1 A população da terra elegeu então Joacaz, filho de Josias, e o estabeleceu rei no lugar de seu pai, em Jerusalém.2 Joacaz tinha vinte e três anos quando começou a reinar; reinou três meses em Jerusalém.3 O rei do Egito destronou-o em Jerusalém e impôs à terra uma contribuição de cem talentos de prata e um talento de ouro.4 Em seguida, pôs no trono de Jerusalém o irmão de Joacaz, Eliacim, de quem mudou o nome para Joaquim. Quanto ao seu irmão Joacaz, Necao o mandou para o Egito.5 Joaquim tinha a idade de vinte e cinco anos quando foi elevado ao trono; reinou onze anos em Jerusalém. Fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor seu Deus.6 Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, atacou-o e ligou-o com uma dupla cadeia de bronze para conduzi-lo a Babilônia,7 levando ao mesmo tempo os objetos do templo para o seu palácio de Babilônia.8 Os outros atos de Joaquim, suas abominações, tudo o de que ele se tornou culpado, está relatado nos livros dos reis de Judá e de Israel. Seu filho Joaquin sucedeu-o no trono.9 Joaquin tinha a idade de dezoito anos quando foi elevado ao trono; reinou três meses em Jerusalém. Fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor.10 No ano novo, o rei Nabucodonosor mandou que fosse levado para Babilônia com os objetos preciosos do templo do Senhor. Substituiu-o, no trono de Judá e de Jerusalém, Sedecias, irmão de seu pai.11 Sedecias tinha a idade de vinte e um anos quando foi elevado ao trono; reinou onze anos em Jerusalém.12 Fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor, seu Deus, e não se humilhou diante do profeta Jeremias que lhe tinha vindo falar da parte do Senhor.13 Revoltou-se contra o rei Nabucodonosor, que, contudo, lhe tinha feito prestar um juramento em nome de Deus. Endureceu a cerviz e tornou inflexível seu coração para não se converter ao Senhor, Deus de Israel.14 Todos os chefes dos sacerdotes e o povo continuaram a multiplicar seus delitos, imitando as práticas abomináveis das nações pagãs e profanando o templo que o Senhor tinha consagrado para si em Jerusalém.15 Em vão o Senhor, Deus de seus pais, lhes tinha enviado, por meio de seus mensageiros, avisos sobre avisos, pois tinha compaixão de seu povo e de sua própria habitação;16 eles zombavam de seus enviados, desprezavam seus conselhos e riam de seus profetas, até que a ira de Deus se desencadeou sobre o seu povo, e não houve mais remédio.17 Então Deus suscitou contra eles o rei dos caldeus, que, no próprio edifício do santuário, mandou matar seus jovens, e não poupou o adolescente, nem a donzela, nem o ancião, nem a mulher de cabelos brancos. O Senhor lhe entregou tudo.18 Nabucodonosor mandou tirar todo o mobiliário do templo, tanto os objetos grandes como os pequenos, os tesouros do templo, os do palácio real e os dos chefes, para transportá-los a Babilônia.19 Incendiaram o templo, destruíram os muros de Jerusalém, entregaram às chamas seus palácios e todos os tesouros foram lançados à destruição.20 Nabucodonosor deportou para Babilônia todos os que tinham escapado à espada, e eles se tornaram seus escravos, dele e de seus filhos, até o advento do domínio persa.21 Assim se cumpria a profecia que o Senhor tinha dado pela boca de Jeremias - Até que a terra desfrutasse os seus sábados -, pois a terra ficou inculta durante todo esse período de desolação, até que se completaram setenta anos.22 No primeiro ano de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, a fim de que se cumprisse a profecia do Senhor, posta na boca de Jeremias, o Senhor excitou o espírito de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, e este mandou fazer em todo o seu reino, à viva voz e também por escrito, a proclamação seguinte:23 Assim fala Ciro, rei da Pérsia: o Senhor, Deus do céu, deu-me todos os reinos da terra, e me encarregou de lhe construir um templo em Jerusalém, que está na terra de Judá. Todo aquele dentre vós que for de seu povo, esteja seu Deus com ele, e que ele para lá se dirija!

1 Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father's stead in Jerusalem.2 Jehoahaz [was] twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.3 And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem and condemned the land in one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.4 And the king of Egypt made Eliakim, his brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz, his brother, and carried him to Egypt.5 Jehoiakim [was] twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem, and he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD his God.6 And Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up against him and bound him with [fetters of] brass; he carried him to Babylon.7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon and put them in his temple at Babylon.8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and his abominations which he did and that which was found in him, behold, they [are] written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah; and Jehoiachin, his son, reigned in his stead.9 Jehoiachin [was] eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem; and he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD.10 And when the year was expired, King Nebuchadnezzar sent and caused him to be brought to Babylon with the precious vessels of the house of the LORD and made Zedekiah, his brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.11 Zedekiah [was] twenty-one years old when he began to reign and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.12 And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD his God [and] did not humble himself before Jeremiah, the prophet, [who spoke unto him] from the mouth of the LORD.13 He rebelled, likewise, against King Nebuchadnezzar, unto whom he had sworn by God; but he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD God of Israel.14 Moreover, all the princes of the priests and the people increased the rebellion, rebelling according to all the abominations of the Gentiles and polluting the house of the LORD which he had sanctified in Jerusalem.15 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by the hand of his messengers, rising up early, and sending because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.16 But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there [was] no remedy.17 Therefore, he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age; he gave [them] all into his hands.18 Likewise, all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king and of his princes; all [these] he brought to Babylon.19 And they burnt the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem and burnt all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its desirable vessels.20 And those that escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia,21 to fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah until the land had fulfilled her sabbaths; for all the time of her desolation she rested until the seventy years were fulfilled.22 But in the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, that the word of the LORD [spoken] by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and [put it] also in writing, saying,23 Thus saith Cyrus, king of Persia, The LORD God of the heavens has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who [is there] among you of all his people? [Let] the LORD his God [be] with him, and let him go up.:
