Jonas 4

A queixa de Jonas e a lição do palma-christi

1 Mas isso desagradou extremamente a Jonas, e ele ficou *Jn 4.4,9;Mt 20.15;Lc 15.28irado. 2 *Jr 20.7Orou a Jeová e disse: Ah! Jeová, não foi esta a minha palavra, estando eu ainda no meu país? Por isso é que me apressei *Jn 1.3a fugir para Társis, pois eu sabia que tu és um *Êx 34.6;Nm 14.18;Sl 86.5,15;Jl 2.13;Mq 7.18Deus clemente e misericordioso, tardio em irar-se e de grande beneficência e que te arrependes do mal. 3 Agora, Jeová, *Jn 4.8;1Rs 19.4;Jó 6.8-9tira-me a vida, pois *Jó 7.15-16;Ec 7.1melhor me é morrer do que viver. 4 Respondeu Jeová: *Jn 4.9;Mt 20.11,15Fica-te bem a tua ira? 5 Então, Jonas saiu da cidade e *1Rs 19.9,13se assentou ao oriente dela; ali, fez para si uma barraca e, debaixo dela, sentou-se à sombra, até ver o que houvesse de suceder à cidade.

6 *Jn 1.17Deus Jeová preparou um palma-christi e fê-lo subir por cima de Jonas, para que lhe desse sombra sobre a cabeça, a fim de o livrar do seu mau estado. Jonas, pois, ficou em *Am 6.13extremo contente por causa do palma-christi. 7 Deus, porém, preparou um bicho ao romper da alva no dia seguinte, e o bicho feriu o palma-christi, de sorte que *Jl 1.12se secou. 8 Ao nascer do sol, preparou Deus um *Ez 19.12;Os 13.15vento calmoso do oriente; o *Sl 121.6;Is 49.10sol deu na cabeça de Jonas, de maneira que desmaiou; pediu para si a *Jn 4.3morte e disse: Melhor me é morrer do que viver. 9 Deus perguntou a Jonas: *Jn 4.4Fica-te bem a tua ira por causa do palma-christi? Respondeu ele: Tenho razão de me irar até a morte. 10 Jeová disse: Tu tiveste compaixão do palma-christi, pela qual não trabalhaste, nem fizeste crescer; que nasceu numa noite e numa noite pereceu. 11 Não hei de eu *Jn 3.10ter compaixão da *Jn 3.3grande cidade de *Jn 1.2;3.2-3Nínive, em que há mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que *Dt 1.39;Is 7.16não sabem discernir entre a sua mão direita e a sua esquerda, e também muito *Sl 36.6gado?

1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 He prayed to Yahweh, and said, "Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm. 3 Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live."

4 Yahweh said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"

5 Then Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city. 6 Yahweh God prepared a vine and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine. 7 But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine so that it withered. 8 When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he was faint and requested for himself that he might die. He said, "It is better for me to die than to live."

9 God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?"

He said, "I am right to be angry, even to death."

10 Yahweh said, "You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many animals?"
