1 José foi, pois, informar o faraó: "Meu pai, disse ele, e meus irmãos chegaram da terra de Canaã com suas ovelhas, seus bois e tudo o que lhes pertence. Eles estão na terra de Gessém."2 José levara consigo cinco de seus irmãos, que apresentou ao faraó.3 Este disse-lhes: "Qual é vossa profissão?" Responderam: "Teus servos são pastores, como sempre o foram nossos pais.4 Viemos, ajuntaram eles, para morar no país porque não há mais pastagem para os rebanhos de teus servos, sendo muito grande a fome na terra de Canaã. Permite, pois, aos teus servos habitarem na terra de Gessém."5 O faraó disse a José: "Teu pai e teus irmãos vieram para junto de ti; a terra do Egito está à tua disposição: instala-os na melhor parte do país.6 Que eles habitem na terra de Gessém; e, se conheces entre eles alguns que sejam capazes, pô-los-ás à frente dos rebanhos que me pertencem."7 José fez então vir Jacó, seu pai, e o apresentou ao faraó.8 Jacó abençoou o faraó. Este disse-lhe: "Que idade tens?"9 Jacó respondeu-lhe: "O número dos anos de minha peregrinação é de cento e trinta anos. Curtos e maus foram os anos de minha vida, e não atingiriam o número dos que viveram meus pais durante sua peregrinação."10 E, depois de ter abençoado o faraó, Jacó despediu-se dele.11 José instalou seu pai e seus irmãos em uma propriedade do país do Egito, na melhor parte da região, a terra de Ramsés, como o tinha ordenado o faraó.12 E José forneceu víveres a seu pai, a seus irmãos e a toda sua família, proporcionalmente ao número dos filhos.13 E faltou pão em toda a terra, porque a fome era tão violenta que a terra do Egito e a terra de Canaã estavam esgotadas.14 José tinha ajuntado todo o dinheiro que se encontrava no Egito e em Canaã, como preço do trigo que compravam, e o tinha depositado no tesouro do faraó.15 Quando havia acabado todo o dinheiro do Egito e de Canaã, todos os egípcios vieram dizer a José: "Dá-nos pão. Por que morreremos na tua presença por falta de dinheiro?"16 José respondeu: "Trazei vossos animais, se não tendes dinheiro, e dar-vos-ei pão em troca."17 Trouxeram, pois, seus animais a José, o qual lhes deu pão em troca dos cavalos, dos rebanhos de ovelhas, dos bois e dos jumentos. Dessa forma, naquele ano, fornecera-lhes pão em troca de todos os seus rebanhos.18 E aquele ano passou. No ano seguinte, voltaram a ele e disseram-lhe: "Não podemos ocultar do meu senhor que o dinheiro, tendo-se esgotado, e nossos animais, tendo já passado para as mãos de meu senhor, não nos restam agora senão nossos corpos e nossas terras para oferecer ao meu senhor.19 Por que perecermos diante de teus olhos, nós e nossas terras? Compra-nos a nós e a nossas terras em troca de pão, e nós e nossas terras seremos escravos do faraó. Dá-nos sementes, para que vivamos e não morramos, e não seja desolado o nosso solo".20 José adquiriu, assim, para o faraó, todas as terras do Egito, porque cada egípcio vendia o seu campo, obrigado pela fome; e o país tornou-se propriedade do faraó.21 De um extremo a outro do território, ele reduziu a população à servidão.22 As terras dos sacerdotes foram as únicas que não comprou, porque estes recebiam do faraó uma ração determinada para o seu sustento. Por isso não venderam suas propriedades.23 José disse ao povo: "Eu vos comprei hoje, vós e vossas terras, para o faraó. Aqui tendes sementes: semeai vossos campos.24 No tempo da colheita, dareis a quinta parte ao faraó: as outras quatro partes vos servirão para semente do campo e para vosso alimento com vossos filhos e os que moram convosco."25 Eles responderam: "Tu nos salvaste a vida. Tenhamos graça aos olhos de meu senhor e seremos de bom grado escravos do faraó."26 José instituiu assim uma lei que ainda hoje está em vigor, em virtude da qual uma quinta parte da colheita pertence ao faraó. Somente as terras dos sacerdotes não se tornaram sua propriedade.27 Israel estabeleceu-se, pois, no Egito, na terra de Gessém. Adquiriram aí propriedades, foram fecundos e multiplicaram-se grandemente.28 Jacó viveu ainda dezessete anos no Egito. A duração de sua vida foi de cento e quarenta e sete anos.29 E, aproximando-se do seu termo os dias de Israel, chamou o seu filho José e disse-lhe: "Se achei graça diante de teus olhos, mete, rogo-te, tua mão debaixo de minha coxa e promete-me, com toda a bondade e fidelidade, que não me enterrarás no Egito.30 Quando eu me tiver deitado com meus pais, levar-me-ás para fora do Egito e me enterrarás junto deles em seu túmulo." José respondeu: "Farei como dizes." "Jura-mo", replicou Jacó.31 José jurou-lhe e Israel prostrou-se sobre a cabeceira de sua cama.
1 Then came Joseph and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brothers, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.2 And he took some of his brothers, five men, and presented them before Pharaoh.3 And Pharaoh said unto his brothers, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, as also our fathers.4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, To sojourn in the land are we come; because there is no pasture for the flocks of thy servants, for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan; and now let thy servants dwell, we pray thee, in the land of Goshen.5 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, thus, Thy father and thy brothers are come unto thee:6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land let thy father and brothers dwell; let them dwell in the land of Goshen; and if thou knowest that there are among them men of activity, then appoint them rulers over my cattle.7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and placed him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.8 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou?9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years: few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.11 And Joseph assigned places of residence for his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.12 And Joseph supplied his father, and his brothers, and all his fathers household, with bread, in proportion to their families.13 And there was no bread in all the land: for the famine was very sore; and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaohs house.15 And when the money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread, for why should we die in thy presence, since the money is all gone?16 And Joseph said, Give up your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if the money be all gone.17 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks of sheep, and for the herds of cattle, and for the asses; and he supplied them with bread for all their cattle for that year.18 And when that year was ended, they came unto him in the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money with our herds of cattle hath entirely passed into the possession of my lord; there is naught left in sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our land.19 Wherefore shall we die before thy eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread; and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh; and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land be not rendered desolate.20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaohs.21 And as for the people, he removed them to the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end thereof.22 Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them by Pharaoh, and they ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them: therefore they did not sell their land.23 Then said Joseph unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and sow ye the land.24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest times, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh; and four parts shall be your own, for the seed of the field, and for your food, and for those belonging to your households, and for food for your little ones.25 And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us but find grace in the eyes of my lord, and we will be Pharaohs servants.26 And Joseph made it a statute unto this day over the land of Egypt, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests alone became not Pharaohs.27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty and seven years.29 And when the time of Israel drew near that he was to die, he sent to call his son Joseph, and said unto him, if now I have found grace in thy eyes, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh; and deal with me in kindness and truth; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt.30 But when I shall lie with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.31 And he said, Swear unto me; and he swore unto him; and Israel bowed himself upon the head of the bed.
