1 These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.2 And Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, You{+} have seen all that Yahweh did before your{+} eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his slaves, and to all his land;3 the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders:4 but Yahweh has not given you{+} a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day.5 And I have led you{+} forty years in the wilderness: your{+} clothes are not waxed old on you{+}, and your sandals have not waxed old on your feet.6 You{+} have not eaten bread, neither have you{+} drank wine or strong drink; that you{+} may know that I am Yahweh your{+} God.7 And when you{+} came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we struck them:8 and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that you{+} may prosper in all that you{+} do.10 You{+} stand this day all of you{+} before Yahweh your{+} God; your{+} heads, your{+} tribes, your{+} elders, and your{+} officers, even all the men of Israel,11 your{+} little ones, your{+} wives, and your sojourner who is in the midst of your camps, from the cutter of your wood to the drawer of your water;12 that you may enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God, and into his oath, which Yahweh your God makes with you this day;13 that he may establish you this day to himself for a people, and that he may be to you a God, as he spoke to you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.14 Neither with you{+} only do I make this covenant and this oath,15 but with him who stands here with us this day before Yahweh our God, and also with him who is not here with us this day16 (for you{+} know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you{+} passed;17 and you{+} have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them);18 or else if there should be among you{+} man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; and if there should be among you{+} a root that bears gall and wormwood;19 and it comes to pass, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, I will have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to destroy the moist with the dry.20 Yahweh will not pardon him, but then the anger of Yahweh and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book will lie on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven.21 And Yahweh will set him apart to evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.22 And the generation to come, your{+} sons who will rise up after you{+}, and the foreigner who will come from a far land, will say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which Yahweh has made it sick;23 [and that] the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:24 even all the nations will say, Why has Yahweh done thus to this land? What [is the meaning of] the heat of this great anger?25 Then men will say, Because they forsook the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt,26 and went and served other gods, and worshiped them, gods that they did not know, and that he had not given to them:27 therefore the anger of Yahweh was kindled against this land, to bring on it all the curse that is written in this book;28 and Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as at this day.29 The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

1 São estes os termos da aliança que o Senhor ordenou que Moisés fizesse com os israelitas em Moabe, além da aliança que tinha feito com eles em Horebe.2 Moisés convocou todos os israelitas e lhes disse: Os seus olhos viram tudo o que o Senhor fez no Egito ao faraó, a todos os seus oficiais e a toda a sua terra.3 Com os seus próprios olhos vocês viram aquelas grandes provas, aqueles sinais e grandes maravilhas.4 Mas até hoje o Senhor não lhes deu mente que entenda, olhos que vejam, e ouvidos que ouçam.5 "Durante os quarenta anos que os conduzi pelo deserto", disse ele, "nem as suas roupas, nem as sandálias dos seus pés se gastaram.6 Vocês não comeram pão, nem beberam vinho, nem qualquer outra bebida fermentada. Fiz isso para que vocês soubessem que eu sou o Senhor, o seu Deus. "7 Quando vocês chegaram a este lugar, Seom, rei de Hesbom, e Ogue, rei de Basã, atacou-os, mas nós os derrotamos.8 Conquistamos a terra deles e a demos por herança as tribos de Rúben e de Gade e à metade da tribo de Manassés.9 Sigam fielmente os termos desta aliança, para que vocês prosperem em tudo o que fizerem.10 Hoje todos vocês estão na presença do Senhor, do seu Deus: os seus chefes e homens destacados, os seus líderes e oficiais, e todos os demais homens de Israel,11 juntamente com os seus filhos e as suas mulheres e os estrangeiros que vivem nos seus acampamentos cortando lenha e carregando água para vocês.12 Vocês estão aqui presentes para entrar em aliança com o Senhor, o seu Deus, aliança que ele está fazendo com vocês hoje, selando-a sob juramento,13 para hoje confirmá-los como seu povo, para que ele seja o seu Deus conforme lhes prometeu e jurou aos seus antepassados, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó.14 Não faço esta aliança, sob juramento, somente com vocês15 que estão aqui conosco na presença do Senhor nosso Deus, mas também com aqueles que não estão aqui hoje.16 Vocês mesmos sabem como vivemos no Egito e como passamos por várias nações até chegar aqui.17 Vocês viram nelas as suas imagens e os seus ídolos detestáveis, feitos de madeira, de pedra, de prata e de ouro.18 Cuidem que não haja entre vocês nenhum homem ou mulher, clã ou tribo cujo coração se afaste do Senhor, do nosso Deus, para adorar os deuses daquelas nações, e para que não haja no meio de vocês nenhuma raiz que produza esse veneno amargo.19 Se alguém, cujo coração se afastou do Senhor para adorar outros deuses, ouvir as palavras deste juramento, invocar uma bênção sobre si mesmo e pensar: "Estarei em segurança, muito embora persista em seguir o meu próprio caminho", trará desgraça tanto à terra irrigada quanto à terra seca.20 O Senhor jamais se disporá a perdoá-lo; a sua ira e o seu zelo se acenderão contra tal pessoa. Todas as maldições escritas neste livro cairão sobre ela, e o Senhor apagará o seu nome de debaixo do céu.21 O Senhor a separará de todas as tribos de Israel para que sofra desgraça, de acordo com todas as maldições da aliança escrita neste Livro da Lei.22 Os seus filhos, os seus descendentes e os estrangeiros que vierem de terras distantes verão as desgraças que terão caído sobre a terra e as doenças com que o Senhor a terá afligido.23 A terra inteira será um deserto abrasador de sal e enxofre, no qual nada que for plantado brotará, onde nenhuma vegetação crescerá. Será como a destruição de Sodoma e Gomorra, de Admá e Zeboim, que o Senhor destruiu com ira e furor.24 Todas as nações perguntarão: "Por que o Senhor fez isto a esta terra? Por que tanta ira e tanto furor? "25 E a resposta será: "Foi porque este povo abandonou a aliança do Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, aliança feita com eles quando os tirou do Egito.26 Eles se foram e adoraram outros deuses e se prostraram diante deles, deuses que eles não conheciam antes, deuses que o Senhor não lhes tinha dado.27 Por isso a ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra esta terra, e ele trouxe sobre ela todas as maldições escritas neste livro.28 Cheio de ira, indignação e grande furor, o Senhor os desarraigou da sua terra e os lançou numa outra terra, como hoje se vê".29 As coisas encobertas pertencem ao Senhor, ao nosso Deus, mas as reveladas pertencem a nós e aos nossos filhos para sempre, para que sigamos todas as palavras desta lei.
