1 De volta a Jerusalém, Roboão mobilizou as tribos de Judá e de Benjamim, em número de cento e oitenta mil guerreiros escolhidos, para atacar a casa de Israel e reintegrá-la ao reino de Roboão.2 Mas a palavra do Senhor foi dirigida ao homem de Deus, Semaías, nestes termos:3 Dirige-te a Roboão, filho de Salomão, rei de Judá, e a todos os de Israel que habitam em Judá e Benjamim.4 Dize-lhes: Eis o que diz o Senhor: De modo algum ireis fazer guerra a vossos irmãos. Voltai cada qual para sua casa, pois é por mim que esses acontecimentos se realizaram. Dóceis à palavra do Senhor, renunciaram a atacar Jeroboão, e voltaram.5 Roboão ficou, portanto, em Jerusalém. Construiu cidades fortes no território de Judá.6 Construiu Belém, Etão, Técua,7 Betsur, Odolão,8 Get, Maresa, Zif,9 Adurão, Laquis, Azeca,10 Saraa, Aialon e Hebron, todas cidades fortificadas, situadas em Judá e Benjamim.11 Fortificou esses lugares, nomeou para eles governadores e neles estabeleceu depósitos de víveres, óleo e vinho.12 Fez em cada cidade um arsenal de escudos e de lanças, fazendo delas verdadeiras praças fortes. Judá e Benjamim ficavam-lhe, portanto, fiéis.13 Os sacerdotes e levitas que habitavam no território de Israel vieram de todas as partes aderir ao seu partido.14 Os levitas abandonaram suas terras e suas propriedades para irem habitar em Judá ou em Jerusalém, porque Jeroboão e seus filhos os tinham destituído de sua função de sacerdotes do Senhor.15 Jeroboão, com efeito, nomeara sacerdotes para os lugares altos, para o culto dos bodes e dos touros que tinha feito.16 Após os levitas, todos aqueles das tribos de Israel que procuravam de coração o Senhor, Deus de Israel, foram a Jerusalém para oferecer seus sacrifícios ao Senhor, o Deus de seus pais.17 Vieram assim reforçar o reino de Judá, e reafirmar o poder de Roboão, filho de Salomão. Isso durou três anos, pois durante um triênio seguiram o roteiro traçado por Davi e Salomão.18 Roboão tomou por esposas Maalat, filha de Jerimot, filho de Davi, {e} Abiai, filha de Eliab, filho de Isaí.19 Esta lhe deu à luz os filhos: Jeus, Somoria e Zom.20 Depois dela, tomou por esposa Maaca, filha de Absalão, que lhe deu Abia, Etaí, Ziza e Salomit.21 Dentre todas as suas mulheres e concubinas, Roboão teve mais predileção por Maaca, filha de Absalão. Teve dezoito mulheres e sessenta concubinas; e gerou vinte e oito filhos e sessenta filhas.22 Deu o primeiro lugar a Abia, filho de Maaca, na qualidade de chefe de seus irmãos, pois ele o destinava ao reino.23 Teve muita habilidade para distribuir todos os seus filhos pelas praças fortes, pelas diversas regiões de Judá e de Benjamim; assegurou-lhes uma pensão copiosa, e deu-lhes muitas mulheres.

1 And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin one hundred and eighty thousand chosen [men], who were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, the man of God, saying,3 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,4 Thus hath the LORD said, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren; return each man to his house; for this thing is done of me. And they heard the word of the LORD and returned and did not go against Jeroboam.5 And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah.6 He built Bethlehem and Etam and Tekoa7 and Bethzur and Shoco and Adullam8 and Gath and Mareshah and Ziph9 and Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah10 and Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which [are] in Judah and in Benjamin, fenced cities.11 And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them and provisions and wine and oil;12 and in all the cities [he put] shields and spears. He fortified them greatly, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.13 And the priests and the Levites that [were] in all Israel gathered unto him out of all their borders.14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possessions and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office unto the LORD.15 And he ordained himself priests for the high places and for the demons and for the calves which he had made.16 And from after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.17 So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, strong for three years because they walked three years in the way of David and of Solomon.18 And Rehoboam took Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth, the son of David, to wife, [and] Abihail, the daughter of Eliab, the son of Jesse;19 who bore him sons: Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham.20 And after her he took Maachah, the daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith.21 But Rehoboam loved Maachah, the daughter of Absalom, above all his wives and his concubines (for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines and begat twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.)22 And Rehoboam made Abijah, the son of Maachah, as head and prince among his brethren, for [he thought] to make him king.23 And he caused him to be instructed and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city; and he gave them provisions in abundance. And he desired many wives.:
