1Sm 13.14;Sl 89.20Achei a Davi, filho de Jessé, homem segundo o meu coração, e ele fará todas as minhas vontades. 23 *Mt 1.1Da descendência deste, *cp.At 13.32s.conforme a promessa, trouxe Deus a Israel um *Lc 2.11;Jo 4.42Salvador, que é Jesus, 24 havendo *Mc 1.1-4; cp.At 1.22;19.4João primeiro pregado, antes da vinda dele, o batismo de arrependimento a todo o povo de Israel. 25 Quando João *At 20.24completava a sua carreira, *Jo 1.20,27; cp.Mt 3.11;Mc 1.7;Lc 3.16dizia: Eu não sou o que vós supondes; mas após mim vem aquele de cujos pés não sou digno de desatar as sandálias. 26 Irmãos, descendência de Abraão, e os que entre vós temem a Deus, a nós foi enviada a palavra *At 28.28; cp.5.20;4.12;At 13.46;Jo 6.68dessa salvação. 27 Pois os que habitavam em Jerusalém e os *Lc 23.13seus magistrados, *At 3.17não conhecendo a Jesus nem os ensinos *Lc 24.27dos profetas que *At 13.15se leem cada sábado, condenando-o, cumpriram as profecias; 28 e, se bem que não achassem causa alguma de morte, *At 3.14pediram a Pilatos que o fizesse morrer. 29 Quando tinham *cp.At 26.22cumprido tudo o que dele estava escrito, *cp.Lc 23.53tirando-o do *At 5.30madeiro, puseram-no em um túmulo. 30 Mas Deus *At 13.33-34,37;At 2.24o ressuscitou dentre os mortos; 31 e ele foi visto muitos dias por aqueles que com ele subiram da *At 1.11Galileia a Jerusalém, os quais agora são *Lc 24.48as suas testemunhas para com o povo. 32 *At 5.42;14.15Nós vos anunciamos as boas-novas *At 26.6; cp.At 13.23;Rm 1.2;4.13;9.4da promessa feita a nossos pais, 33 como Deus a cumpriu plenamente a nossos filhos, suscitando a Jesus, como também está escrito no Salmo segundo: *Sl 2.7Tu és meu Filho, eu, hoje, te gerei. 34 Que o ressuscitou dentre os mortos para nunca mais tornar à corrupção, ele o disse desta maneira: *Is 55.3Dar-vos-ei as santas e firmes coisas prometidas a Davi. 35 Por isso, também diz em outro Salmo: *At 2.27;Sl 16.10Não permitirás que o teu Santo experimente corrupção. 36 Na verdade, tendo *At 2.29Davi no seu tempo servido ao *cp.At 13.22;20.27conselho de Deus, *At 8.1;1Rs 2.10adormeceu e foi reunido a seus pais e experimentou corrupção; 37 porém aquele que Deus *At 13.33-34;At 2.24ressuscitou dentre os mortos não experimentou corrupção. 38 Seja-vos, pois, notório, irmãos, que *Lc 24.47; cp.At 2.38por este se vos anuncia remissão de pecados; 39 e de tudo aquilo de que não pudestes ser justificados pela Lei de Moisés, por este *Rm 3.28;10.4;At 10.43é justificado todo o que crê. 40 Guardai-vos, pois, de que não venha sobre vós o que foi dito *Hc 1.5;Jo 6.45; cp.At 7.42;Lc 24.44nos profetas:

41 Vede, ó desprezadores, maravilhai-vos e desaparecei,

porque eu faço uma obra nos vossos dias,

obra que de modo algum crereis, ainda que alguém vo-la refira.

Rogados a pregar no próximo sábado

42 Ao saírem eles, rogaram-lhes que no *At 13.14 próximo sábado se lhes repetissem essas palavras. 43 Despedida a sinagoga, muitos judeus e *Mt 23.15prosélitos *At 13.50;At 17.4,17; cp.16.14;18.7devotos seguiram a Paulo e Barnabé, e estes, falando-lhes, persuadiram-nos a perseverar *At 11.23na graça de Deus.

Paulo e Barnabé vão para os gentios

44 No *At 13.14sábado seguinte, reuniu-se quase a cidade toda para ouvir a palavra de Deus. 45 Mas *At 13.50;At 14.2,4,5,19;1Ts 2.16os judeus, vendo a multidão, encheram-se de inveja e, blasfemando, contradiziam o que Paulo falava. 46 Paulo e Barnabé, falando ousadamente, disseram: Era a vós que se devia *At 3.26; cp.At 13.5,14;At 9.20falar primeiramente a palavra de Deus; mas, visto que a rejeitais e vos julgais indignos da vida eterna, eis que nos *At 18.6;22.21;26.20;28.28; cp.19.9;9.15viramos para os gentios. 47 Pois assim no-lo ordenou o Senhor:

*Lc 2.32;Is 49.6Eu te tenho posto para luz dos gentios,

a fim de que sejas para salvação até os confins da terra.

48 Os gentios, ouvindo isso, regozijavam-se e glorificavam *cp.At 13.12a palavra do Senhor, e creram todos os que estavam *Rm 8.28ss.;Ef 1.4-5,11destinados para a vida eterna. 49 E divulgava-se a palavra do Senhor por toda aquela região. 50 Mas *At 13.45;At 14.2,4,5,19;1Ts 2.16os judeus instigaram *At 13.43;At 17.4,17; cp.16.14;18.7as mulheres devotas de *Mc 15.43alta posição e os principais da cidade, e excitaram uma perseguição contra Paulo e Barnabé, e expulsaram-nos do seu território. 51 *Mt 10.14; cp.At 18.6Mas, havendo estes sacudido contra aqueles o pó de seus pés, foram a *At 14.1,19,21;16.2;2Tm 3.11Icônio, 52 e os discípulos estavam *cp.At 2.4cheios de gozo e do Espírito Santo.

1 Now in the assembly that was at Antioch there were some prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Separate Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them."

3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia. From there they sailed to Cyprus. 5 When they were at Salamis, they proclaimed God’s word in the Jewish synagogues. They also had John as their attendant. 6 When they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him 10 and said, "You son of the devil, full of all deceit and all cunning, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is on you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun for a season!"

Immediately a mist and darkness fell on him. He went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But they, passing on from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia. They went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. 15 After the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, speak."

16 Paul stood up, and gesturing with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen. 17 The God of this people*13:17 TR, NU add "Israel" chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they stayed as aliens in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm, he led them out of it. 18 For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. 19 When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land for an inheritance for about four hundred fifty years. 20 After these things, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 Afterward they asked for a king, and God gave to them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 When he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, to whom he also testified, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ 23 From this man’s offspring, God has brought salvation*13:23 TR, NU read "a Savior, Jesus" instead of "salvation" to Israel according to his promise, 24 before his coming, when John had first preached the baptism of repentance to Israel.*13:24 TR, NU read "to all the people of Israel" instead of "to Israel" 25 As John was fulfilling his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. But behold, one comes after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 "Brothers, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, the word of this salvation is sent out to you. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they didn’t know him, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. 28 Though they found no cause for death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 When they had fulfilled all things that were written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and he was seen for many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people. 32 We bring you good news of the promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this to us, their children, in that he raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second psalm,

‘You are my Son.

Today I have become your father.’✝13:33 Psalms 2:7

34 "Concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he has spoken thus: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’✝13:34 Isaiah 55:3 35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see decay.’✝13:35 Psalms 16:10 36 For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, was laid with his fathers, and saw decay. 37 But he whom God raised up saw no decay. 38 Be it known to you therefore, brothers,*13:38 The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." that through this man is proclaimed to you remission of sins; 39 and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest that come on you which is spoken in the prophets:

41 ‘Behold, you scoffers!

Wonder and perish,

for I work a work in your days,

a work which you will in no way believe, if one declares it to you.’"✝13:41 Habakkuk 1:5

42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

44 The next Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.

46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, "It was necessary that God’s word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from yourselves, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so has the Lord commanded us, saying,

‘I have set you as a light for the Gentiles,

that you should bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.’"✝13:47 Isaiah 49:6

48 As the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of God. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49 The Lord’s word was spread abroad throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, and stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their borders. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
