Senaqueribe invade Judá

1 *2Rs 18.13Ora, no décimo quarto ano do *Is 1.1rei Ezequias, subiu Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, contra as cidades fortificadas de Judá e as tomou. 2 *Is 36.2—38.8; 2Rs 18.17—20.11;2Cr 32.9-24O rei da Assíria enviou de Laquis a Jerusalém ao rei Ezequias Rabsaqué com um grande exército. Este parou junto ao *Is 7.3aqueduto da piscina superior no caminho do campo do lavandeiro. 3 Então, saíram a ter com ele *Is 22.20Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, mordomo, *Is 22.15Sebna, secretário, e Joá, filho de Asafe, cronista-mor.

4 Disse-lhes *2Rs 18.19Rabsaqué: Dizei a Ezequias: Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: Que confiança é essa em que te estribas? 5 Digo, o teu conselho e poder para a guerra são tão somente palavras vãs. Em quem, pois, agora, confias, visto que *2Rs 18.7hás rebelado contra mim? 6 Eis que confias no Egito, *Ez 29.6-7no bordão desse caniço esmagado, sobre o qual, se o homem se firmar, ele se lhe meterá pela mão e a traspassará; *Is 30.3,5,7;Sl 146.3assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para todos os que nele confiam. 7 Mas, se me disseres: Confiamos em Jeová, nosso Deus, não é este aquele *Dt 12.2-5;2Rs 18.4-5cujos altos e altares Ezequias tirou, dizendo a Judá e a Jerusalém: Diante deste altar adorareis? 8 Agora, pois, dá penhores ao rei da Assíria, meu amo, e dar-te-ei dois mil cavalos, se da tua parte puderes achar homens para montar neles. 9 Como, então, poderás *Is 37.29pôr em fuga um só capitão dos menores dos servos do meu amo e *Is 20.5;30.2-5,7;31.3confiar no Egito para obteres cavalos e carros? 10 Porventura, subi eu, agora, sem Jeová contra esta terra para a destruir? *1Rs 13.18;22.6,12Disse-me Jeová: Sobe contra esta terra e destrói-a.

11 Então, disseram Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá a Rabsaqué: Rogamos-te que fales aos teus servos na *Ed 4.7;Dn 2.4língua aramaica, pois nós a entendemos; e não nos fales *Is 36.13na língua dos judeus aos ouvidos do povo que está em cima do muro. 12 Mas Rabsaqué respondeu-lhes: Enviou-me, porventura, o meu amo ao teu amo e a ti para falar essas palavras? Não me enviou aos homens que estão sentados em cima do muro, para que, juntamente convosco, comam o seu excremento e bebam a sua urina?

13 Então, Rabsaqué se pôs em pé *2Cr 32.18e, gritando em alta voz na língua dos judeus, disse: Ouvi as palavras do grande rei, do rei da Assíria. 14 Assim diz o rei: *Is 37.10Não vos engane Ezequias, porque não vos poderá livrar. 15 Nem tampouco vos faça Ezequias *Is 36.18,20;37.10-11confiar em Jeová, dizendo: Jeová, na verdade, nos livrará; esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria. 16 Não deis ouvidos a Ezequias. Pois assim diz o rei da Assíria: Fazei as vossas pazes comigo e saí para mim; coma cada um de vós da sua *1Rs 4.25;Mq 4.4;Zc 3.10vinha e da sua figueira e beba cada um *Pv 5.15as águas da sua cisterna; 17 até que eu venha e vos transfira para uma terra que é semelhante a vossa terra, terra de trigo e de mosto, terra de pão e de vinho. 18 Guardai-vos não vos iluda Ezequias, dizendo: *Is 36.15Jeová nos livrará. Acaso, os deuses das nações livraram cada um a sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria? 19 Onde estão os deuses de *Is 10.9-11;37.11-13;Jr 49.23Hamate e Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Livraram *2Rs 17.6eles de minha mão a Samaria? 20 *1Rs 20.23,28Entre todos os deuses das terras, quais são os que livraram da minha mão a sua terra, para que *Is 36.15Jeová possa livrar da minha mão a Jerusalém?

21 Eles, porém, se calaram e não lhe responderam palavra. Pois o rei ordenou, dizendo: Não lhe respondais. 22 Então, *Is 36.3;22.20Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, mordomo, e *Is 22.15Sebna, secretário, e Joá, filho de Asafe, cronista-mor, vieram ter com Ezequias, rasgados os vestidos, e lhe referiram as palavras de Rabsaqué.

1 Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. 2 The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway. 3 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder came out to him.

4 Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, "What confidence is this in which you trust? 5 I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me? 6 Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 7 But if you tell me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?" 8 Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9 How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."’"

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."

12 But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?" 13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you. 15 Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."’ 16 Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "Yahweh will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 20 Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’"

21 But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, "Don’t answer him."

22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
