Nicodemos visita a Jesus

1 Havia um homem, dentre os fariseus, chamado *Jo 7.50;19.39Nicodemos, *Lc 23.13; cp.Jo 7.26,48principal entre os judeus. 2 Este foi ter com Jesus de noite e disse-lhe: *Mt 23.7;Jo 3.26Rabi, sabemos que és mestre vindo da parte de Deus; pois ninguém pode fazer estes *Jo 2.11,23milagres que tu fazes, se *At 10.38; cp.Jo 9.33;10.39;14.10s.;At 2.22Deus não estiver com ele. 3 Jesus respondeu-lhe: Em verdade, em verdade te digo que, se alguém *1Pe 1.23; cp.2Co 5.17não nascer de novo, não pode ver *Jo 3.5;Mt 19.24;21.31;Mc 9.47;10.14-15, etc.o reino de Deus. 4 Perguntou-lhe Nicodemos: Como pode um homem nascer, sendo velho? Pode, porventura, entrar novamente no ventre de sua mãe e nascer? 5 Respondeu Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade te digo que, se alguém não nascer *Ez 36.25-27; cp.Ef 5.26;Tt 3.5da água e do Espírito, não pode entrar no reino de Deus. 6 *Jo 1.13;1Co 15.50O que é nascido da carne é carne; e o que é nascido do Espírito é espírito. 7 Não te maravilhes de eu te dizer: É-vos necessário nascer de novo. 8 *cp.Ec 11.5;Ez 37.9;Sl 135.7O vento sopra onde quer, e ouves a sua voz, mas não sabes donde vem, nem para onde vai; assim é todo aquele que é nascido do Espírito. 9 Como pode ser isso? — perguntou-lhe Nicodemos. 10 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Tu és *Lc 2.46; cp.5.17;At 5.34mestre em Israel e não entendes essas coisas? 11 Em verdade, em verdade te digo que *Jo 7.16s.;8.26,28;12.49;14.24; cp.Jo 1.18falamos o que sabemos *Jo 3.32e testificamos o que temos visto, e não recebeis o nosso testemunho. 12 Se vos tenho falado das coisas terrenas, e não me credes, como crereis, se vos falar das celestiais? 13 *Pv 30.4; cp.Dt 30.12;At 2.34;Rm 10.6;Ef 4.9Ninguém subiu ao céu, senão *Jo 3.31;Jo 6.38,42aquele que desceu do céu, a saber, *Mt 8.20o Filho do Homem. 14 Como *Nm 21.9Moisés levantou a serpente no deserto, assim importa que o Filho do Homem *Jo 8.22;12.34seja levantado, 15 para que todo o que *Jo 20.31;1Jo 5.11-13nele crê tenha a vida eterna.

A missão do Filho

16 Pois assim *Rm 5.8;Ef 2.4;2Ts 2.16;1Jo 4.10;Ap 1.5amou Deus ao mundo que *Rm 8.32;1Jo 4.9deu seu Filho *Jo 1.18;Jo 3.18;1Jo 4.9unigênito, para que todo o que *Jo 3.36;Jo 6.40;11.25s.nele crê não pereça, mas tenha a vida eterna. 17 Pois Deus não *Jo 3.34;Jo 5.36,38;6.29,38,57;7.29;8.42;10.36;11.42;17.3,8,18,21,23,25;20.21enviou o Filho ao mundo para *Jo 8.15;12.47; cp.Lc 19.10;1Jo 4.14julgar o mundo, mas para que o mundo seja salvo por ele. 18 *cp.Mc 16.16;Jo 5.24Quem nele crê não é julgado; o que não crê já está julgado, porque não crê no nome do *Jo 1.18;1Jo 4.9Filho unigênito de Deus. 19 O juízo é este: que *cp.Jo 1.4;8.12;9.5;12.46a luz veio ao mundo, e os homens amaram mais as trevas do que a luz; *Jo 7.7pois eram más as suas obras. 20 *Jo 3.20-21; cp.Ef 5.11,13Porquanto todo aquele que pratica o mal aborrece a luz e não vem para a luz, a fim de que as suas obras não sejam arguidas; 21 mas aquele que *1Jo 1.6faz o bem chega-se para a luz, a fim de que sejam manifestas as suas obras, que têm sido feitas em Deus.

O último testemunho de João Batista

22 Depois disso, foi Jesus com seus *Jo 2.2discípulos para a terra da Judeia; ali se demorava com eles *Jo 4.1-2e batizava. 23 João também estava batizando em Enom, perto de Salim, porque havia ali muitas águas, e o povo ia e era batizado. 24 Pois *Mt 4.12João não tinha sido ainda lançado no cárcere. 25 Ora, levantou-se uma discussão entre os discípulos de João e um judeu acerca da *Jo 2.6purificação. 26 Eles foram ter com João e disseram-lhe: *Jo 3.2;Mt 23.7Mestre, aquele que estava contigo *Jo 1.28além do Jordão, de quem *Jo 1.7tens dado testemunho, ei-lo aí está batizando, e todos vão a ele. 27 Respondeu João: *1Co 4.7; cp.Hb 5.4O homem não pode receber coisa alguma se do céu não lhe for dada. 28 Vós mesmos me sois testemunhas de que eu disse: *Jo 1.20,23Eu não sou o Cristo, mas sou enviado adiante dele. 29 O que tem a esposa é *cp.Mt 25.1;9.15o esposo; mas o amigo do esposo, que está presente e o ouve, muito se regozija por causa da voz do esposo. Pois este meu *Jo 15.11;16.24;17.13;Fp 2.2;1Jo 1.4;2Jo 12gozo está completo. 30 É necessário que ele cresça e que eu diminua.

O Filho em relação ao mundo

31 *Jo 3.13;Jo 8.23O que vem de cima é sobre todos; o que é da terra é da terra e *cp.1Jo 4.5fala da terra. O que vem do céu é sobre todos; 32 o que ele tem visto e ouvido, isso *Jo 3.11testifica; e ninguém recebe o seu testemunho. 33 O que recebeu o seu testemunho, este *Jo 6.27;Rm 4.11;15.28;1Co 9.2;2Co 1.22;Ef 1.13;4.30;2Tm 2.19;Ap 7.3-8certificou que Deus é verdadeiro. 34 Pois aquele que Deus *Jo 3.17enviou fala as palavras de Deus; *Mt 12.18;Lc 4.18;At 1.2;10.38porque ele não dá o Espírito por medida. 35 *Jo 5.20;17.2;Mt 28.18O Pai ama ao Filho e tudo tem posto nas suas mãos. 36 O que *Jo 3.16crê no Filho tem a vida eterna; o que, porém, *cp.At 14.2;Hb 3.18desobedece ao Filho não verá a vida, mas sobre ele permanece a ira de Deus.

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him."

3 Jesus answered him, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, *3:3 The word translated "anew" here and in John 3:7 (ἄνωθεν) also means "again" and "from above". he can’t see God’s Kingdom."

4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?"

5 Jesus answered, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must all be born anew.’ 8 The wind*3:8 The same Greek word (πνεῦμα) means wind, breath, and spirit. blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

9 Nicodemus answered him, "How can these things be?"

10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things? 11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness. 12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. 14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born*3:16 The phrase "only born" is from the Greek word "μονογενη", which is sometimes translated "only begotten" or "one and only". Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only born Son of God. 19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God."

22 After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them and baptized. 23 John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came and were baptized; 24 for John was not yet thrown into prison. 25 Therefore a dispute arose on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification. 26 They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, he baptizes, and everyone is coming to him."

27 John answered, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore my joy is made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 "He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness. 33 He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. 36 One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys*3:36 The same word can be translated "disobeys" or "disbelieves" in this context. the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."
