Neemias, sabendo o triste estado de Jerusalém, ora a Deus

1 Palavras de *Ne 10.1Neemias, filho de Hacalias.

Sucedeu *Zc 7.1no mês de quisleu, *Ne 2.1no ano vinte, quando eu estava no castelo de *Et 1.2;Dn 8.2Susa, 2 veio *Ne 7.2Hanani, um de meus irmãos, com alguns homens de Judá; e perguntei-lhes a respeito dos judeus que tinham escapado, os restos do cativeiro, e a respeito de Jerusalém. 3 Eles me responderam: Os restos que ficaram do cativeiro lá na *Ne 7.6província estão em grande aflição e *Ne 2.17opróbrio. *Ne 2.17Os muros de Jerusalém estão demolidos, e *Ne 2.3as suas portas, consumidas do fogo.

4 Ao ouvir essas palavras, *Ed 9.3;10.1sentei-me, e chorei, e pranteei alguns dias; jejuei, e orei diante *Ne 2.4do Deus do céu, 5 e disse: Rogo-te, Jeová, Deus do céu, *Ne 4.14;9.32que és o Deus grande e terrível, que guardas a aliança e a misericórdia com aqueles que o amam e observam os seus mandamentos, 6 *Dn 9.17estejam atentos os teus ouvidos e abertos os teus olhos, para ouvires a oração de teu servo, que eu hoje faço em tua presença, de dia e de noite, pelos filhos de Israel, teus servos, *Ed 10.1;Dn 9.20confessando eu os pecados dos filhos de Israel, que temos cometido contra ti. *2Cr 29.6Eu e a casa de meu pai temos pecado. 7 *Dn 9.5Perversamente temos procedido contra ti e não temos guardado os mandamentos, nem os estatutos, nem os juízos *Dt 28.14que ordenaste ao teu servo Moisés. 8 Lembra-te da palavra que ordenaste ao teu servo Moisés, dizendo: *Lv 26.33Se vós transgredirdes, eu vos espalharei por entre os povos; 9 *Dt 30.2-3mas, se vos converterdes a mim, e guardardes os meus mandamentos, e os cumprirdes, ainda que os vossos dispersos estejam na extremidade do céu, *Dt 30.4contudo, de lá os ajuntarei, e os reconduzirei *Dt 12.5para o lugar que escolhi para ali fazer habitar o meu nome. 10 *Êx 32.11;Dt 9.29Estes são os teus servos e o teu povo, os quais resgataste com teu grande poder e com tua mão poderosa. 11 Rogo-te, Senhor, *Ne 1.6que estejam atentos os teus ouvidos à oração do teu servo e à oração dos teus servos que se deleitam em temer o teu nome; faze hoje bem sucedido o teu servo e concede-lhe misericórdia diante deste homem. Ora, eu era *Ne 2.1;Gn 40.21copeiro do rei.

1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah.

Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the palace, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, "The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire."

4 When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God*1:4 The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "אֱלֹהִ֑ים" (Elohim). of heaven, 5 and said, "I beg you, Yahweh,*1:5 "Yahweh" is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations. the God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear now be attentive and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants, while I confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned. 7 We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.

8 "Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you among the peoples; 9 but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’

10 "Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11 Lord,*1:11 The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai." I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man."

Now I was cup bearer to the king.
