A multiplicação dos pães

1 Depois disso, *Jo 6.1-13;Mt 14.13-21;Mc 6.32-44;Lc 9.10-17Jesus atravessou o *Mt 4.18; cp.Lc 5.1mar da Galileia, que é o *Jo 21.1; cp.Jo 6.23de Tiberíades. 2 Uma grande multidão seguia-o, porque viram *Jo 2.11os milagres que operara nos que se achavam enfermos. 3 Jesus subiu *Jo 6.15; cp.Mt 5.1ao monte e ali se assentou com seus discípulos. 4 Ora, a *Jo 2.13Páscoa, festa dos judeus, estava próxima. 5 Jesus, então, levantando os olhos e vendo que uma grande multidão vinha ter com ele, disse a *Jo 1.43Filipe: Onde compraremos pão para lhes dar de comer? 6 (Mas dizia isso para o *cp.2Co 13.5;Ap 2.2(Gr.)experimentar; porque ele sabia o que ia fazer.) 7 Respondeu-lhe Filipe: *Mc 6.37Duzentos denários*Um denário valia 315 réis, moeda brasileira. de pão não lhes bastam, para que cada um receba um pouco. 8 Um de seus *Jo 2.2discípulos, chamado *Jo 1.40André, irmão de Pedro, disse-lhe: 9 Está aqui um rapaz que tem cinco pães de cevada e dois *Jo 21.9-10,13;Jo 6.11peixes; mas que é isso para tanto povo? 10 Disse Jesus: Fazei sentar o povo. Havia naquele lugar *cp.Jo 6.4;Mc 6.39muito feno. Sentaram-se, pois, os homens em número de cerca de *cp.Mt 14.21cinco mil. 11 Jesus, então, tomou os pães e, *Jo 6.23;Mt 15.36tendo dado graças, distribuiu-os pelos que estavam sentados; e do mesmo modo dos peixes, quanto queriam. 12 Depois de saciados, disse Jesus a seus discípulos: Recolhei os pedaços que sobejaram, para que nada se perca. 13 Assim, os recolheram e encheram doze *Mt 14.20cestos de pedaços dos cinco pães de cevada, que sobejaram aos que haviam comido. 14 Quando o povo viu o milagre que Jesus fizera, dizia: Este é verdadeiramente o *Jo 1.21;Mt 11.3;21.11profeta que havia de vir ao mundo.

Jesus retira-se da multidão

15 Percebendo Jesus que eles estavam para vir e levá-lo à força, a fim de *cp.Jo 18.36s.constituí-lo rei, *Jo 6.15-21;Mt 14.22-23;Mc 6.46-51retirou-se novamente para *Jo 6.3o monte, ele só.

Jesus anda sobre o mar

16 Chegada a tarde, desceram os seus discípulos ao mar; e, entrando numa barca, 17 atravessaram o mar para ir a *cp.Mc 6.45;Jo 6.24,59Cafarnaum. Era já escuro, e Jesus ainda não tinha vindo ter com eles; 18 e o mar empolava-se, porque soprava um vento forte. 19 Tendo remado uns vinte e cinco ou trinta estádios*Estádio, medida itinerária de 185 metros., viram a Jesus andando sobre o mar e aproximando-se da barca, e ficaram com medo. 20 Mas ele lhes disse: Sou eu. *Mt 14.27Não temais! 21 Eles, então, o receberam de boa vontade na barca, e imediatamente a barca chegou à terra para onde iam.

Jesus é o pão da vida

22 No dia seguinte, *Jo 6.2a multidão que ficara no outro lado do mar notou que *Jo 6.15ss.não havia ali senão uma barca, e que Jesus não tinha entrado nela com seus discípulos, mas que estes tinham partido sós; 23 chegaram, porém, outras barcas de *cp.Jo 6.1Tiberíades, perto do lugar onde comeram o pão, depois de o *Lc 7.13Senhor *Jo 6.11ter dado graças. 24 Quando, pois, a multidão viu que Jesus não estava ali nem os seus discípulos, entraram nas barcas e *Jo 6.17,59; cp.Mt 14.34;Mc 6.53foram a Cafarnaum em procura de Jesus. 25 Depois de o terem achado no outro lado do mar, perguntaram-lhe: *Mt 23.7Mestre, quando chegaste aqui? 26 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: vós me *Jo 6.24procurais, não porque vistes *Jo 6.2,14,30milagres, mas porque comestes dos pães e vos fartastes. 27 *Is 55.2Trabalhai, não pela comida que perece, mas pela comida que permanece para *Jo 6.40,47,54;Jo 3.15s.;4.14;10.28;17.2s.a vida eterna, a qual *Mt 8.20;Jo 6.53,62o Filho do Homem vos dará; porque sobre ele *Jo 3.33imprimiu o seu selo o Pai, que é Deus. 28 Eles lhe perguntaram: Que havemos de fazer para praticar as obras de Deus? 29 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: *cp.1Ts 1.3;Tg 2.22;1Jo 3.23;Ap 2.26A obra de Deus é esta: que creiais naquele que *Jo 3.17ele enviou. 30 Perguntaram-lhe, pois: *Mt 12.38Que *cp.Jo 6.2,14,26milagre operas tu, para que o vejamos e te creiamos? Que fazes tu? 31 *Jo 6.49,58;Êx 16.4,15,21;Nm 11.8;Ne 9.15;Sl 78.24;105.40Nossos pais comeram o maná no deserto, como está escrito: Deu-lhes a comer pão do céu. 32 Replicou-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: não foi Moisés quem vos deu o pão do céu, mas meu Pai é quem vos dá o verdadeiro pão do céu; 33 porque o pão de Deus é o que *Jo 6.50; cp.Jo 6.41desce do céu e dá vida ao mundo. 34 Disseram-lhe, então: Senhor, *cp.Jo 4.15dá-nos sempre esse pão. 35 Declarou-lhes Jesus: *Jo 6.48,51Eu sou o pão da vida; o que vem a mim de modo algum terá fome; e o que crê em mim *Jo 4.14nunca jamais terá sede. 36 Mas *Jo 6.26eu vos disse que vós me tendes visto e não credes. 37 *Jo 6.39;Jo 17.2,24Todo o que o Pai me dá virá a mim; e o que vem a mim de modo nenhum o lançarei fora; 38 porque *Jo 3.13eu desci do céu, *Mt 26.39não para fazer a minha vontade, *Jo 4.34;5.30mas a vontade daquele que *Jo 6.29me enviou. 39 A vontade daquele que me enviou é esta: que eu *Jo 17.12;18.9nada perca de tudo o que ele me tem dado, mas que eu *Jo 6.40,44,54; cp.Jo 11.24;Mt 10.15o ressuscite no último dia. 40 Pois esta é a vontade de meu Pai: que todo o que *Jo 12.45; cp.14.17,19vê o Filho do Homem *Jo 3.16e nele crê tenha a vida eterna; e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia.

A murmuração dos judeus

41 *Jo 1.19;Jo 6.52Os judeus, pois, murmuravam dele, porque dissera: Eu sou o pão que *Jo 6.51,58; cp.Jo 6.33desci do céu, 42 e perguntaram: *Lc 4.22Este não é Jesus, o filho de José, cujo pai e mãe nós *cp.Jo 7.27s.conhecemos? Como, pois, diz agora: *Jo 6.38,62Desci do céu? 43 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Não murmureis entre vós. 44 Ninguém pode vir a mim, se o Pai, que me enviou, *Jr 31.3;Os 11.4;Jo 12.32;Jo 6.65o não trouxer; e eu o *Jo 6.39ressuscitarei no último dia. 45 Está escrito *cp.At 7.42;13.40;Hb 8.11nos profetas: E serão todos *Is 54.13;Jr 31.34;1Ts 4.9; vd.Fp 3.15; cp.1Jo 2.27ensinados por Deus. Todo aquele que do Pai tem ouvido e aprendido vem a mim. 46 *Jo 1.18Não que alguém tenha visto o Pai; somente aquele que vem de Deus tem visto o Pai. 47 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: quem crê *Jo 6.47,51,58;Jo 3.36;5.24;11.26tem a vida eterna. 48 *Jo 6.35,51Eu sou o pão da vida. 49 *Jo 6.31,58Vossos pais comeram o maná no deserto e morreram. 50 Este é o pão que *Jo 6.33desce do céu, para que o homem coma dele e não morra. 51 *Jo 6.35,48Eu sou o pão vivo que *Jo 6.41,58desci do céu; se alguém comer desse pão, viverá eternamente; e o pão que eu darei pela *cp.Jo 1.29;3.14s.;Hb 10.10;1Jo 4.10vida do mundo é a minha *Jo 6.53-56carne.

52 *cp.Jo 9.16;10.19Disputavam, *Jo 1.19;Jo 6.41pois, os judeus entre si, dizendo: Como pode este homem dar-nos a comer a sua carne? 53 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: se não comerdes a carne do *Jo 6.27,53,62;Mt 8.20Filho do Homem e não beberdes o seu sangue, não tendes a vida em vós. 54 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue tem a vida eterna; *Jo 6.39e eu o ressuscitarei no último dia. 55 Pois a minha carne é verdadeira comida, e o meu sangue, verdadeira bebida. 56 Quem come a minha carne e bebe o meu sangue *Jo 15.4s.;1Jo 2.24;3.24;4.15s.; cp.Jo 17.23permanece em mim e eu nele. 57 Assim como *cp.Mt 16.16;Jo 5.26o Pai, que vive, *Jo 6.29,38;Jo 3.17me enviou, e eu também vivo pelo Pai, assim quem de mim se alimenta também viverá por mim. 58 Este é o pão que *Jo 6.41,51; cp.Jo 6.33desceu do céu. *Jo 6.31,49Não é como o pão de vossos pais, que comeram e morreram; quem come este pão *Jo 6.47,51,58;Jo 3.36;5.24;11.26viverá eternamente. 59 Essas coisas disse ele, quando ensinava *Mt 4.23na sinagoga em *Jo 6.24Cafarnaum.

Os discípulos escandalizados

60 Muitos de seus *Jo 2.2;Jo 6.66;7.3discípulos, ouvindo isso, disseram: *Jo 6.52Duro é este discurso; quem o pode ouvir? 61 Mas Jesus, *Jo 6.64sabendo por si mesmo que seus discípulos murmuravam das suas palavras, disse-lhes: Isso *Mt 11.6vos escandaliza? 62 Que seria, se vós vísseis *Jo 6.27,53;Mt 8.20o Filho do Homem *Mc 16.19; cp.Jo 3.13subir aonde estava antes? 63 *2Co 3.6O Espírito é o que vivifica; a carne para nada aproveita; *Jo 6.68as palavras que eu vos tenho dito são espírito e são vida. 64 Mas entre vós há *Jo 6.60,66alguns que não creem. Pois Jesus *Jo 2.25sabia, desde o princípio, quais eram os que não criam *Jo 6.71;Jo 13.11;Mt 10.4e quem o havia de trair. 65 E continuou: Por isso, eu vos tenho *Jo 6.37,44dito que ninguém pode vir a mim, *cp.Mt 13.11;Jo 3.27se, pelo Pai, lhe não for concedido.

Muitos dos discípulos se retiram

66 Nisso, muitos de seus discípulos *Jo 6.60,64se retiraram e não andavam mais com ele. 67 Perguntou, então, Jesus *Jo 6.70s.;20.24;Mt 10.2; cp.Jo 2.2aos doze: Quereis vós também retirar-vos? 68 Respondeu-lhe *cp.Mt 16.16Simão Pedro: Senhor, para quem havemos nós de ir? Tu tens *Jo 6.63; cp.Jo 12.49s.;17.8;At 5.20palavras da vida eterna; 69 e nós temos crido e conhecemos que tu és *Mc 1.24o Santo de Deus. 70 Replicou-lhes Jesus: *Jo 15.16,19Não vos escolhi eu a vós, os doze? Contudo, um de vós é um *cp.Jo 13.2,27;8.44;17.12demônio. 71 Falava de Judas, *Jo 13.26; cp.12.4;13.2filho de Simão Iscariotes; porque era ele o que *Jo 6.64o havia de trair, sendo *Mc 14.10um dos doze.

1 After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick. 3 Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii*6:7 A denarius was a silver coin worth about a day’s wages for an agricultural laborer, so 200 denarii would be between 6 and 7 month’s pay. worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little."

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?"

10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired. 12 When they were filled, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, "This is truly the prophet who comes into the world." 15 Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea. 17 They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing. 19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,*6:19 25 to 30 stadia is about 5 to 6 kilometers or about 3 to 4 miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea✝6:19 See Job 9:8 and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid. 20 But he said to them, "It is I.*6:20 or, I AM Don’t be afraid." 21 They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

22 On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone. 23 However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"

26 Jesus answered them, "Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him."

28 They said therefore to him, "What must we do, that we may work the works of God?"

29 Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

30 They said therefore to him, "What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven*6:31 Greek and Hebrew use the same word for "heaven", "the heavens", "the sky", and "the air". to eat.’"✝6:31 Exodus 16:4; Nehemiah 9:15; Psalms 78:24-25

32 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world."

34 They said therefore to him, "Lord, always give us this bread."

35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe. 37 All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day. 40 This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

41 The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down out of heaven." 42 They said, "Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?"

43 Therefore Jesus answered them, "Don’t murmur among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ ✝6:45 Isaiah 54:13 Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father. 47 Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

52 The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

53 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves. 54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever." 59 He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
