A controvérsia sobre a circuncisão

1 *At 15.24Alguns homens, descendo da Judeia, ensinavam *At 1.15;At 15.3,22,32aos irmãos: Se não vos *At 15.5;Gl 5.2s.; cp.1Co 7.18;Gl 2.11,14circuncidardes segundo *At 6.14o rito de Moisés, não podeis ser salvos. 2 Tendo tido Paulo e Barnabé uma grande contenda e *At 15.2,7discussão com eles, *cp.Gl 2.2os irmãos resolveram que Paulo, e Barnabé, e alguns outros dentre eles subissem *At 15.4,6,22-23;At 16.4;At 11.30aos apóstolos e presbíteros em Jerusalém acerca dessa questão. 3 Eles, pois, *At 20.38;21.5;Rm 15.24; cp.1Co 16.6,11;2Co 1.16;Tt 3.13;3Jo 6sendo acompanhados até uma parte do caminho pela igreja, passavam pela *At 11.19Fenícia e Samaria, *cp.At 14.27;At 15.4,12narrando a conversão dos gentios, 4 e davam grande alegria a todos os irmãos. Chegados a Jerusalém, foram bem recebidos pela igreja, pelos apóstolos e pelos presbíteros e referiram tudo o que Deus tinha feito com eles. 5 Mas levantaram-se alguns que tinham sido *cp.At 5.17;24.5,14;26.5;28.22da seita dos *Mt 3.7; cp.At 26.5fariseus e que haviam crido, dizendo: É necessário circuncidar os gentios e mandar-lhes que observem a Lei de Moisés.

O concílio em Jerusalém

6 Reuniram-se, pois, os apóstolos e os presbíteros para tratar dessa questão. 7 Havendo uma grande discussão, levantou-se Pedro e disse:

Irmãos, vós sabeis que há muito tempo *cp.At 10.19s.Deus escolheu-me dentre vós, para que da minha boca ouvissem os gentios a palavra do *At 20.24evangelho e cressem. 8 Deus, *At 1.24que conhece os corações, apresentou testemunho a favor deles, *At 10.47dando-lhes o Espírito Santo, como também a nós, 9 *cp.At 10.28,34;11.12e não fez distinção alguma entre nós e eles, *At 10.43purificando os seus corações pela fé. 10 Agora, pois, por que *cp.At 5.9provais a Deus, pondo um jugo sobre a cerviz dos discípulos, o qual *cp.Mt 23.4;Gl 5.1nem nossos pais, nem nós podemos suportar? 11 Mas cremos que *Rm 5.15; cp.3.24;2Co 13.1-4;Ef 2.5-8pela graça do Senhor Jesus seremos salvos, assim como eles.

O parecer de Tiago

12 Toda a assembleia calou-se e escutava a Barnabé e a Paulo, que contavam quantos *Jo 4.48milagres e prodígios Deus fizera entre os gentios por meio deles. 13 Depois de terminarem, *At 12.17Tiago respondeu:

Irmãos, ouvi-me. 14 *2Pe 1.1; cp.At 15.7Simão acaba de relatar como Deus primeiramente visitou os gentios, para tomar deles um povo para o seu nome. 15 Com isso concordam as palavras *cp.At 13.40;Am 9.11-12dos profetas, como está escrito:

16 Depois disto, *cp.Jr 12.15voltarei

e reedificarei o tabernáculo de Davi, que está caído;

reedificarei as suas ruínas

e tornarei a levantá-lo,

17 para que o resto dos homens busque ao Senhor,

sim, todos os gentios *Tg 2.7;Dt 28.10;Is 63.19;Jr 14.9;Dn 9.19, etc.que têm sido chamados pelo meu nome,

18 diz o Senhor, *Is 45.21que faz essas coisas conhecidas desde o princípio do mundo.

19 Por isso, *cp.At 15.28;At 21.25eu julgo que não se deve perturbar os gentios que se estão convertendo a Deus, 20 mas escrever-lhes que se abstenham das *At 15.29; cp.Dn 1.8;1Co 8.7-13;10.7-8,14-28;Ap 2.14,20viandas oferecidas aos ídolos, da fornicação, *Gn 9.4;Lv 3.17;7.26;17.10,14;19.26;Dt 12.16,23;15.23;1Sm 14.33dos animais sufocados e do sangue. 21 Pois *At 13.15;2Co 3.14s.Moisés, desde tempos antigos, tem, em cada cidade, homens que o pregam nas sinagogas, onde é lido todos os sábados.

A decisão enviada a Antioquia

22 Então, pareceu bem *At 15.2aos apóstolos e aos presbíteros com toda a igreja escolher homens dentre eles e enviá-los a *vd.At 11.20; (não13.14, etc.)Antioquia com Paulo e Barnabé; e escolheram Judas, chamado Barsabás, *At 15.27,32,40;At 16.19,25,29;17.4,10,14s.;18.5; cp.2Co 1.19;1Ts 1.1;2Ts 1.1;1Pe 5.12e Silas, homens principais entre *At 15.1os irmãos, 23 enviando, por mão deles, a seguinte carta: Os apóstolos e os presbíteros, irmãos, aos irmãos dentre os gentios em Antioquia, na *Mt 4.24; cp.At 15.41;Gl 1.21Síria e *At 6.9Cilícia, *At 23.26;Tg 1.1; cp.2Jo 10s.saúde. 24 Visto que soubemos que *At 15.1alguns dentre nós, aos quais não demos mandamento, vos tem *Gl 1.7;5.10perturbado com palavras, subvertendo as vossas almas, 25 *At 15.28pareceu-nos bem, chegados a um acordo, escolher homens e enviá-los a vós com os nossos amados Barnabé e Paulo, 26 que têm *At 9.23ss.;14.19exposto as suas vidas pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. 27 Enviamos, pois, *At 15.22,32Judas e *At 15.22Silas, que também, por palavras, dirão as mesmas coisas. 28 Pois pareceu bem ao *At 15.8; cp.At 5.32Espírito Santo e *At 15.19,25a nós não vos impor maior peso além destas coisas necessárias: 29 que vos abstenhais de *At 15.20coisas sacrificadas aos ídolos, *At 15.20de sangue, de animais sufocados e de fornicação; dessas coisas fareis bem de vos guardar. A leitura da carta do concílio

30 Despedidos eles, *At 15.22s.desceram a Antioquia e, tendo reunido a congregação, entregaram a carta. 31 A congregação, tendo-a lido, regozijou-se pelo conforto que lhe trouxe. 32 *At 15.22,27Judas e *At 15.22Silas, que eram também *At 13.1profetas, consolaram *At 15.1os irmãos com muitas palavras e os fortaleceram. 33 Tendo-se demorado ali por algum tempo, foram pelos irmãos despedidos *Mc 5.34;At 16.36;1Co 16.11; cp.Hb 11.31em paz aos que os *At 15.22tinham enviado.*Alguns manuscritos inserem o v. 34: Mas pareceu bem a Silas ficar ali.34 [Mas pareceu bem a Silas ficar ali.] 35 Mas *At 12.25Paulo e Barnabé demoraram-se em Antioquia, ensinando e *At 8.4pregando com muitos outros *At 13.12a palavra do Senhor.

A segunda viagem missionária. A separação entre Paulo e Barnabé

36 Alguns dias depois, disse Paulo a Barnabé: Voltemos agora para visitar os irmãos por *At 13.4,13-14,51;14.6,24s.todas as cidades em que temos anunciado a palavra do Senhor, para ver como passam. 37 Barnabé queria levar consigo também *At 12.12João, que tinha por sobrenome Marcos. 38 Mas Paulo não achou justo levar consigo a quem *At 13.13os tinha deixado desde a Panfília e que não os tinha acompanhado no trabalho. 39 Houve tal desavença, que se separaram um do outro, e Barnabé, levando consigo a *Cl 4.10;At 12.12;At 15.37Marcos, navegou para *At 4.36Chipre. 40 Mas Paulo, tendo escolhido a *At 15.22Silas, partiu, *At 14.26;At 11.23encomendado pelos irmãos à graça do Senhor. 41 Ele passou *Mt 4.24; cp.At 15.23pela Síria e *At 6.9Cilícia, fortalecendo as igrejas.

1 Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers,*15:1 The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." "Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved." 2 Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had no small discord and discussion with them, they appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question. 3 They, being sent on their way by the assembly, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles. They caused great joy to all the brothers. 4 When they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly and the apostles and the elders, and they reported everything that God had done with them.

5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses."

6 The apostles and the elders were gathered together to see about this matter. 7 When there had been much discussion, Peter rose up and said to them, "Brothers, you know that a good while ago God made a choice among you that by my mouth the nations should hear the word of the Good News and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, testified about them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just like he did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus,*15:11 TR adds "Christ" just as they are."

12 All the multitude kept silence, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul reporting what signs and wonders God had done among the nations through them. 13 After they were silent, James answered, "Brothers, listen to me. 14 Simeon has reported how God first visited the nations to take out of them a people for his name. 15 This agrees with the words of the prophets. As it is written,

16 ‘After these things I will return.

I will again build the tabernacle of David, which has fallen.

I will again build its ruins.

I will set it up 17 that the rest of men may seek after the Lord:

all the Gentiles who are called by my name,

says the Lord, who does all these things.’✝15:17 Amos 9:11-12

18 "All of God’s works are known to him from eternity. 19 Therefore my judgment is that we don’t trouble those from among the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but that we write to them that they abstain from the pollution of idols, from sexual immorality, from what is strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses from generations of old has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath."

22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brothers.*15:22 The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." 23 They wrote these things by their hand:

"The apostles, the elders, and the brothers, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: greetings. 24 Because we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, ‘You must be circumcised and keep the law,’ to whom we gave no commandment; 25 it seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves will also tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality, from which if you keep yourselves, it will be well with you. Farewell."

30 So, when they were sent off, they came to Antioch. Having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter. 31 When they had read it, they rejoiced over the encouragement. 32 Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged the brothers with many words and strengthened them. 33 After they had spent some time there, they were dismissed in peace from the brothers to the apostles. 34 *15:34 Some manuscripts add: But it seemed good to Silas to stay there. 35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

36 After some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let’s return now and visit our brothers in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, to see how they are doing." 37 Barnabas planned to take John, who was called Mark, with them also. 38 But Paul didn’t think that it was a good idea to take with them someone who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia, and didn’t go with them to do the work. 39 Then the contention grew so sharp that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and went out, being commended by the brothers to the grace of God. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the assemblies.
