1 But the sons of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against the sons of Israel.2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.3 And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, Don't let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai; don't make all the people to toil there; for they are but few.4 So there went up there of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.5 And the men of Ai struck of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them [from] before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of Yahweh until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Sovereign Yahweh, why have you at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? Would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!8 Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth: and what will you do for your great name?10 And Yahweh said to Joshua, Get yourself up; why are you thus fallen on your face?11 Israel has sinned; yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yes, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.12 Therefore the sons of Israel can't stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become accursed: I will not be with you{+} anymore, except you{+} destroy the devoted thing from among you{+}.13 Get up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for this is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, There is a devoted thing in the midst of you, O Israel; you can not stand before your enemies, until you{+} take away the devoted thing from among you{+}.14 In the morning therefore you{+} will be brought near by your{+} tribes: and it will be, that the tribe which Yahweh takes will come near by families; and the family which Yahweh will take will come near by households; and the household which Yahweh will take will come near man by man.15 And it will be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing will be burnt with fire, he and all that he has; because he has transgressed the covenant of Yahweh, and because he has wrought folly in Israel.16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:17 and he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:18 and he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.19 And Joshua said to Achan, My son, give, I pray you, glory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and make confession to him; and tell me now what you have done; don't hide it from me.20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and thus and thus I have done:21 when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonian mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, look, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and, look, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua, and to all the sons of Israel; and they laid them down before Yahweh.24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.25 And Joshua said, Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and heaped stones upon them.26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones, to this day; and Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, to this day.

1 Mas os israelitas foram infiéis com relação às coisas consagradas. Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zinri, filho de Zerá, da tribo de Judá, apossou-se de algumas delas. E a ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra Israel.2 Sucedeu que Josué enviou homens de Jericó a Ai, que fica perto de Bete-Áven, a leste de Betel, e ordenou-lhes: "Subam e espionem a região". Os homens subiram e espionaram Ai.3 Quando voltaram a Josué, disseram: "Não é preciso que todos avancem contra Ai. Envie uns dois ou três mil homens para atacá-la. Não canse todo o exército, pois eles são poucos".4 Por isso cerca de três mil homens atacaram a cidade; mas os homens de Ai os puseram em fuga,5 chegando a matar trinta e seis deles. Eles perseguiram os israelitas desde a porta da cidade até Sebarim, e os feriram na descida. Diante disso o povo desanimou-se completamente.6 Então Josué, com as autoridades de Israel, rasgou as vestes, prostrou-se, rosto em terra, diante da arca do Senhor, cobrindo de terra a cabeça, e ali permaneceu até à tarde.7 Disse então Josué: "Ah, Soberano Senhor, por que fizeste este povo atravessar o Jordão? Foi para nos entregar nas mãos dos amorreus e nos destruir? Antes nos contentássemos em continuar no outro lado do Jordão!8 Que poderei dizer, Senhor, agora que Israel foi derrotado por seus inimigos?9 Os cananeus e os demais habitantes desta terra saberão disso, nos cercarão e eliminarão o nosso nome da terra. Que farás, então, pelo teu grande nome? "10 O Senhor disse a Josué: "Levante-se! Por que você está aí prostrado?11 Israel pecou. Violaram a aliança que eu lhes ordenei. Eles se apossaram de coisas consagradas, roubaram-nas, esconderam-nas, e as colocaram junto de seus bens.12 Por isso os israelitas não conseguem resistir aos inimigos; fogem deles porque se tornaram merecedores da sua destruição. Não estarei mais com vocês, se não destruírem do meio de vocês o que foi consagrado à destruição.13 "Vá, santifique o povo! Diga-lhes: Santifiquem-se para amanhã, pois assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Há coisas consagradas à destruição no meio de vocês, ó Israel. Vocês não conseguirão resistir aos seus inimigos enquanto não as retirarem.14 "Apresentem-se de manhã, uma tribo de cada vez. A tribo que o Senhor escolher virá à frente, um clã de cada vez; o clã que o Senhor escolher virá à frente, uma família de cada vez; e a família que o Senhor escolher virá à frente, um homem de cada vez.15 Aquele que for pego com as coisas consagradas será queimado no fogo com tudo o que lhe pertence. Violou a aliança do Senhor e cometeu loucura em Israel! "16 Na manhã seguinte Josué mandou os israelitas virem à frente segundo as suas tribos, e a de Judá foi a escolhida.17 Os clãs de Judá vieram à frente, e ele escolheu os zeraítas. Fez o clã dos zeraítas vir à frente, família por família, e o escolhido foi Zinri.18 Josué fez a família de Zinri vir à frente, homem por homem, e Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zinri, filho de Zerá, da tribo de Judá, foi o escolhido.19 Então Josué disse a Acã: "Meu filho, para a glória do Senhor, o Deus de Israel, diga a verdade. Conte-me o que você fez; não me esconda nada".20 Acã respondeu: "É verdade que pequei contra o Senhor, contra o Deus de Israel. O que fiz foi o seguinte:21 quando vi entre os despojos uma bela capa feita na Babilônia, dois quilos e quatrocentos gramas de prata e uma barra de ouro de seiscentos gramas, eu os cobicei e me apossei deles. Estão escondidos no chão da minha tenda, com a prata por baixo".22 Josué enviou alguns homens que correram à tenda de Acã; lá estavam escondidas as coisas, com a prata por baixo.23 Retiraram-nas da tenda e as levaram a Josué e a todos os israelitas, e as puseram perante o Senhor.24 Então Josué, junto com todo o Israel, levou Acã, bisneto de Zerá, e a prata, a capa, a barra de ouro, seus filhos e filhas, seus bois, seus jumentos, suas ovelhas, sua tenda e tudo o que lhe pertencia, ao vale de Acor.25 Disse Josué: "Por que você nos causou esta desgraça? Hoje o Senhor lhe causará desgraça". E todo o Israel o apedrejou, e depois apedrejou também os seus, e os queimou no fogo.26 Sobre Acã ergueram um grande monte de pedras, que existe até hoje. Então o Senhor se afastou do fogo da sua ira. Por isso foi dado àquele lugar o nome de vale de Acor, nome que permanece até hoje.
