1 Naquele tempo - oráculo do Senhor - serão retirados de seus sepulcros os ossos dos reis de Judá, dos seus chefes e sacerdotes, dos seus profetas e habitantes de Jerusalém.2 E serão expostos ao sol, à lua e à multidão das estrelas que tanto amaram e serviram, e que seguiram, consultaram e adoraram. Esses ossos não serão mais recolhidos, nem enterrados, permanecendo como adubo na superfície do solo.3 Preferível à vida será a morte para os sobreviventes dessa raça perversa, em todos os lugares pelos quais eu os houver dispersado - oráculo do Senhor dos exércitos.4 Dir-lhe-ás, então: Eis o que diz o Senhor: não se deverá levantar aquele que tomba? Não voltará aquele que se desviou?5 Por que persiste esse povo de Jerusalém em perpétua loucura? Obstinam-se na má fé, recusando converter-se.6 Atentamente os escutei: não falam, porém, com sinceridade. Nem um deles se arrepende da maldade e não clama: Que fiz eu? Retomam todos a caminhada, à semelhança do cavalo que se arremessa à batalha.7 Até a cegonha pelo ar reconhece a estação, e as rolas e as andorinhas são fiéis à migração. O meu povo, porém, não conhece a lei do Senhor.8 Como podeis dizer: Somos sábios, e temos conosco a lei do Senhor? Na verdade foi a mentira que fez desta lei o estilete enganador dos escribas.9 Os sábios consternados e confundidos ficarão cobertos de vergonha, por haverem repelido a palavra do Senhor; qual seria então a sabedoria deles?10 Eis por que a outros darei suas mulheres, e seus campos a novos donos, já que, do menor ao maior deles, todos se entregam aos lucros desonestos. Desde o profeta até o sacerdote, praticam todos a mentira.11 Tratam sem cuidado da ferida da filha do meu povo, e dizem: Vai tudo bem! Vai tudo bem! quando vai tudo mal.12 Pelo seu proceder abominável serão confundidos, mas nem ao menos conhecem a vergonha, e nem o que seja enrubescer. Assim como os que caem, tombarão também e perecerão no dia do castigo - oráculo do Senhor.13 Vou reuni-los todos e arrebatá-los - oráculo do Senhor. Mas não havia uma só uva na vinha, nem figo na figueira. A folhagem havia murchado. E assim lhes dei quem os haveria de conquistar.14 Para que ainda nos determos? Reuni-vos, e vamos para as praças fortes: lá havemos de perecer. Porquanto o Senhor, nosso Deus, decidiu que pereçamos, fazendo-nos beber água envenenada, já que pecamos contra ele.15 Aguardávamos a felicidade e nenhum bem encontramos, nenhum tempo de exaltação, e só vemos o terror.16 Ouve-se, desde Dã, o relinchar dos cavalos, e toda a terra estremece com o estrépito de seus corcéis, que ao chegarem destroem a terra e o quanto nela existe: a cidade e os habitantes.17 Vou lançar serpentes contra vós, e víboras insensíveis aos encantamentos, que vos morderão - oráculo do Senhor.18 Onde encontrar consolo para a minha dor? Dentro de mim sofre o coração. Chega-me de uma terra longínqua19 a voz amargurada da filha do meu povo: Não está mais o Senhor em Sião? E nela não mora mais o seu rei? Por que me irritaram com seus ídolos, com as vãs divindades de outros países?20 Passou a ceifa; terminou a colheita, e não nos chegou a libertação.21 Faz-me sofrer a chaga da filha de meu povo, cobre-me o luto; apossa-se de mim a desolação.22 Não haverá mais bálsamo de Galaad? Nem se poderá encontrar um médico? Por que, então, a ferida da filha de um povo não se há de cicatrizar?

1 At that time, said the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah and the bones of his princes and the bones of the priests and the bones of the prophets and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves;2 and they shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved and whom they have served and after whom they have walked and whom they have sought and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of those that remain of this evil generation, in all the places where I have driven those that remain, said the LORD of the hosts.4 Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath the LORD said: The one who falls, does he never arise? he who turns away, does he never return?5 Why [then] is this people of Jerusalem rebellious with a perpetual rebellion? They hold fast deceit; they refuse to return.6 I hearkened and heard, [but] they did not speak aright: there was no man that repented of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? each one returned to his course as the horse rushes into the battle.7 Even the stork in the heaven knows her appointed time; and the turtle [dove] and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people did not know the judgment of the LORD.8 How do ye say, We [are] wise, and the law of the LORD [is] with us? Behold, certainly in vain did he make the pen; the scribes [were] in vain.9 The wise [men] are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom [is] in them?10 Therefore I will give their wives unto others [and] their fields unto those that shall inherit [them]: for each one from the least even unto the greatest is given to greed; from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.11 For they have treated the destruction of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace, when [there is] no peace.12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among those that should fall: when I visit them, they shall fall, saith the LORD.13 I will surely cut them off completely, said the LORD: [there are] no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fall; and [the things that] I have given them shall pass away from them.14 Upon what shall we secure ourselves? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God has put us to silence and given us water of gall to drink because we have sinned against the LORD.15 We looked for peace, but no good [came]; [and] for a time of health, and behold trouble!16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan; the whole earth trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come and have devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those that dwell therein.17 For, behold, I send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which [will] not [be] charmed, and they shall bite you, said the LORD.18 Because of my strong sorrow, my heart [is] faint in me.19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people that comes from a far country: [Is] not the LORD in Zion? [Is] not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images [and] with vanities of a strange [god]?20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.21 For the destruction of the daughter of my people I am devastated; I am in darkness; astonishment has taken hold on me.22 [Is there] no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? Why then was there no medicine for the daughter of my people?:
