Jonas 3

Jonas prega em Nínive: o arrependimento dos ninivitas

1 Pela *Jn 1.1-2segunda vez, veio a palavra de Jeová a Jonas, dizendo: 2 Levanta-te, vai à grande cidade de *Sf 2.13-15Nínive e *Jr 1.17;Ez 2.7faze-lhe a pregação que eu te ordeno. 3 Levantou-se, pois, Jonas e foi a Nínive, conforme a palavra de Jeová. Ora, Nínive era uma *Jn 1.2;4.11cidade em extremo grande, de três dias de jornada. 4 Jonas começou a entrar na cidade, fazendo a jornada dum dia, e *Mt 12.41;Lc 11.32clamou, e disse: *2Rs 20.1,6;Jr 18.7-10Ainda quarenta dias, e Nínive será subvertida.

5 Os homens de Nínive creram em Deus; proclamaram um *Dn 9.3;Jl 1.14jejum e vestiram-se de *Gn 37.34;2Sm 3.31saco, *Jr 31.34desde o maior até o menor deles. 6 Chegou a nova ao rei de Nínive; ele se levantou do seu trono, se despiu do seu manto e, *Et 4.1-4;Jr 6.26;Ez 27.30-31;Dn 9.3cobrindo-se de saco, se assentou sobre a cinza. 7 Ele fez *Jn 3.5;2Cr 20.3;Ed 8.21apregoar e publicou em Nínive pelo decreto do rei e dos seus nobres o que se segue: Não provem coisa alguma nem homens, nem animais, nem bois, nem ovelhas; não comam, nem bebam água; 8 mas sejam cobertos de saco, tanto homens como animais, *Jn 1.6,14;Sl 130.1e clamem fortemente a Deus; sim, *Is 1.16-19;55.6-7;Jr 18.11convertam-se cada um do seu mau caminho e da violência que se acha nas suas mãos. 9 *2Sm 12.22;Jl 2.14Quem sabe se voltará Deus, e se arrependerá, e se apartará do furor da sua ira, para que não pereçamos? 10 Viu Deus o que fizeram, como *1Rs 21.27-29;Jr 31.18se converteram de seu mau caminho; *Êx 32.14;Jr 18.8;Am 7.3,6Deus arrependeu-se do mal que tinha dito lhes faria e não o fez.

1 Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you."

3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across. 4 Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, "In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!"

5 The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least. 6 The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, "Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; 8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?"

10 God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.
