1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.2 And Pharaoh said, Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don't know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go.3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us: let us go, we pray you, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, or else he will fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword.4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do you{+}, Moses and Aaron, take the people away from their works? You{+} get to your{+} burdens.5 And Pharaoh said, Look, the people of the land are now many, and you{+} make them rest from their burdens.6 And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,7 You{+} will no more give the people straw to make bricks, as before: let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 And the number of the bricks, which they made before, you{+} will lay on them; you{+} will not diminish anything of it: for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.9 Let heavier work be laid on the men, that they may labor at it; and don't let them regard lying words.10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh, I will not give you{+} straw.11 Go yourselves, you{+} get straw where you{+} can find it: for nothing of your{+} work will be diminished.12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.13 And the taskmasters were urgent saying, Fulfill your{+} works, [your{+}] daily tasks, as when there was straw.14 And the officers of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Why have you{+} not fulfilled your{+} task both yesterday and today, in making bricks as before?15 Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why do you deal thus with your slaves?16 There is no straw given to your slaves, and they say to us, Make bricks: and, look, your slaves are beaten; and your people will be guilty.17 But he said, You{+} are idle, you{+} are idle: therefore you{+} say, Let us go and sacrifice to Yahweh.18 Go therefore now, and work; for there will no straw be given you{+}, yet you{+} will deliver the number of bricks.19 And the officers of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, You{+} will not diminish anything from your{+} bricks, [your{+}] daily tasks.20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:21 and they said to them, Yahweh look at you{+}, and judge: because you{+} have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his slaves, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.22 And Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, Lord, why have you dealt ill with this people? Why is it that you have sent me?23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has dealt ill with this people; neither have you delivered your people at all.

1 Depois disso Moisés e Arão foram falar com o faraó e disseram: "Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Deixe o meu povo ir para celebrar-me uma festa no deserto’ ".2 O faraó respondeu: "Quem é o Senhor, para que eu lhe obedeça e deixe Israel sair? Não conheço o Senhor, e não deixarei Israel sair".3 Eles insistiram: "O Deus dos hebreus veio ao nosso encontro. Agora, permite-nos caminhar três dias no deserto, para oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor, o nosso Deus; caso contrário, ele nos atingirá com pragas ou com a espada".4 Mas o rei do Egito respondeu: "Moisés e Arão, por que vocês estão fazendo o povo interromper suas tarefas? Voltem ao trabalho! "5 E acrescentou: "Essa gente já é tão numerosa, e vocês ainda os fazem parar de trabalhar! "6 No mesmo dia o faraó deu a seguinte ordem aos feitores e capatazes responsáveis pelo povo:7 "Não forneçam mais palha ao povo para fazer tijolos, como faziam antes. Eles que tratem de ajuntar palha!8 Mas exijam que continuem a fazer a mesma quantidade de tijolos; não reduzam a cota. São preguiçosos, e por isso estão clamando: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao nosso Deus’.9 Aumentem a carga de trabalho dessa gente para que cumpram suas tarefas e não dêem atenção a mentiras".10 Os feitores e os capatazes foram dizer ao povo: "Assim diz o faraó: ‘Já não lhes darei palha.11 Saiam e recolham-na onde puderem achá-la, pois o trabalho de vocês em nada será reduzido’ ".12 O povo então espalhou-se por todo o Egito, a fim de ajuntar restolho em lugar da palha.13 Enquanto isso, os feitores os pressionavam, dizendo: "Completem a mesma tarefa diária que lhes foi exigida quando tinham palha".14 Os capatazes israelitas indicados pelos feitores do faraó eram espancados e interrogados: "Por que não completaram ontem e hoje a mesma cota de tijolos dos dias anteriores? "15 Então os capatazes israelitas foram apelar para o faraó: "Por que tratas os teus servos dessa maneira?16 Não se fornece a nós, teus servos, a palha, e contudo nos dizem: ‘Façam tijolos! ’ Os teus servos têm sido espancados, mas a culpa é do teu próprio povo".17 Respondeu o faraó: "Preguiçosos, é o que vocês são! Preguiçosos! Por isso andam dizendo: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor’.18 Agora, voltem ao trabalho. Vocês não receberão palha alguma! Continuem a produzir a cota integral de tijolos! "19 Os capatazes israelitas se viram em dificuldade quando lhes disseram que não poderiam reduzir a quantidade de tijolos exigida a cada dia.20 Ao saírem da presença do faraó, encontraram-se com Moisés e Arão, que estavam à espera deles,21 e lhes disseram: "O Senhor os examine e os julgue! Vocês atraíram o ódio do faraó e dos seus conselheiros sobre nós, e lhes puseram nas mãos uma espada para que nos matem".22 Moisés voltou-se para o Senhor e perguntou: "Senhor, por que maltrataste a este povo? Afinal, por que me enviaste?23 Desde que me dirigi ao faraó para falar em teu nome, ele tem maltratado a este povo, e tu de modo algum libertaste o teu povo! "
